A Study on Mechanical Properties of SM490-TMC Back Plate(40 mm) Steel by SAW Welding (SM490-TMC 후판(40 mm) 강재의 SAW 용접을 통한 기계적 특성 연구)

  • SAW (Submerged Arc Welding) is often used for ship construction or welding pressure vessels and involves spraying a flux in a powder form to a welding site to a certain thickness and continuously supplying electrode wires therein. This welding method enables high current welding up to 1,500 to 3,000 A. Arc efficiency is higher than 95% and the technique allows clean work as it creates less welding fume, which is composed of fine metal oxide particles, and the arc beam is not exposed. In this study, SM490C-TMC thick plates were heterogeneously welded by SAW. Mechanical properties of welds were measured, and welds were assessed macroscopically and for adhering magnetic particles. The following conclusions were drawn. Bending tests showed no spots exploded on sample surfaces or any other defect, and plastic deformation testing confirmed sufficient weld toughness. These results showed the 1F welding method has no shortcomings in terms of bending performance.

  • This study investigates the fatigue characteristics of SM 490 A material specimens for the railway vehicle due to the welding type. The more stress ratio decreases, the more strength of fillet welded specimen decreases. At speciallly, when the stress ratio of TN(Plate with transverse fillet welded rib) specimens decreases 0.5, 0.1, and -0.1, the fatigue limit decreases unifomly. The strength of TN is higher than it of NCN in the compare of fillet welding type, but the strength of NCN(Non load-carrying cruciform fillet welded joint) is higher than it of CN(Load-carrying cruciform fillet welded joint), which these specimens have the rib in the both side. We analysis the strains on the weld positions of the TN specimens during the fatigue test for the investigation of crack initiation and crack growth. In the theses results, we could find the fatigue crack initiation point and time.

  • This study investigates the effects of the material properties and the fatigue behavior in the SM490A material specimens due to the low-temperature atmosphere. In the fatigue behavior, the low-temperature affects the fatigue life. As the temperature get low, the fatigue limit increase, also As the yield strength and the tensile strength increase, the impact absorbed energy decrease. The difference of fatigue lift represents to normal distribution and it is larger between the room temperature and the low temperature, but in the result of the cumulative density function, the effect of temperature is not too large on it.

  • This study investigates the fatigue lives of SM490A material(base metal) specimens and fillet weld specimens, which are made same material and weld method for the railway vehicle. These fatigue lives have a difference, the fatigue lives of weld specimen are shorter than those of base metal. We measured the strains on the weld positions of the specimens during the fatigue test for investigation of crack initiation and crack growth. In these result, we could find the information of the crack initiation position on weld bead and the history of crack growth. Also we knew that the fatigue crack initiation cycles and the changes of the strain which were affected the fractured surface roughness and morphology.

  • In this study, the chemical compositions and mechanical properties of high tensile strength steel plates in accordance with their thickness are quantitatively estimated, that are steel plates SM570 to be purposed to use in building structure. Test results of steel plates SM570 are compared with those of steel plates SS400 and steel plates SM490 mostly using building structure. It is found that chemical compositions, carbon equivalent, parameter of welding crack susceptibility, yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, and impact strength have satisfied the prescribed value in KS code for all case of thickness.

  • The brittle failure where is occurred the welding position of column-beam flange of WUF-B connection that consider about a seismic detail possess a superior ductility capacity before Northridge earthquake 1994, require newly study about WUF-B connection. SAC Steel Project suggests a seismic detail to FEMA-350 by supporting of FEMA. It revise shape of weld access holes of WUF-B connection, welding processand welding material etc, In spite of these revision, AISC Seismic Provisions (2005) prescribe WUF-B connection using an only OMF. Recently in Korea, as the earthquake of about seismic intensity 5 occur, the necessity of revision for connection seismic detail comes to the front in Korea and FEMA-350 connection seismic details are going to include in KBC-2008 as it is. In this study, two column-beam connection specimens were marked by using SM490, SN490 built-up H-section, and based on WUF-B detail prescription of FEMA350. The parameters of the specimens are types of steel (SM, SN), and evaluate the capacities of structure and seismic by experiment. Finally we confirm a superior ductility capacity aboutspecimens JB-1 and JB-2, using SM490 and SN490,and these specimens had sufficient OMF and SMF seismic capacity, as indicated in AISC Seismic Provisions (2005).

An Experimental Study on the Strengh and Ductility of High-Strength Flexural Members (고강도 휨재의 강도와 연성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The strength and ductility of steel flexural members are investigated experimentally in this study. As for the performance evaluation of flexural members. experimental studies on the 9 test specimens were carried out. Four specimens were fabricated from SM490 and five specimens were fabricated from SM570. The experimental results of the specimens were analyzed with focus on the flexural strength and ductility. The experimental results exhibited that all the specimens provided sufficient flexural strengthes which exceeded the nominal flexural strengthes specified in the current Limit State Design Specification by average ratio of 1.22. However. the experimental results showed that the compact-section specimens fabricated from SM570 did not provide the required rotational ductility. The yield-to-tensile strength ratio(YR) of SM570 of about 0.9 might be the causes of such insufficient capacities.

It is important to predict corrosive behaviour of rolling stock structures for safe service and to know relation between corrosion and fatigue life. This paper practiced electrochemical corrosion test of SS400 and SM490A. This study will examine the corrosive properties and differences of SS400 and SM490A from measuring corrosion potential and corrosion current density.

This paper practiced atmospheric corrosion test of SS400 and SM490A. This study practiced an additional test on the influence of heat-treatment. This test will examine corrosive behaviour and differences of SS400 and SM490A.
