The effects of the surfactant type, i.e., CTAB(cationic), SDS(anionic), and GA(polymeric), on the stability of 0.1 vol.% $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids were investigated. The changes in size and zeta potential of nanoparticles in nanofluids with pH, surfactant concentration, and time were experimentally observed. The nanofluids adding CTAB, which ionizes of the same charge with the bare particle surface, was found to have the best stability regardless of the surfactant concentration, whereas those with SDS became unstable under low surfactant concentration conditions, i.e. lower than the critical micellel concentration(CMC), before the charge reversal occurred. With higher SDS concentration over CMC, they became stable. Gum Arabic, which had been used often to stabilize the nanofluids, was also tested. In result, it was found that the type and concentration of surfactants to add should be selected considering pH and the sign of the bare particle surface charge.
In the aqueous solutions the dephosphorylations of isopropyl phenyl-4-nitrophenyl phosphinate(IPNPIN) mediated by hydroxide$(OH^{\theta})$ and o-iodosobenzoate$(IB^{\theta})$ ions ate relatively slow, because of hydrophobicity of the substrate, and however it appears that $OH^{\theta}$ is inherently better nucleophile than $IB^{\theta}$, which is more soft ion. On the other hand, in cetyltrimetyiammonium bromide(CTABr) solutions which contain cationic micelles, the dephosphorylations of IPNPIN mediated by $OH^{\theta}$ or $IB^{\theta}$ ate very accelerated to 120 or 100,000 times as compared with those in the aqueous solutions. The values of pseudo first order rate constants reach a maximum with increasing. Such rate maxima are typical of micellar catalysed bimolecular reactions and the rise in rate constant followed by a gradual decrese is characteristic of reactions of hydrophobic substrates. In the cationic micellar solutions of CTABr, $IB^{\theta}$ accelerates the reactions much more than that $OH^{\theta}$ does. The reason seems that $IB^{\theta}$ which is more hydrophobic and soft ion than $OH^{\theta}$ is more easily moved into the Stern layer of the CTABr micelles than $OH^{\theta}$. In the anionic micellar solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS), the dephosrhorylations of IPNPIN ate slower than those in aqeous solutions. It means that $OH^{\theta}$ or $IB^{\theta}$ cannot easily move and approach to the Stern layer of the micelle in which almost all the hydrophobic substrate are located and which has a negative circumstance.
The solubilization of BTEX was evaluated in aqueous surfactant solutions with and without several additives. Anionic surfactant(Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate, SDS) and nonionic surfactants (NEODOL(equation omitted)25-3 and $SOFTANOL\circledR-90$ were used as test surfactants. The effects of surfactant HLB(Hydrophile-Lipophile Balance) Number and hydrocarbon molar volume and polarity of BTEX on the MSR(Molar Solubilization Ratio), micelle-water partition coefficient of BTEX, and CMC(C,itical Micelle Concentration) were investigated. Optimizing treatment conditions applicable to enhanced solubilization was also studied by manupulating salinity or electrolyte control with additives of ethyl alcohol, hydrotrope, and electrolyte solution. The most effective surfactant for solubilization was found $SOFTANOL\circledR-90$, since HLB number of 13.6 is similar to those values of BTEX ranging between 11.4 and 12.2, which was also proved experimentally. Ethyl alchohol of 3% was the most effective additives in reducing CMC and improving solubilization among the conditions using SDS, NEODOL(equation omitted)25-3, and $SOFTANOL\circledR-90$ with three additives. The partitioning of BTEX between surfactant micelles and aqueous solutions was characterized by a mole fraction micelle-phase/aqueous phase partion coefficient, $K_m$. Values of log $K_m$. for BTEX compounds in surfactant solutions of this study range from 2.95 to 3.76(100mM SDS) and 2.95 to 3.49(117mM $SOFTANOL\circledR-90$. Log $K_m$ appears to be a linear function of log $K_{ow}$ for SDS and $SOFTANOL\circledR-90$. A knowledge of partitioning of BTEX in aqueous surfactant system can be a prerequisite for the understanding of the behavior of hydrophobic organic compounds in soil-water systems in which surfactants play a role in remediation of contaminated soil and facilitated transport.

Astaxanthin (3,3'-dihydroxy-${\beta}$, ${\beta}$-carotene-4-4'-dione), a natural pigment of pink to red color, is widely distributed in nature particularly in the skin layer of salmonoids and the crust of shrimp, lobster, etc. Recently, it was produced from the yeast culture of Phaffia rhodozyma. Because of its high thermal stability and antioxidant functionality, its applications can be extended into food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical ingredient beyond the traditional feed additive. Because of its very high lipophilicity, astaxanthin has been extracted traditionally by strong organic solvents such as chloroform, petroleum ether, acetone, etc. In this study, we developed a surfactant-based solubillization system for astaxanthin, and used it to extract astaxanthin from disrupted yeast cells. Among Tween 20, Triton X-100 and SDS, Tween 20 was identified as the most suitable surfactant in terms of extraction capacity and safety. The ethylene oxide group of Tween 20 was identified as the most significant factor to increase the HLB value that determined the extraction capacity. The effects of micelle formation condition, such as the molar ratio of astaxanthin and Tween 20, pH, and ionic strength were also investigated. pH and ionic strength showed no significant effects. The optimal molar ratio between astaxanthin and Tween 20 was 1 : 12. Antioxidant activity of astaxanthin was higher than ${\beta}$-carotene and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol. Astaxanthin in the crude extract from the yeast cell was more resistant to air and/or light degradation than pure astaxanthin, probably because of the presence of other carotenoids and lipids.
In this study, sodium dedocyl sulfate (SDS), which was anionic surfactant, was added for forming micelles to remove ferrous ions that could be contained with a small amount in industrial water. Then aggregates were formed by adsorption or binding of ferrous ions on the surface of micelles, and then rejected by ceramic membranes to remove ferrous ions. Ferrous concentration was fixed at 1mM and SDS was changed as $0{\sim}10mM$ to investigate the effect of the anionic surfactant. As a result, rejection rate of ferrous was the highest to 88.97% at 6mM. And we used ELS (Electrophoretic Light Scattering Spectrometer) to investigate particle size distribution of micellar aggregates depending on SDS concentration. Then distribution of large aggregates was the highest at 6mM. And we investigated effects of $N_2$-back-flushing time (BT) during periodic $N_2$-back-flushing on ceramic membranes. Finally optimal $N_2$-BT for NCMT-723l (pore size $0.10{\mu}m$) membrane was 20 sec.

Reductive dechlorination of endosulfans was studied with zero valent metals (ZVMs) and bimetals in aqueous batch reactors. The effect of surfactants was evaluated. Endosulfan was successfully dechlorinated with zero valent iron. However, a bimetal, palladium coated iron (Pd/Fe) showed a highly enhanced reactivity for both endosulfan I and II indicating palladium act as a dechlorination catalyst on the iron. The effect of surfactants on degradation with ZVM has been very controvertible. Variable concentration of a nonionic surfactant, Triton X-100 and an anionic surfactant, SDS were added into the reactor with ZVM. The reaction rates of endosulfan were increased with both surfactants. In the case of Triton X-100, the reaction rate was increased with the increasing surfactant concentration up to 400 mg/L. Addition of small amount of surfactant under the CMC, the reaction rate was increased. However, the enhancing effect was diminished when a higher concentration of surfactant (1,000 mg/L) was used. Current study implicate that the surfactant adsorbed on the metal surface might increase the surface concentration of endosulfan resulting in the increased reaction rate. However, partitioning of endosulfan into the micelle formed at the high concentration of surfactant diminish the enhancing effect by reducing the contact chance between target compound and the metal surface.

Surface active properties of these aqueous Gemini surfactant solutions including surface tension, critical micelle concentration(cmc), foaming power, foam stability, emulsifying power and Krafft point were measured at given conditions. They showed excellent properties, being compared with conventional single-chain surfactants such as sodium dodecyl sulfonate(SDS). Their surface tensions in the aqueous solutions were decreased to $30{\sim}38$ mN/m, which is lower than 39 mN/m of SDS, and their cmc values evaluated by surface tension method were $2.8{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}3.3{\times}10^{-4}$ mol/L. These values were also much lower than that of SDS, $9.8{\times}10^{-3}$ mol/L. The foaming power and foam stability, especially decyl and dodecyl compounds, were good and the emulsifying power in benzene or soybean oil was also excellent. All of the synthesized Gemini surfactants possessed good water solubility and their Krafft points were all below $0^{\circ}C$. As results, DDED and DDOD, Gemini surfactants which were synthesized are expected to be applied as foamers, emulsifiers and so on.
Highly ordered mesoporous manganese oxide films were electrodeposited onto indium tin oxide coated (ITO) glass using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and ethylene glycol (EG) which were used as a templating agent and stabilizer for the formation of micelle, respectively. The manganese oxide films synthesized with surfactant templating exhibited a highly mesoporous structure with a long-range order, which was confirmed by SAXRD and TEM analysis. The unique porous structure offers a more favorable diffusion pathway for electrolyte transportation and excellent ionic conductivity. Among the synthesized samples, Mn2O3-SDS+EG exhibited the best electrochemical performance for a supercapacitor in the wide range of scan rate, which was attributed to the well-developed mesoporous structure. The Mn2O3 prepared with SDS and EG displayed an outstanding capacitance of 72.04 F g-1, which outperform non-porous Mn2O3 (32.13 F g-1) at a scan rate of 10 mV s-1.

Bioremediation efforts often rely on the application of surfactants to enhance hydrocarbon bioavailability. However, synthetic surfactants can sometimes be toxic to degrading microorganisms, thus reducing the clearance rate of the pollutant. Therefore, surfactant-resistant bacteria can be an important tool for bioremediation efforts of hydrophobic pollutants, circumventing the toxicity of synthetic surfactants that often delay microbial bioremediation of these contaminants. In this study, we screened a natural surfactant-rich compartment, the estuarine surface microlayer (SML), for cultivable surfactant-resistant bacteria using selective cultures of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Resistance to surfactants was evaluated by colony counts in solid media amended with critical micelle concentrations (CMC) of either surfactants, in comparison with non-amended controls. Selective cultures for surfactant-resistant bacteria were prepared in mineral medium also containing CMC concentrations of either CTAB or SDS. The surfactantresistant isolates obtained were tested by PCR for the Pseudomonas genus marker gacA gene and for the naphthalene-dioxygenase-encoding gene ndo. Isolates were also screened for biosurfactant production by the atomized oil assay. A high proportion of culturable bacterioneuston was tolerant to CMC concentrations of SDS or CTAB. The gacA-targeted PCR revealed that 64% of the isolates were Pseudomonads. Biosurfactant production in solid medium was detected in 9.4% of tested isolates, all affiliated with genus Pseudomonas. This study shows that the SML is a potential source of surfactant-resistant and biosurfactant-producing bacteria in which Pseudomonads emerge as a relevant group.

In the reversed-phase ion-pair high performance liquid chromatographic (RPIP-HPLC) elution behavior of noble metal-thiacrown ether complexes, the effects of the concentration of ion-pairing reagent and kind of ligands were studied. It was found that the less the number of atoms in the ring of the thiacrown ether molecule was, the larger the selectivity was, and the elution mechanism of the complexes was explained due to the formation of ion-pair when the concentration of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in mobile phase was lower than 10 mM and due to the formation of micelle when the SDS concentration was higher than 10 mM. As a conclusion, separations of the noble metal-thiacrown ether complexes in an optimum separation condition were accomplished successfully and the method was proved to be an useful one for the separation and determination of Ag (Ⅰ) ion in a black-white photographic fixing solution.
