The Objective of this study is to investigate the effect of internal swiller angle and swirl chamber aspect ratio of nozzle on spray characteristics for application of spray system in micro fabrication process. The macro-spray characterictics such as the spray angle and breakup process were obtained by photographs illustrating atomization. The micro-spray characteristics such as droplet size and axial velocity were measured by using PDA with swirler angle and swirl chamber aspect ratio. The swiller angles were $13.5^{\circ},\;27^{\circ},\;and\;40.5^{\circ}$. The swirl chamber aspect ratios were 1.2, 1.6, and 2.0. It was found that the smaller swirl chamber aspect ratio was, the larger axial velocity and drop size were.
This experiment was undertaken to investigate the spray characteristics of the conventional injection system and the ultrasonic energy added injection system. Test fuels include light oil and mixed light-BC oil. The mixed light-BC oil was injected at the normal temperature$(20^{\circ}C)$ and the high temperature$(95{\pm}2^{\circ}C)$ and injection pressure was $120kg/cm^2$. Sauter mean diameter was measured under the variation of the spray distance. To measure the droplet size, we used the Malvern system 2600C. Droplet size distribution was analyzed from the result data of Malvern system. It is also found that the condition of the ultrasonic energy added injection and high temperature injection generates the smaller droplets than that of the conventional injection.

The fuels of water-in-oil emulsion have a potential of reducing PM(Particulate Matter) and NOx emissions, and increasing combustion efficiency in the furnaces and the burners. For making the most of the beneficial of the secondary atomization due to the microexplosion, the water droplets distributed in the oil must have the optimal sizes. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the water droplet size distribution characteristics of the different types of the static mixers. For analysis the size distribution characteristics efficiently, image analysis system wes constructed and an appropriate image processing algorithm was developed. Two kinds of static mixers: Kenics type and RF type, were tested. As a results, RF type static mixer shows a better characteristics in the mean drop size, particularly in the condition of high water content.

The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of the ethanol blending in diesel-ethanol blended fuels on the spray and combustion characteristics in a common-rail four-cylinder diesel engine. For the analysis of the spray characteristics, the spray images were obtained using a high speed camera with metal-halide lamps. From these spray images, the macroscopic spray characteristics such as the spray tip penetration and spray cone angle were investigated. Also, the combustion characteristics including the combustion pressure and the rate of heat release were studied with the analysis of the exhaust emissions in diesel-ethanol blended fuel driven diesel engine. It can be confirmed from the experiment on spray characteristics of diesel-ethanol blended fuels that the increased ethanol blending ratio induced the decrease of the spray tip penetration after the end of the injection. The spray cone angle slightly increased by the blending of ethanol fuel. In the experiment on atomization characteristics, the ethanol blending caused the improvement of the diesel atomization performance. On the other hand, at the same engine load condition, the increase of the ethanol blending ratio lead to lengthen the ignition delays, and to decrease the peak combustion pressure and the rate of heat release. Totally, the combustion and emission characteristics of ULSD and DE10 showed similar characteristics. However, in the case of DE20, CO and HC rapidly increased, and $NO_x$ decreased. It can be believed that 20% ethanol disturbed the combustion of diesel-ethanol blended fuel due to the low cetane number and evaporation.
In the case of heavy duty diesel engines, the Urea-SCR system is currently considered to reduce the NOx emission as a proved technology, and it is widely studied to get the high performance and durability. However, the nozzles to inject the urea-water solution into the exhaust pipe occur some problems, including the nozzle clogging, deposition of urea-water solution on the inner wall of the exhaust pipe, resulting in the production of urea salt. In this study, a swirl-type twin-fluid nozzle to produce more fine droplets was used as a method to solve the problems. The effect of the nozzle cap geometry, including the length to diameter ratio ($l_o/d_o$) and chamfer, on the spray characteristics were investigated experimentally. The length to diameter ratio of nozzle cap were varied from 0.25 to 1.125. The chamfer angle of the nozzle cap was constant at 90o. The mean velocity and droplet size distributions of the spray were measured using a 2-D PDA (phase Doppler analyzer) system, and the spray half-width, AMD (arithmetic mean diameter) and SMD (Sauter mean diameter) were analyzed. At result, The larger length to diameter ratio of nozzle cap were more small SMD and AMD. The effect of the chamfer did increase the radial velocity, while it did not affect the atomization effect.

Recently, many technologies have been developed in order to satisfy stringent emission regulations. However, in the case of diesel engines, the stringent emission regulations with respect to NOx and PM have not yet been satisfied. A dramatic reduction in the NOx and PM emissions could be achieved by using after-treatment systems such as lean NOx trap (LNT) and urea-SCR systems. However, the high temperature in the exhaust pipe affects the spray behavior of the secondary injector, which is used for supplying the Urea-SCR. Because of this high temperature, it is difficult to achieve uniform distribution of the reducing agent in the manifold. In this paper, the characteristics of a urea-SCR injector used for injecting in the exhaust pipe are presented. The purpose of this study was to investigate the spray characteristics of the injector, such as the spray angle, injection quantity, and SMD. In addition, laser diagnostics and high-speed-camera images were used to analyze the injector spray characteristics and to present a distribution of reduction in the transparent manifold.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effects of ethanol blending ratio and fuel temperature in diesel-ethanol blended fuel on the spray-atomization characteristics in a high pressure common-rail injection system. In this work, a diesel fuel and three blended fuels were used as test fuels. Blended fuels were made by blending ethanol with a purity 99.9% to diesel fuel, from 0% to 30%. In order to keep diesel-ethanol blending stability, 5% of biodiesel fuel as volumetric ratio was added into test fuels. The fuel temperature was controled in steps with 40K, from 290K to 370K. Macroscopic spray characteristics were investigated by analyzing the spray tip penetration and spray cone angle through spray images obtained from visualization system. In addition, in order to study microscopic spray characteristics of ethanol blended fuels, the droplet diameter, was analyzed using the droplet measuring system. It is revealed that the spray tip penetration is similar regardless of ethanol blending ratio. As ethanol blending ratio is increased, the spray cone angle becomes wider. It is shown that the spray cone angle is affected by low viscosity and density of ethanol. As the fuel temperature increases, the spray tip penetration and spray cone angle become shorter and narrower respectively. The SMD of ethanol blending fuels is smaller than that of diesel fuel because of low viscosity and surface tension of ethanol.
In recently, a study on the lean combustion is investigated intensively, because it is expected that this method may decrease the harmful exhaust gas and improve fuel economy in gasoline engine. The problems of lean combustion system in gasoline engine are ignition difficulty, misfire and instability of combustion. The investigation on the optimization of fuel metering and the control of mixing gas flow may be critical to improve the performance of lean combustion. In the fuel injection gasoline engine, the formation of mixture influences strongly on the engine performance such that the importance of fuel metering system becomes apparent. First of all, a study on the fuel breakup characteristics of gasoline fuel injector was carried out in this paper. Fuel injectors are pintle and 4hole-2spray type. The purpose of this study is to clarify the atomization mechanism of spray injected into atomosphere field through electronic controlled-fuel injectors, and to analyze spray characteristics such as drop size distribution and mean drop diameter produced at fuel injector. In this paper, the spray development is observed by taking photograps using 80mm still-camera system, and drop sizes are measured by PMAS. From these experiment, spray pattern injected from gasoline fuel injectors was investigated clearly. Also, it was found that SMD and drop size distribution of injected fuel spray from gasoline fuel injectors.

An experimental study was performed to understand spray characteristics of the slinger injector. system for the micro turbojet engine. In this fuel injection system, fuel is sprayed and atomized in the combustor by centrifugal forces of engine shaft. This experimental apparatus consist of a high speed rotating Spindle, slinger injector, pressure tank and acrylic case. The droplet size and velocity were measured by PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) and spray was visualized by using Nd-Yag laser-based flash photography. From the test results, the droplet size(SMD) is largely affected to rotational speed, mass flow rate and the number of injection orifice. From the this experimental study, we could understand the spray characteristics of the slinger injection system and obtain the optimum shape of the slinger injector nozzle which is suitable for the micro turbojet engine.

The atomization characteristics of the dual air supplying twin-fluid nozzle were investigated experimentally using PIV and PDA systems. The two-fluid nozzle is composed of three main parts: the feeding injector to supply fluid that is controlled by a PWM (pulse-width modulation) mode, the adaptor as a device with the ports for supplying the carrier and assist air and the main nozzle to produce the spray. The main nozzle has the swirl tip with four equally spaced tangential slots, which give the injecting fluid an angular momentum. The angle of the swirl tip varied with 0$^{\circ}$ 30$^{\circ}$, 60$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$, and the ratios of carrier air to assist air and ALR(total air to liquid) were 0.55 and 1.23, respectively. The macroscopic behavior of the spray was investigated using PIV system, and the mean velocity, turbulent intensity and SMD distributions of the sprays were measured using PDA system. As the results, the mean axial velocity at the spray centerline decrease with the increase of the swirl angle. The turbulent intensities of the axial and radial velocity were increased with the increase of the swirl angle. The mean SMD (Sauter mean diameter) of the radial direction along the axial distance shows the lowest value at the swirl angle of 60$^{\circ}$.
