  • The main obstacle to high track density in HDD id the structural resonances of the suspension. The most critical mode is sway mode and second torsion mode, when a data is read and written. It is common fact that the effect of two modes is smaller when a thickness is bulky. But the stiffness of suspension is smaller, the slider can follow a disk better. Because these two fact are reciprocal, a compromise is needed. So we investigated another method to improve band width without changing of the thickness of suspension but with changing of the shape. • In this paper, the comparison of the first order approximation schemes such as SLP (sequential linear programming), CONLIN(convex linearization), MMA(method of moving asymptotes) and the second order approximation scheme, SQP(sequential quadratic programming) was accomplished for optimization of and nonlinear structures. It was found that MMA and SQP(sequential quadratic programming) was accomplished for optimization of and nonlinear structures. It was found that MMA and SQP are the most efficient methods for optimization. But the number of function call of SQP is much more than that of MMA. Therefore, when it is considered with the expense of computation, MMA is more efficient than SQP. In order to examine the efficiency of MMA for complex optimization problem, it was applied to the helicopter tail boom considering column buckling and local wall buckling constraints. It is concluded that MMA can be a very efficient approximation scheme from simple problems to complex problems.

  • Electron-neutral collision frequency is one of the important parameters in the plasma physics. Recently, It is employed to monitor the plasma processing in industrial plasma engineering [1]. Using the wave-cutoff probe with network analyzer, the plasma impedance was measured in inductively coupled argon plasma and analyzed to determine the resonance frequency. The electron-neutral collision frequency is directly calculated from the resonance frequency. The calculated electron-neutral collision frequency is good agree with reference which is calculated by measured EEDF using single langmuir probe (SLP).

  • This study is concerned wiか the practical optimum design of concrete framed structures considering serviceability - deflection, crack, fatigue. The optimizing problems of framed structure are formulated with the objective function and the constraints which take the section properties as the design variables. The objective functions are formulated as the total cost of the structures and the constraints are derived by using the criteria with respect to safety and serviceability based on the part of concrete bridge in the Korea standard code of road bridge. The SLP method is introduced to solve the formulated nonlinear programming problems in this study and tested out through the numerical examples. This developed optimizing algorithm is tested out and examined through the numerical examples for the practical use of design on the concrete framed structures. And their results are compared and analyzed to examine the possibility of optimization, the applicability and the convergency of this algorithm.

  • This paper presents the application of system identification approaches for the safety assessment of RC-T type bridge based on the result of field test. For these problems, the moment of inertia of cross-sectional area and the natural frequency of bridge were used as structural parameters, the SAP90 program for the structural analysis and the SLP method for the minimum error. As a result, it is found that the proposed algorithm for this study appears applicable to real structures with reasonable complexity. It is shown that the introduction of approximate quadratic equations is more realistic and timesaving than the common methods.

  • Linear Programming(LP) is the term used for defining a wide range of optimization problems in which the objective function to be minimized or maximized is linear in the unknown variables and the constraints are a combination of linear equalities and inequalities. LP problems occur in many real-life economic situations where profits are to be maximized or costs minimized with constraint limits on resources. While the simplex method introduced in a later reference can be used for hand solution of LP problems, computer use becomes necessary even for a small number of variables. Problems involving diet decisions, transportation, production and manufacturing, product mix, engineering limit analysis in design, airline scheduling, and so on are solved using computers. This technique is called Sequential Linear Programming (SLP). This paper describes LP's problems and solves a LP's problems using the neural networks.

  • Superparamagnetic $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles with particle size from 10 to 20 nm were synthesized by coprecipitation method. Subsequently, the $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles were used to fabricate $Fe_3O_4/SiO_2$ core-shell nanoparticles by sol-gel method. The $Fe_3O_4/SiO_2$ nanoparticles synthesized by sol-gel method exhibit the high uniformities of particle size and shape. We also investigated the heating characteristics of $Fe_3O_4$ and $Fe_3O_4/SiO_2$ nanoparticles for biomedical applications. The $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles show the faster temperature increase and the higher specific loss power(SLP) value than the $Fe_3O_4/SiO_2$ nanoparticles.

  • A diaphragm spring is an important component of a clutch assembly, characteristics of which depends largely on that of a diaphragm spring. A diaphragm spring is subject to high stress concentration in driving condition, which frequently causes cracks and fracture around finger area. In this paper, behavior of a diaphragm spring is analysed by finite element method to calculate sensitivity of design parameters, which is used to perform optimal design of diaphragm spring shape. As an object function, hoop stresses are taken and minimized to improve durability. Characteristics of the diaphragm is used as equality constraint to maintain the original design purpose and sequential linear programming(SLP) is utilized as an optimization tool. With optimized design, it is verified that concentrated stress is decreased maintaining release load characteristic.

  • In the bolted connections, bolt placements are generally described and are generally made in the direction of design effects and in the perpendicular direction to design effects. In these both directions, the reliability of the distance of bolts to the edges of connection plate and the distance of bolts to each other is investigated for high strength steel connections built up with high strength bolts in this study. For this purpose, simple SL (bearing type shear connection) and SLP (bearing type shear connection for body-fit bolts) type steel connections with St 52 grade steel plates with 8 different thicknesses and with 8.8D grade high strength bolts (HV) were constituted and analyzed under H (Dead Loads+Live Loads+Snow Loads+Roof Loads) and HZ (H Loads+Wind Loads+Earthquake Loads) loadings. Geometric properties, material properties and design actions were taken as random variables. Monte Carlo Simulation method was used to compute failure risk and the first order second moment method was used to determine the reliability indexes of those different distances describing the placement of bolts. Results obtained from computations have been presented in graphics and in a Table. Then, they were compared with some values proposed by some structural codes. Finally, new equations were constituted for minimum and maximum values of distances describing bolt placement by regression analyses performed on those results.

  • Numerical design optimization techniques are implemented for the improvement of the ram accelerator performance. The design object is to find the minimum ram tube length required to accelerate projectile from initial velocity $V_0$ to target velocity $V_e$. The premixture is composed of $H_2,\;O_2,\;N_2$ and the mole numbers of these species are selected as design variables. The objective function and the constraints are linearized during the optimization process and gradient-based Simplex method and SLP(Sequential Linear Programming) have been employed. With the assumption of two dimensional inviscid flow for internal flow field, the analyses of the nonequilibrium chemical reactions for 8 steps 7 species lave been performed. To determined the tube length, ram tube internal flow field is assumed to be in a quasi-steady state and the flow velocity is divided into several subregions with equal interval. Hence the thrust coefficients and accelerations for corresponding subregions are obtained and integrated for the whole velocity region. With the proposed design optimization techniques, the total ram tube length had been reduced $19\%$ within 7 design iterations. This optimization procedure can be directly applied to the multi-stage, multi-premixture ram accelerator design optimization problems.
