In this research, the cation-exchange membrane (SS membrane) containing sulfonic acid group was prepared by radiation induced grafted polymerization onto a porous hollow fiber membrane to effectively remove ammonia which was produced by urea decomposition for peritoneum dialysis system. And the metal ionic cross-linking cation-exchange membrane (SS-M membrane) was prepared by the adsorption of metallic ions (Cu, Ni, Zn) to the SS membranes. The pure water flux and adsorption capacities of ammonia to SS and SS-M membranes were examined. The pure water flux of SS membrane decreased rapidly with the density of $SO_3H$ group increasing. As the metallic ions were adsorbed to the SS membrane, the pure water flux was increased. The adsorption capacities of ammonia at the SS membrane increased with increasing of density of $SO_3H$ group. The ion-exchange capacity of ammonia of the SS membrane was approximately proportional 1 : 1 to the density of $SO_3H$ group. The SS membrane had higher adsorption capacities than the SS-M membrane. The highest adsorption capacities of SS and SS-M membrane appeared the highest pH 9.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the problems of low signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) of single-shot turbo spin echo(SS-TSE) by quantifying numerically decreased signal to noise ratio. Thirty five patients without brain disease underwent diffusion MRI in 3T scanner from July to October in 2015. Single shot echo planar imaging(SS-EPI) which is conventionally used in MRI was taken to compared SS-TSE in SNR of medulla oblongata. As a result, SNR of SS-TSE diffusion(b0=$314.41{\pm}42.96$, b1000=$117.33{\pm}14.04$) is than SS-EPI diffusion(b0=$514.84{\pm}48.97$, b=$208.65{\pm}25.70$) lower in b=0 image(38.9%) and b=1,000 image(43.8%). Thus, diffusion MR using SS-EPI of MS-EPI should be taken for diagnosis of disease in brain stem due to decreased SNR of diffusion using SS-TSE.
Artemisia princeps Pampanini, which is called Ssajuarissuk in Korean (SS-1), was fermented with lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and their passive cutaneous anaphylaxis reaction-inhibitory activity was investigated. Of these fermented agents, SS-1 extract fermented with Bifidobacterium infantis K-525 (F-SS-1) most effectively inhibited the release of ${\beta}$-hexosamindase from RBL-2H3 cells induced IgE. In IgE-induced RBL-2H3 cells, F-SS-1 inhibited proinflammatory cytokines IL-6 and $TNF-{\alpha}$ mRNA expression. Oral administration of SS-1 and F-SS-1 to mice inhibited passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) reaction induced by IgE and scratching behaviors induced by compound 48/80. The inhibitory activity of F-SS-1 against scratching behaviors was more effective than that of SS-1. These findings suggest that the fermentation of SS-1 with LAB can increase its antiallergic activity.
In this study, the effect of ${\beta}$-sitosterol (SS) in the liposome bilayer on the stability of incorporated retinol was evaluated. Retinol was incorporated into liposomes consisting of various ratios of soybean phoaphatidylcholine (PC) to SS, while liposomes were prepared as multilamellar vesicles by the dehydration/rehydration method. Retinol was readily incorporated into liposomes with various SS contents, with incorporation efficiencies higher than 98% for all conditions. The incorporation efficiency of retinol increased slightly as the SS content in liposomes increased. Its average particle size also increased as the SS content increased. Mean particle size at PC to SS ratios of 100:0, 90:10, 80:20, 70:30, 60:40, and 50:50 were 12.16, 17.57, 35.00, 40.62, 83.45, and $88.94\;{\mu}m$, respectively. Liposomal retinol degradation in aqueous solution was measured with respect to SS content at various periods of time at four different temperatures of 4, 25, 37, and $50^{\circ}C$, and the stability of the incorporated retinol enhanced as the SS content increased. At $4^{\circ}C$, for example, retinol in the liposomes of 50:50 (PC:SS) remained at 84.42% after storage for 10 days, while in 100:0 (PC/SS) it remained at 42.62%. These results indicate that SS content in liposomes played an important role in the incorporation efficiency of retinol and its stability.
Objectives : This study is to investigate stimulation effects of acupoints at differential meridian along arm and leg on the physiological phenomenon of heartbeats. Methods : 8 subjects were participated in this study. The experiments were performed in Resting session(Rs), Insertion session(Is), Stimulation session1(Ss1), Stimulation session2(Ss2), Stimulation session3(Ss3) sequence. Time of each session and the interval between each session was 30 seconds all. Acupuncture was performed manually on PC3 or LR8 at random with a two-day interval. stand deviation of N-N interval(SDNN) was measured for each session. Results : At PC3, SDNN increased in Ss1, Ss2, and Ss3 compared to Rs but at LR8, there was little change between Ss1, Ss2, Ss3 and Rs. Post-hoc analysis revealed that mean value of SDNN significantly increased in Ss1 compared with Baseline at PC3, while there was little change at LR8. When LR8 and PC3 were compared at each time point, there was a significant difference only in Ss1. Conclusions : Our results indicate that there is a correlation between specific physiological functions and acupoints.
Sjögren syndrome (SS) is a systemic inflammatory autoimmune disease that involves exocrine glands. Shikonin is extracted from comfrey, which is conventionally used as an anti-tumor, antibacterial, and antiviral drug in China. However, the application of Shikonin in SS remains unreported. This study aimed to verify the potential functions of Shikonin in SS progression. Firstly, non-obese diabetic mice were used as the SS mouse model, with C57BL/6 mice serving as the healthy control. It was demonstrated that the salivary gland damage and inflammation were aggravated in the SS mouse model. Shikonin improved salivary gland function decline and injury in the SS mouse model. Moreover, Shikonin reduced inflammatory cytokines and immune infiltration in the SS mouse model. Further experiments discovered that Shikonin attenuated the MAPK signaling pathway in the SS mouse model. Lastly, inhibition of the MAPK signaling pathway combined with Shikonin treatment further alleviated the symptoms of SS. In conclusion, Shikonin ameliorated salivary gland damage and inflammation in a mouse model of SS by modulating the MAPK signaling pathway. Our findings indicate that Shikonin may be a useful drug for SS treatment.
The effects of Korean solar salt on an azoxymethane (AOM)/dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colon cancer C57BL/6 mouse model were studied. Korean solar salt samples (SS-S, solar salt from S salt field; SS-Yb, solar salt from Yb salt field), nine-time-baked bamboo salt (BS-9x, made from SS-Yb), purified salt (PS), and SS-G (solar salt from $Gu\acute{e}rande$, France) were orally administered at a concentration of 1% during AOM/DSS colon cancer induction, and compared for their protective effects during colon carcinogenesis in C57BL/6 mice. SS-S and SS-Yb suppressed colon length shortening and tumor counts in mouse colons. Histological evaluation by hematoxylin and eosin staining also revealed suppression of tumorigenesis by SS-S. Conversely, PS and SS-G did not show a similar suppressive efficacy as Korean solar salt. SS-S and SS-Yb promoted colon mRNA expression of an apoptosis-related factor and cell-cycle-related gene and suppressed pro-inflammatory factor. SS-Yb baked into BS-9x further promoted these anti-carcinogenic efficacies. Taken together, the results indicate that Korean solar salt, especially SS-S and SS-Yb, exhibited anti-cancer activity by modulating apoptosis- and inflammation-related gene expression during colon carcinogenesis in mice, and bamboo salt baked from SS-Yb showed enhanced anti-cancer functionality.

Three-dimensional cohesive sediment transport model, COSETM-3, is develpoed using a finite difference method. The model results are compared with the physical experimental results for the relative concentration with time at the mid-depth of the recirculating flume and are found to be in good agreement. This model is applied to Suyoung Bay in Pusan of Korea to verify the field applicability of the model and to investigate on the SS (suspended solids) diffusion phenomena at the bay. Behaviors of discharging SS from Suyoung River at normal river flow and flood river flow are predicted. The numerical results appear to be reasonable and qualitative agreement with field data. The influence of settling velocity on the concentration distribution of SS is also investigated. In case of not considering settling velocity, SS concentration at surface layer is higher than that at lower layer, but in case of considering settling velocity, SS concentration at lower layer is higher than that at surface layer. The fluctuation of SS concentration at surface layer is large due to the strong mixing, but the fluctuation of the concentration at lower layer is small due to the weak mixing. SS diffusion patterns at flood river flow are similar to those at normal river flow, while the concentration at that flow is so much higher than that at this flow. SS concentration increases with time until the peak discharge occurs, but the concentration decreases with time with decreasing river flow after the peak discharge.
The adhesion characteristics of the thermoplastic resins such as PE, PP PVC, PET and PS were investigated on the surfaces of conventional steel (SS41), steel (SS41P) treated with ultrasonic waves and the SS41P coated with several ceramic powders (SS41PC) by the plasma spray. Alumina (Al$_2$O$_3$), alumina titania (Al$_2$O$_3$95%, TiO$_2$ 5%) and zirconia yttria (ZrO$_2$ 95%, $Y_2$O$_3$5% ) were used for the materials plasma spray The morphologies, surface hardness, surface roughness, and contact angles on SS41, SS41P, and SS41PC were examined. The tensile shear strength and peel strength of the polymers which were attached to the surfaces of ceramics coated on SS41P also were measured. The tensile shear strength and peel strength of polymers adhered to ceramic surface coated on steel were found to be stronger than those of conventional steel. The tensile shear strength and peel strength of the polymers adhered on the surfaces of ceramics coated steel increased in the following order PE > PET > PP > PS > PVC. The high adhesion strength of PE may be attributed to the surface roughness and its anchor effect on the ceramic surface.

The stormwater runoff from the increasing paved roads and vehicles resulted in the increase in the pollutants load to adjacent water bodies. The granular media filtration facilities are the most widely adopted to minimize the non-point source pollution from motorways. It is essential to consider the severe variation of hydraulic condition, suspended solid (SS) characteristics, and the medium characteristics for stormwater management filter. In this study, different types of media, including sand, were tested and the performance of downflow sand filters was investigated under various linear velocity and influent solid particle size. Results showed that the best medium is the coarse sand with large grain size, which showed the specific SS removal before clogging of more than $8.498kg/m^2$, the SS removal of higher than 95%, and minimum head loss. Linear velocity did not affect the total solid removal, while the performance was improved when fine solid was introduced. It is suggested that the life of a downflow sand filter bed can be extended by deep bed filtration when influent particles are fine. However, the captured particles can be washed out after a long period of operation.
