  • This study investigated population fluctuations in two mite species in apple orchards over 20-year period. The occurrence of two major mite pests infesting apple trees, two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae and European red mite Panonychus ulmi (Acari: Tetranychidae), was investigated from 1992 to 2011 in major apple-producing districts, including four to eight cities, in the southern part of the Republic of Korea. The 20-year trend revealed that more orchards were infested by T. urticae from 1992 to 1999, but thereafter P. ulmi became dominant. The observed mean density of P. ulmi was consistent, whereas that of T. urticae fluctuated during this period. The analysis of occurrence in four time periods reveals that the density of T. urticae decreased after 2002. The monthly sampling, revealed that the density of P. ulmi was higher in April, whereas the density of T. urticae was higher from May to August. This change may be due to a change in the frequency of pesticide spraying, ground vegetation management, a decrease in nitrogen fertilization, and the overall orchard management practices. However, this projection should be examined in more detail. On the basis of the findings of this study, it can be concluded that cultural practices, including fertilization, and environmental changes, such as pesticide spray frequency and integrated pest management practices, affect species dominance and population densities of the two mite species in apple orchards.

  • The susceptibility of the twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae and the predatory mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis to extracts of Melia azedarach, Piper nigrum, Syringa velutina and their mixtures was evaluated in laboratory bioassays. Treatments of mixture 1 and 2 were effective against adult females of T. urticae and yielded 73.3 and 70.7% adulticidal activity at 7 days after treatment, respectively. Treatment of mixture 3 revealed 62.7% adulticidal activity. However, M. azedarach, P. nigrum and S. velutina had lower adulticidal activity than the other treatments. Adult females of T. urticae treated with mixture 1 and 2 produced only 11.1-16.7% as many eggs as control females did. All the plant extracts tested were ineffective to against the eggs of T. urticae. Plant extracts tested had little effect on the survival of P. persimilis adult females. Moreover, reproduction of P. persimilis adult females and eclosion of eggs deposited by treated predators were not seriously affected. Treatment of plant extracts tested showed no toxic effect on P. persimilis eggs and produced 100% hatchability. These results suggest that mixture 1 and 2 might be used for the control of T. urticae, and expected to be promising candidates for use in integrated mite management program with P. persimilis.

  • Chloronicotinyl derivatives were synthesized by substitution of amino in 3-pyridylmethylamine with phosphite groups and their insecticidal and fungicidal activities were determined. At 500 ppm, compound 4 with methyl and butyl group in phosphonate and compound 5, 6, 7, and 8 with two butyl, 2,2,2-trifluorotehtyl, 2-ethylhexyl, phenyl, respectively, in phosphonate showed 90% insecticidal activities against brown plant-hopper (Nilaparvate lugens). These compounds showed, however, poor insecticidal activities against diamond-back moth (Plutella xylostella) and two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) (<65%), suggesting that insecticidal activity of chloronicotinyl derivatives containing phosphorus moieties are species-dependent. Newly synthesized chloronicotinyl derivatives with halogen and/or heterocycle (compound $10{\sim}21$) did not show insecticidal activities. We also determined fungicidal activity of the synthesized chloronicotinyl derivatives against rice sheath blight (Pyricularia grisea), cucumber gray mold (Bortytis cinerea), tomato late blight (Phytophthora infestans), wheat leaf rust (Puccinia recondita), and barley powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis). Compound 10 with butyl and 4-nitrophenyl in phosphonate at 10 ppm showed 85% fungicidal activity against rice blast, suggesting that chloronicotinyl derivatives containing phosphorus moieties could be developed as a fungicidal agent of a novel chemical structure.

  • Chemical derivative synthesis of ricinine, an active compound of Ricinus communis which showed high mortality against brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens), was performed to improve its pesticidal activity and the toxicity of 12 synthetic derivatives against major insect pests and phytopathogenic fungi were examined. Carbamate derivatives of ricinine could be synthesized from the precursor of ricinine, chloronorricinine and norricinine, whereas the derivatives were not synthesized from chlororicinic acid and ricinic acid having ketone group of pyridine ring. In organophosphates, reaction with oxon type of phosphate gave better yield than thiono type. Among the organophosphate derivatives of ricinine, thiono type of derivative structure gave $96.3%{\sim}100%$ mortality of the brown planthopper and the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) at 500 ${\mu}g/ml$ level. On the other hand, carbamate derivatives did not show insecticidal activity. In the fungicidal activity of ricinine derivatives, the derivative having amino radical at the 2 position of ricinine gave 85 to 100% of mycelium growth inhibition effect against ten major plant pathogens at the 200 ${\mu}g/ml$ level. In particular, the control value of the derivative on the rice blast (Pyricularia grisea) and barley powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis) at the 250 ${\mu}g/ml$ level in vivo under greenhouse conditions was 92% and 96%, respectively.

  • Pest population density models are very important to monitor the initial occurrence and to understand the continuous fluctuation pattern of pest in pest management. This is one of the major issues in agriculture because these predictions make pesticides more effective and environmental impact of pesticides less. In this study, we combined and predicted the mortality change of pest caused by pesticides with temperature change and population dynamic model. Sensitive strain of two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch) with kidney bean leaf as host was exposed to mixed acaricide, Acrinathrin-Spiromesifen and organotin acaricide, Azocyclotin, at 20, 25, 30, and $35^{\circ}C$, respectively. There was significant difference in mortality of T. urticae among pesticides and temperatures. We used DYMEX to simulate population density of T. urticae and predicted that the initial management time and number of chemical control would be changed in the future with climate change. There would be implications for strategies for pest management and selection process of pesticide in the future corresponding climate change.

  • A major concern regarding the collection and storage of biodiversity information is the inefficiency of conventional taxonomic approaches in dealing with a large number of species. This inefficiency has increased the demand for automated, rapid, and reliable molecular identification systems and large-scale biological databases. DNA-based taxonomic approaches are now arguably a necessity in biodiversity studies. In particular, DNA barcoding using short DNA sequences provides an effective molecular tool for species identification. We constructed a large-scale database system that holds a collection of 5531 barcode sequences from 2429 Korean species. The Korea Barcode of Life database (KBOL, http://koreabarcode.org) is a web-based database system that is used for compiling a high volume of DNA barcode data and identifying unknown biological specimens. With the KBOL system, users can not only link DNA barcodes and biological information but can also undertake conservation activities, including environmental management, monitoring, and detecting significant organisms.

  • This article deal with petrotectonic setting and petrogenesis from petrography and chemical analyses of the Cretaceous volcanic and intrusive rocks in the Cheolwon basin. The volcanic rocks are composed of basalts in Gungpyeong Formation, Geumhaksan Andesite, and rhyolitic rocks (Dongmakgol Tuff, Rhyolite and Jijangbong Tuff), and intrusive rocks, Bojangsan Andesite, granite porphyry and dikes. According to petrochemistry, these rocks represent medium-K to high-K basalt, andesite and rhyolite series that belong to calc-alkaline series, and generally show linear compositional variations of major and trace elements with increase in $SiO_2$ contents, on many Harker diagrams. The incompatible and rare earth elements are characterized by high enrichments than MORB, and gradually high LREE/HREE fractionation and sharp Eu negative anomaly with late strata, on spider diagram and REE pattern. Some trace elements exhibit a continental arc of various volcanic arcs or orogenic suites among destructive plate margins on tectonic discriminant diagrams. These petrochemical data suggest that the basalts may have originated from basaltic calc-alkaline magma of continental arc that produced from a partial melt of upper mantle by supplying some aqueous fluids from a oceanic crust slab under the subduction environment. The andesites and rhyolites may have been evolved from the basaltic magma with fractional crystallization with contamination of some crustal materials. Each volcanic rock may have been respectively erupted from the chamber that differentiated magmas rose sequentially into shallower levels equivalenced at their densities.

  • This study reports the results of natural enemy application against four insect pests on greenhouse sweet pepper in winter cropping system. Orius laevigatus ($3.3/m^2$) was released at two different times (Nov. 2005 & Feb. 2006) to control Frankliniella occidentalis, western flower thrips (WFT). Throughout the cropping season, the lowest level recorded of WFT was less than 2.0 individuals per yellow sticky trap. Amblyseius swirskii ($232.3/m^2$) was released four times (Nov. 2007 ~ Aug. 2008) to control Bemisia tabaci, tobacco whitefly (TWF). Until July 2008, TWF population had been suppressed lower than 6.6/trap. Phytoseiulus persimilis ($44.5/m^2$) was released seven times (Apr. 2008 ~ Aug. 2008) to control Tetranychus kanzawai, tea red spider mite (TRSM). As a result, TRSM population was suppressed lower than 1.7/1eaf. To control aphids, Aphidius colemani ($9.5/m^2$) was released seven times (Oct. 2004 ~ Jan. 2005), with the transplantation of banker plants ($5.5pot/660m^2$). As a whole, aphid's population has been successfully reduced to less than 2.0/leaf.

  • The Cretaceous Myeongseongsan Granite in the northwestern Gyeonggi Massif consists of a major pale pink-colored biotite monzogranite and a minor white-colored biotite alkaligranite. Low Sr and high Ba concentrations, negative Eu-anomalies in REE plot, negative Sr anomalies in spider diagram, a negative correlation between Sr and Rb, and positive correlations between Sr and Ba and $Eu/Eu^*$ indicate that a fractional crystallization of both plagioclase and K-feldspar played a significant role during magma evolution. The Myeongseongsan Granite is plotted in I-& S-type granites on I, S, A-type granite classification scheme. While the biotite monzogranite is plotted in unfractionated I-& S-type granite, the biotite alkaligranite is plotted in fractionated I-& S-type granite, which indicates that the biotite alkaligranite is a more differentiated product. In order to elucidate the nature of the protoliths of the peraluminous Myeongseongsan magma, we plotted in $Al_2O_3/TiO_2$ vs. $CaO/Na_2O$ and Rb/Sr vs. Rb/Ba diagrams, and they suggest that the Myeongseongsan Granite was derived from clay-poor metagreywackes and meta-psammites or their igneous counterparts. Whole-rock zircon saturation temperature indicates that the Myeongseongsan magma was melted at $740-799^{\circ}C$.
