A Numerical Analysis on the Spray Characteristics at Different Injection System Parameters in a Common-rail Diesel Engine (연료분사계 변수의 변화에 따른 커먼레일 디젤엔진의 분무특성에 관한 수치적 분석)

  • This paper present the diesel spray characteristics at different injection system parameters in a HSDI diesel engine. The spray characteristics was calculated by the coupled simulation of fuel injection system model and three-dimensional KIVA-3V code with TAB spray model. The relevant injection parameters are accumulator volume, control chamber initial volume, control orifice diameter, needle valve diameter and nozzle chamber initial volume, etc. Parametric investigation with respect to twelve relevant injection parameters showed that there was a significant advantage in varying control chamber initial volume, control chamber orifice diameter, and nozzle chamber orifice diameter with respect to effect the SMD and fuel injection speed. Consequently, in order to design the fuel injection system for spray characteristics, it seems reasonable to suppose to be optimized the fuel injection system.

Change of Spray Characteristics with Mixing Port Length of Y-Jet Atomizers (Y-Jet 노즐에서의 혼합관 길이변화에 따른 분무특성 연구)

  • Experiments have been performed to find out the effect of the mixing port length of Y-jet atomizers on the spray performance, using air and water as the test fluids. Water and air flow rates and drop sizes were measured at each injection pressure condition for different mixing port length. The air flow rate was almost unaffected by the change of the mixing port length. However, the water flow rate was relatively susceptible to the change of the mixing port length. The mixing point pressure was very much influenced by the mixing port length. Variations of spatial distribution of Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD, $D_{32}$) and the cross-section-averaged SMD ($D_{32,m}$) with different mixing port length and air/water mass flow rate ratio were examined. Generally, when the mixing port length was reduced, the mean drop size decreased and became spatially even.

  • 감압비등에 의한 미립화는 더 미세한 직경의 액적을 얻을 수 있고, 분무각이 증가하며, 더 좋은 혼합특성을 갖는 다는 점에서 단순 압력식 미립화와 차이가 난다. 감압비등이란 과열된 액체를 포화 압력 이하의 대기 중으로 분사하여 급격한 비등에 의해 이루어지는 미립화이다. 본 연구는 금속 연료를 이용한 추진기관의 산화제인 물 공급기술에 감압비등과정을 이용한 와류분무를 적용시키기 위해 수행됐다. 분열길이와 같은 거시적 특성은 Charge-Couple Device(CCD) 카메라를 이용해 측정하였고, Sauter Mean Diameter(SMD)와 SMD분포와 같은 미시적 특성은 Global Sizing Velocimetry(GSV) 시스템을 이용해 측정했다. 실험은 압력과 온도, 대류 속도를 변화시키며 진행했다.

A Study on the Atomization Characteristics of Effervescent Atomizer with PDPA (PDPA를 이용한 기체주입미립화기의 미립화 특성에 관한 연구)

  • An experimental study is performed on atomization characteristics and stable operating condition for injection of high viscous waste vegetable oil using effervescent atomizer with two aerator tubes. Consideration is given to the effects of ALR and liquid viscosity on the velocity and mean diameter of the injected droplet. It is found that (i) as ALR increases, the axial velocity of the droplet is increased, while half-velocity width and SMD are decreased regardless of the change in liquid viscosities, (ii) the rate of fine drop distribution occupied in the total spray field is increased with an increasing in ALR, and (iii) the effect of viscosity on atomization characteristics is minor.

  • I investigated experomentally the spray characteristics to the operating conditions and the shapes of internal mixing twin fluid atomizer. The wide variations of air per liquid ratio are conducted to predit the influences of the Sauter mean diameter(SMD), spray angle, distribution of drop size, the flowing condition of gas and length, flowing, area of gas and liquid, and diameter, number and place of the orifice. In this experiment, air per liquid raio, mixing chamber length per diameter, orifice diameter, and the flowing area ratio of gas and fluid influences greatly on SMD, spray angle, distribution of drop size and intermittent fluctuation region.

  • This paper presents disintegration process of the small rotational fuel injector. In order to understand disintegration precess, we measured droplet diameter, velocity and spray distribution by the PDPA(Phasse Doppler Particle Analyzer) system. Also spray was visualized by using Nd-Yag flash photography. From the test results, the liquid column emerging from the injection orifice is mainly controlled by the rotational speeds. Furthermore, droplet diameter(SMD) and spray distribution were strongly influenced by the diameter of the injection orifice.

  • In the analysis of the mass distribution and SMD(Sauter Mean Diameter), planar laser imaging technique is a convenient and useful one when compared to the mechanical pattemator or PDPA (Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer). But recorded signals at cameras and intensity of laser are distorted by attenuation. Using experimental datum and assumptions, we study measurement errors due to attenuation in plannar image technique.

  • Effects of injection conditions on a pintle injector which is proper to recent liquid rocket engines requiring low cost, low weight, high efficiency and reusability were studied. The pintle injector with a typical moving pintle was used for atmospheric experiment using water and air. Injection pressures of water were considered 0.5 and 1.0 bar, 0.1 to 1.0 bar for injection pressures of air and 0.2 to 1.0 mm for pintle opening distance. Sauter mean diameters (SMD) of spray was measured at 50 mm distance from a pintle tip and SMD was treated as a representative parameter in this study. As a result, because of shape characteristics of the pintle injector, there was a transient region between the pintle opening distances of 0.6 and 0.7 mm and this region affected to mass flow rates and SMDs. Also, Reynolds numbers for gas, Weber numbers and momentum ratios were adopted as major non-dimensional paramters and the momentum ratio has strong correlation with SMD.

Development of Hybrid Model for Simulating of Diesel Spary Dynamics (디젤분무의 모사를 위한 혼합 모델의 개발)

  • A number of atomization and droplet breakup models have been developed and used to predict the diesel spray characteristic. Most of these models could not provide reasonable computational result of the diesel spray characteristic because they have only considered the primary breakup. A hybrid model is, therefore, required to develop by considering the primary and secondary breakup of liquid jet. according to this approach, wave breakup(WB) model was used compute the primary breakup of the liquid jet and droplet deformation and breakup(DDB) model was used for the secondary breakup of droplet. Development of hybrid model by using KIVA-II code was performed by comparing with the experimental data of spray tip penetration and SMD from the literature. A hybrid model developed in this study could provide the good agreement with the experimental data of spray tip penetration. The prediction results of SMD were in good agreement between 0.5 and 1.0 ms after the start of injection. Numerical results obtained by the present hybrid model have the good agreement with the experimental data with the breakup time constant in WB model of 30, and DDB model constant Ck of 1.0 when the droplet becomes less than 95% of maximum droplet diameter injected.

  • The effects of principal dimensions of internal mixing twin-fluid atomized and operating conditions on the atomizing characteristics are experimentally investigated. The tests are conducted over the wide range of air/liquid ratio to predict influences of the diameter and length of nozzle, contacting angle between air and liquid in the mixing chamber, and air orifice diameter on the mean drop size(SMD), spray angle, distribution of drop size, and spray dispersion, And also, initial distribution of liquid column by air stream within the mixing chamber are observed through the transparent nozzles. A He-Ne laser particle sizer(MALVERN Model 2604) was used to measure the Sauter.s mean diameter( $D_{321}$) and droplet sizes distribution. In this experiment the air/liquid ratio, mixing length and nozzle diameter have a great influence on SMD, spray angle, droplet sizes distribution and spray dispersion.
