Colour consistency is an important consideration when selecting pigments used on works of art. In this study, we analyse the colour difference between two sets of synthetic blue glass pigments acquired at least 8 years apart from the same manufacturer in Japan. The old pigment set (unused, dry powder with four different grain sizes) appears faded compared to the new set. These pigments are made available for artistic use, commonly in Nihonga or Japanese paintings. Raman spectroscopy and SEM-EDS results characterize these pigments as cobalt aluminate spinels dissolved in leaded glaze, a special class of complex coloured inorganic pigments that is not well-understood in the field of conservation. Colour difference between the old and new pigments with four different grain sizes were quantified by analysing photomicrographs with image analysis software. Blue pigments with coarse and extremely fine grains showed significant colour change compared to pigments with medium and fine grain sizes. The high occurrence of crystallites in the finer grains give a final colour that is bluer and lighter. Possible causes for the colour difference including manufacturing methods and storage environment are discussed.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to identify physicochemical properties such as chemical composition, size, shape and crystal structure of powder byproducts generated from a metallization process and its 1st scrubber in the semiconductor industry. Methods: Powder samples were collected from inner chambers during maintenance of the W-plug process equipment (using tungsten hexafluoride as a precursor material) and its 1st scrubber. The chemical composition, size and shape of the powder particles were determined by field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) equipped with an energy dispersive spectroscope (EDS). The crystal structure of the powders was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Results: From the SEM-EDS and TEM-EDS analyses, O and W were mainly detected, which indicates the powder byproducts are tungsten trioxide ($WO_3$), whereas Al, F and Ti were detected as low peaks. The powder particles were spherical and nearly spherical, and the particle size collected from the process equipment and its 1st scrubber showed 10-20 nm (agglomerates: 55-90 nm) and 16-20 nm (agglomerates: 80-120 nm) as primary particles, respectively. The XRD patterns of the yellow powder byproducts exhibit five peaks at $23.8^{\circ}$$33.9^{\circ}$$41.74^{\circ}$$48.86^{\circ}$ and $54.78^{\circ}$ which correspond to the (200), (220), (222), (400), and (420) planes of cubic $WO_3$. Conclusions: We elucidated the physicochemical characteristics of the powder byproducts collected from W-plug process equipment and its 1st scrubber. This study should provide useful information for the development of alternative strategies to improve the working environment and workers' health.
Using a customized diffusion bonder, we executed diffusion bonding for ring shaped white gold and red gold samples (inner, outer diameter, and thickness were 15.7, 18.7, and 3.0 mm, respectively) at a temperature of $780^{\circ}C$ and applied pressure of 2300 N in a vacuum of $5{\times}10^{-2}$ torr for 180 seconds. Optical microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used to investigate the microstructure and compositional changes. The mechanical properties were confirmed by Vickers hardness and shear strength tests. Optical microscopy and FE-SEM confirmed the uniform bonding interface, which was without defects such as micro pores. EDS mapping analysis confirmed that each gold alloy was 14K with the intended composition; Ni and Cu was included as coloring metals in the white and red gold alloys, respectively. The effective diffusion coefficient was estimated based on EDS line scanning. Individual values of Ni and Cu were $5.0{\times}10^{-8}cm^2/s$ and $8.9{\times}10^{-8}cm^2/s$, respectively. These values were as large as those of the melting points due to the accelerated diffusion in this customized diffusion bonder. Vickers hardness results showed that the hardness values of white gold and red gold were 127.83 and 103.04, respectively, due to solid solution strengthening. In addition, the value at the interface indicated no formation of intermetallic compound around the bonding interface. From the shear strength test, the sample was found not to be destroyed at up to 100,000 gf due to the high bonding strength. Therefore, these results confirm the successful diffusion bonding of 14K white-red golds with a diffusion bonder at a low temperature of $780^{\circ}C$ and a short processing time of 180 seconds.
$La_{0.2}Ca_{0.8}MnO_3$ colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) powders and pellets were synthesized by sol-gel process involving a stable metal chelate complex with acetylacetone. The structural changes of reaction mixture were monitored by FT-IR spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometry. The microstructure of sintered samples and the cation composition of gel powder were studied by FE-SEM/EDS and ICP-AES. The magnetic property was investigated as a function of temperature.

Samples with the nominal composition, B $i_{1.84}$P $b_{0.34}$S $r_{1.91}$C $a_{2.03}$C $u_{3.06}$$O_{10+{\delta}}$ high- $T_{c}$ superconductors containing MgO as an additive were fabricated by a solid-state reaction method. Samples with MgO of 5~30 wt% each were sintered at 820~86$0^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. The structural characteristics, critical temperature, grain size and image of mapping with respect to MgO contents were analyzed by XRD(X-Ray Diffraction), SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) and EDS(Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer) respectively. As MgO contents increased, intensity of MgO Peaks and ratio of Bi-2212 phase in superconductors intensified and the proportion of the phase transition from Bi-2223 to Bi-2212 was increased.

The Uiseong Tapriri Five-Storied stone pagoda has occurred exfoliation, granular disintegration and discoloration by physical and chemical weathering factors with the major deterioration occurring due to efflorescence by salt. According to the results of SEM-EDS and X-ray diffraction analysis, salts consists of gypsum, taranakite. Artificial salt weathering tests were carried out using the same type of rocks as those in the stone pagoda. The test results showed that efflorescence occurred on the surface of the rock, and that exfoliation and granular disintegration occurred inside the rock due to salt crystallization.
A new process to fabricate a composite LSCF-Ag cathode material for SOFCs by electron beam (e-beam) irradiation process has been suggested for operation under intermediate temperature range of $600-700^{\circ}C$. A composite LSCF-Ag cathode with uniformly coated Ag nanoparticles on the surface of the LSCF material was prepared by a facile e-beam irradiation method at room temperature. The morphology of the composite LSCF-Ag material was analyzed using a TEM, FE-SEM, and EDS. The prepared composite LSCF-Ag material can play a significant role in increasing the electro-catalytic activities and reducing the operating temperature of SOFCs. The performance of a tubular single cell prepared using the composite LSCF-Ag cathode, YSZ electrolyte and a Ni/YSZ anode was evaluated at reduced operating temperature of $600-700^{\circ}C$. The micro-structure and chemical composition of the single cell were investigated using a FE-SEM and EDS.

This study provides an assessment on a proposed method for separation of cesium, strontium, and barium using electrochemical reduction at a liquid bismuth cathode in LiCl-KCl eutectic salt, investigated via cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS). CV studies were performed at temperatures of 723-823 K and concentrations of the target species up to 4.0wt%. Redox reactions occurring during potential sweeps were observed. Concentration of BaCl2 in the salt did not seem to influence the diffusivity in the studied concentration range up to 4.0wt%. The presence of strontium in the system affected the redox reaction of lithium; however, there were no distinguishable redox peaks that could be measured. Impedance spectra obtained from EIS methods were used to calculate the exchange current densities of the electroactive active redox couple at the bismuth cathode. Results show the rate-controlling step in deposition to be the mass transport of Cs+ ions from the bulk salt to the cathode surface layer. Results from SEM-EDS suggest that Cs-Bi and Sr-Bi intermetallics from LiCl-KCl salt are not thermodynamically favorable.
In order to investigate the characteristics of the effects of various emission sources such as ships around the Busan North Port area, PM2.5 samples were analyzed by SEM/EDS (scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer). In the port city Busan, the main emission source of PM2.5 is ships, and soot was observed as the main exhaust particles of a ship diesel engine. As a result of the individual particle analysis of PM2.5 at the sampling site, carbonaceous particles such as soot and water droplet-shaped, which are considered to be exhausted from ships, were constantly observed. And some spherical Fe-rich particles also appeared.
The lacquer ware objects of Nangnang were treated for conservation and seven of them were studied on the manufacturing technic. When we examined them using microscopes and an SEM-EDS analysis, the lacquer layer was proved to consist of two parts: the ground and the upper lacquer. The ground coating was made of several mixed materials such as powdered bone and minerals. Many forms of powdered bone were observed. We could find out that HgS, PbO and AgS were used as pigments. We could also find out a specific process and materials were used for those objects, although we could not say definitely what they were because the number of the sample was not big enough.
