  • A distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser and a high speed electroabsorption modulator (EAM) are integrated on the basis of the selective area growth technique. The typical threshold current is 4 to 6 mA, and the side mode suppression ratio is over 40 dB with single mode operation at 1550 nm. The DBR laser exhibits 2.5 to 3.3 mW fiber output power at a laser gain current of 100 mA, and a modulator bias voltage of 0 V. The 3 dB bandwidth is 13 GHz. A 10 Gbps non-return to zero operation with 12 dB extinction ratio is obtained. A four-channel laser array with 100 GHz wavelength spacing was fabricated and its operation at the designed wavelength was confirmed.

  • Reduction of 3-chloro-4-fluoropropiophenone by Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a whole cell biocatalyst was optimized. Effects of glucose, S. cerevisiae and 3-chloro-4-fluoropropiophenone concentrations on conversion of reduction reaction was investigated. Optimum concentrations of glucose, S. cerevisiae and 3-chloro-4-fluoropropiophenone were 100, 40 and 20 g/L, respectively. At optimum condition, 100% of conversion was achieved in 12 hours of reaction.

  • In this paper we propose a new visual servoing method for door opening with mobile manipulator. We use an eye-to-hand system that stereo camera is mounted on mobile platform, and adopt the position-based method. The previous methods for door opening mostly used eye-in-hand system with mono camera and required predefined knowledge such as radius and position about door grip, which was mainly caused by using mono cam era. This is also a severe constraint for pursuing general-purpose algorithm for door opening. For overcoming such drawback, we use stereo camera and suggest a new method that detect the door grip and estimate its pose from stereo depth information without predefined knowledge. Al...

  • Ag/Ni multilayers with different bilayer thickness between 3 and 100 nm produced by DC magnetron puttering have been studied by cross-sectional TEM and nanoindentation. The micrograph shows perfect layered structure with sharp interfaces between Ag and Ni layers. Absolute hardness is calculated as a reference value to compare hardness of specimens regardless of indent depth. A hardness enhancement of nearly $100\%$ over the rule-of-mixtures values, calculated from the measured hardness of single Ag and Ni thin films, is observed. The hardness increases with decreasing bilayer thickness until 8nm. This enhancement shows a good agreement with Hall-Petch relation using grain size (one half of the bilayer thickness) confined within a layer. The deformation behavior can be explained by dislocation pile-up in smaller grains.

  • An optical sheet with microlens array (MLA) is designed and fabricated as a substitute for the prism sheets of LCD backlight. Using photoresist thermal reflow, MLAs were fabricated on PET film with thickness of $100{\mu}m$, and we measured the change of MLA profile in terms of exposure time, reflow temperature and reflow time.

  • This study was undertaken to examine the effect of amino acids on anoxia-induced cell injury in rabbit renal cortical slices. In order to induce anoxic cell injury, slices were exposed to a 100% $N_2$ atmosphere and control slices were exposed to 100% $O^2$. Irreversible cell injury was estimated by measuring lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release and alterations in renal cell function were examined by measuring p-aminohippurate (PAH) uptake. Anoxia caused the increase in LDH release in a time-dependent manner. Glycine and glutathione almost completely prevented anoxia-induced LDH release. Of amino acids tested, glycine and alanine exerted the protective effect against anoxia-induced cell injury. However, asparagine with amide side chain, leucine and valine with hydrocarbon side chain, and basic amino acids (lysine, histidine, and arginine) were not effective. Anoxia-induced inhibition of PAM uptake was prevented by glycine. ATP content was decreased by anoxia, which was not affected by glycine. Anoxia-induced depletion of glutathione was significantly prevented by glycine. These results suggest that neutral amino acids with simple structure exert the Protective effect against anoxia-induced cell injury the involvement of specific interaction of amino acids and cell structure.

  • This paper deals with output voltage characteristics analysis of outage and phase jump generator. As soon as the outage occurs the STS(Solid Transfer Switch)s are switched off. At the beginning of the outage the DG is required to limit the reverse current within the rated DG output current. In case of phase jump the DG output voltage phase should be adjusted with PLL. Simulation results show the output voltage characteristics of the generator.

  • Squid Sikhae is traditional salt-fermented food in Korea. We evaluated the standardization of optimal processing conditions for desirable quality-controlled squid Sikhae using analyses of physiochemical properties, microbiological species, and organoleptic tests. Among several squid Sikhae preparation processes, the optimal fermentation temperature sun-dried sea salt concentration, and fermentation period for squid Sikhae of acceptable quality were $10^{\circ}C$, 4%, and 6 days, respectively. Amino-N and volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) contents of the acceptable quality squid Sikhae were 162.51 mg/100 g and 15.25 mg/100 g, respectively.

  • We have studied critical currents of $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$ step-edge junctions with different step orientations with respect to the major axes of $SrTiO_3$ (100) substrates. The junctions were prepared by pulsed laser deposition and argon ion milling with photoresist mask. We investigated current-voltage characteristics and critical current of the junctions as a function of the angle. The junction critical current showed an angle dependent modulation with maxima near 0 or 90 degree and minima near 45 and 135 degrees. The experimental results were analyzed based on the microstructure of the junction along the step and the d-wave symmetry of $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$ superconductor.
