We have analyzed the characteristics of IR lens mounting with elastomer and applied the results to the mounting of a silicon lens with diameter 117 mm which is the objective of a thermal imaging system. The elastomer, the 577 primerless silicone adhesive (Dow Corning Co.) which is heat cure type, and the mount material, A16061 are used for our analysis. Theoretical analysis gives the result that the space between lens and mount is required to be more than 250 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ under the operational temperature conditions of -40~+6$0^{\circ}C$.
KITSAT-3, launched at May 26 1999, has an earth observation optical payload named MEIS (Multi-spectral Earth Imaging System). The MEIS is a Managin mirror telescope of aperture size of 95mm, and it images the ground with the ground sampling distance of 13.8m over 48km at the altitude of 720km using three different observations bands. This paper first presents the design and then the optics, relating results of manufacturing, integration and test. Finally it briefly discusses the current status of MEIS operation.
A continuous wave deuterium fluoride (DF) chemical laser was designed and manufactured, and we have achieved DF laser beam generation with the maximum output power of 101 W. The gain medium is vibration-rotationally excited DF molecules produced by F+D$_2$ cold reaction through supersonic diffusion mixing in an optical cavity. F atoms are produced in a combustor by F$_2$+ H$_2$ reaction and injected into the cavity through a supersonic nozzle. The optimal chemical efficiency was measured to be 5.12% and specific power to be 96.5 J/g.
The Talbot effect of an elongated circular (EC) grating composed of a line grating and two semicircular gratings with well matched pitches is experimentally presented. As the relative positions between the fixed EC grating and the moving Talbot image of another EC grating or a self Talbot image are one-dimensionally deformed, we can visually observe moire fringes generated by their superposition. Two examples of their applications, that is, the measurement of the wedged angle of a wedged prism and of the fine rotational angle of a mirror are described.cribed.
We prove that 3-D profile mapping using white light interferometry has systematic errors caused by aberrations of the optimal system. The tilt of an object invokes an offset between the object and the reference ray, which eventually makes the aberration cancel incompletely. The fringe peak of a white light interferogram is mainly affected by the aberration effect while the envelope peak remains stable. By the difference between the two peaks, it is easily confirmed how much the error existed in the fringe peak. Experimental results prove that the error caused by aberration is varied by object tilt, microscope NA, optics alignment within the range of $\pm$50nm.

This document was prepared to review and summarize the analytical methods for airborne and bulk asbestos. Basic principles, shortcomings and advantages for asbestos analytical instruments using phase contrast microscopy(PCM), polarized light microscopy(PLM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), transmission electron microscopy(TEM), scanning electron microscopy(SEM) were reviewed. Both PCM and PLM are principal instrument for airborne and bulk asbestos analysis, respectively. If needed, analytical electron microscopy is employed to confirm asbestos identification. PCM is used originally for workplace airborne asbestos fiber and its application has been expanded to measure airborne fiber. Shortcoming of PCM is that it cannot differentiate true asbestos from non asbestos fiber form and its low resolution limit ($0.2{\sim}0.25{\mu}m$). The measurement of airborne asbestos fiber can be performed by EPA's Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) method, World Health Organization (WHO) method, International Standard Organization (ISO) 10312 method, Japan's Environmental Asbestos Monitoring method, and Standard method of Indoor Air Quality of Korea. The measurement of airborne asbestos fiber in workplace can be performed by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 7400 method, NIOSH 7402 method, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) ID-160 method, UK's Health and Safety Executive(HSE) Methods for the determination of hazardous substances (MDHS) 39/4 method and Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (KOSHA) CODE-A-1-2004 method of Korea. To analyze the bulk asbestos, stereo microscope (SM) and PLM is required by EPA -600/R-93/116 method. Most bulk asbestos can be identified by SM and PLM but one limitation of PLM is that it can not see very thin fiber (i.e., < $0.25{\mu}m$). Bulk asbestos analytical methods, including EPA-600/M4-82-020, EPA-600/R-93/116, OSHA ID-191, Laboratory approval program of New York were reviewed. Also, analytical methods for asbestos in soil, dust, water were briefly discussed. Analytical electron microscope, a transmission electron microscope equipped with selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and energy dispersive X-ray analyser(EDXA), has been known to be better to identify asbestiform than scanning electron microscope(SEM). Though there is no standard SEM procedures, SEM is known to be more suitable to analyze long, thin fiber and more cost-effective. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) imaging protocol was developed to identify asbestos fiber. Although many asbestos analytical methods are available, there is no method that can be applied to all type of samples. In order to detect asbestos with confidence, all advantages and disadvantages of each instrument and method for given sample should be considered.
A surface plasmon sensor has been fabricated for detection of concentration and refractive-index of a mixed solution. Based on the Kretschmann-Raether attenuated-total-reflection configuration, the sensor consists of 54 nm-thick Ag metal layer under a prism and a cell containing the mixed solution. We have observed a nonlinear refractive-index change as the ethanol-water concentration increased. The experimental results show us that the detection limit of the SPR sensor is 3$\times$10$^{-2}$ % in ethanol mass ratio. The concentration-to-index curve shows a linear increase in the range of ethanol concentration from 0% to 50%, but a nonlinearity is observed beyond 50%. We have modeled the nonlinearity and compared it with the experimental results.
Optical payloads for earth-observation satellites become bigger as the required resolution becomes finer. For example, the diameter of the primary mirror of IKONOS, which has ground sampling distances of 1m/4m in panchromatic/multi spectral bands, is about 700mm. As the size of optical payload becomes bigger, the light-weighting of the mirrors becomes more significant. This paper presents the FEM results of the following four mirror types of 300 m diameter under gravity release and temperature changes: flat back mirror, single arch mirror, double arch mirror, and honeycomb sandwich mirror. Furthermore, this paper extends the FEM results to larger mirrors up to the diameter of 1m based on a general scaling law and Valenete\`s equation.
