  • Simple Genetic Algorithm(SGA) proposed by J. H. Holland is a population-based optimization method based on the principle of the Darwinian natural selection. The theoretical foundations of GA are the Schema Theorem and the Building Block Hypothesis. Although GA does well in many applications as an optimization method, still it does not guarantee the convergence to a global optimum in GA-hard problems and deceptive problems. Therefore as an alternative scheme, there is a growing interest in a co-evolutionary system, where two populations constantly interact and co-evolve. In this paper we propose an extended schema theorem associated with a schema co-evolutionary algorithm(SCEA), which explains why the co-evolutionary algorithm works better than SGA. The experimental results show that the SCEA works well in optimization problems including deceptive functions.

  • In this study, we proposed a fuzzy gain scheduler with intelligent learning algorithm for a reactor control. In the proposed algorithm, we used the gradient descent method to learn the rule bases of a fuzzy algorithm. These rule bases are learned toward minimizing an objective function, which is called a performance cost function. The objective of fuzzy gain scheduler with intelligent learning algorithm is the generation of adequate gains, which minimize the error of system. The condition of every plant is generally changed as time gose. That is, the initial gains obtained through the analysis of system are no longer suitable for the changed plant. And we need to set new gains, which minimize the error stemmed from changing the condition of a plant. In this paper, we applied this strategy for reactor control of nuclear power plant (NPP), and the results were compared with those of a simple PI controller, which has fixed gains. As a result, it was shown that the proposed algorithm was superior to the simple PI controller.

  • In this paper, a new efficient algorithm for global motion estimation is proposed. This algorithm uses a previous 4-parameter model based global motion estimation algorithm and M-estimator for improving the accuracy and robustness of the estimate. The first algorithm uses the block based motion vector fields and which generates a coarse global motion parameters. And second algorithm is M-estimator technique for getting precise global motion parameters. This technique does not increase the computational complexity significantly, while providing good results in terms of estimation accuracy. In this work, an initial estimation for the global motion parameters is obtained using simple 4-parameter global motion estimation approach. The parameters are then refined using M-estimator technique. This combined algorithm shows significant reduction in mean compensation error and shows performance improvement over simple 4-parameter global motion estimation approach.

  • In this paper, we propose a simple algorithm to calculate the numbers of the passing cars by using an image processing sensor for the digital black and white images with 256 tone level. Shadow is one of the most troublesome factor in image processing. By differencing the tone level, we cannot discriminate between the body of the car and its shadow. In our proposed algorithm, the area of the shadow is excluded by recognizing the position of each traffic lane. For real-time operation and simple calculation, two lines of the tone level are extracted and the existences of cars are recognized. In the experimental application on a high-way, the recognition rate of the real-time operation is more than 94%.

  • We propose a new method for speech/non-speech classifiers based on concepts of the adaptive boosting (AdaBoost) algorithm in order to detect speech for robust speech recognition. The method uses a combination of simple base classifiers through the AdaBoost algorithm and a set of optimized speech features combined with spectral subtraction. The key benefits of this method are the simple implementation, low computational complexity and the avoidance of the over-fitting problem. We checked the validity of the method by comparing its performance with the speech/non-speech classifier used in a standard voice activity detector. For speech recognition purpose, additional performance improvements were achieved by the adoption of new features including speech band energies and MFCC-based spectral distortion. For the same false alarm rate, the method reduced 20-50% of miss errors.

  • To relize the future intelligent robot the development of a special-purpose processor for a coordinate transformation is evidently challenging task. In this case the complexity of a hardware architecture strongly depends on the adopted algorithm. In this paper we have used an inverse kinemetics algorithm based on incremental unit computation method. This method considers the 3-axis articulated robot as the combination of two types of a 2-axis robot: polar robot and 2-axis planar articulated one. For each robot incremental units in the joint and Cartesian spaces are defined. With this approach the calculation of the inverse Jacobian matrix can be realized through a simple combinational logic gate. Futhermore, the incremental computation of the DDA integrator can be used to solve the direct kinematics. We have also designed a hardware architecture to implement the proposed algorithm. The architecture consists of serveral simple unitsl. The operative unit comprises several basic operators and simple data path with a small bit-length. The hardware architecture is realized byusing the EPLD. For the straight-line motion of the KAIST arm we have obtained maximum end effector's speed of 12.6 m/sec by adopting system clock of 8 MHz.

  • This paper proposes a simple encryption technology for space-time block coding algorithm. Space-time block coding algorithm uses two antennas in transmitting data which consists of original data and transformed data for the purpose of combining in the receiver. This kind of two transmission antenna data could be exchanged and transmitted on each other's antenna individually, which can be used as a simple encryption algorithm. Encryption timing control informations should be shared between transmitter and receiver beforehand. It is shown that the proposed architecture can give performance enhancement compared with no encryption cases.

  • This paper describes Genetic Algorithm-Based Relay Search Method, RS-GA, which is developed in this study to search the multiple design variables in the design space. The RS-GA based on Simple-GA consists of some functions to search many variables from some wide variable space. It repeats a Simple-GA, that is the convergence process of the Simple-GA, which makes many time reiteration itself. From the results of the numerical studies, it was actually found that RS-GA can search all peak-variable from the 2D functions including 5 peaks. Finally, RS-GA applied for design-strengthening problems in composite plate girder bridges using the external prestressing technique is also verified.

  • A simple and general bit log-likelihood ratio (LLR) expression is provided for Gray-coded rectangular quadrature amplitude modulation (R-QAM) signals. The characteristics of Gray code mapping such as symmetries and repeated formats of the bit assignment in a symbol among bit groups are applied effectively for the simplification of the LLR expression. In order to reduce the complexity of the max-log-MAP algorithm for LLR calculation, we replace the mathematical max or min function of the conventional LLR expression with simple arithmetic functions. In addition, we propose an implementation algorithm of this expression. Because the proposed expression is very simple and constructive with some parameters reflecting the characteristic of the Gray code mapping result, it can easily be implemented, providing an efficient symbol de-mapping structure for various wireless applications.

  • A new approach, referred to as a successive zooming genetic algorithm (SZGA), is Proposed for identifying a global solution for continuous optimization problems. In order to improve the local fine-tuning capability of GA, we introduced a new method whereby the search space is zoomed around the design point with the best fitness per 100 generation. Furthermore, the reliability of the optimized solution is determined based on the theory of probability. To demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm, a simple genetic algorithm, micro genetic algorithm, and the proposed algorithm were tested as regards for the minimization of a multiminima function as well as simple functions. The results confirmed that the proposed SZGA significantly improved the ability of the algorithm to identify a precise global minimum. As an example of structural optimization, the SZGA was applied to the optimal location of support points for weight minimization in the radial gate of a dam structure. The proposed algorithm identified a more exact optimum value than the standard genetic algorithms.
