  • The aim of this study was to develope a fishing technology for fisheries management for improving the survival rate of young fishes escaped from trawl net. Sea experiments were carried out to investigate the survival rate of the fishes in off Geomun island and Korean southern sea. Cover-net fish cage was designed and manufactured to collect fishes escaped from COD(codend) and TED(trawl escapement device). Fish cage was installed in a shallow site where scuba diver can observe the surviving fishes after separating the cage from trawl net. Most of fishes except horse mackerel(Trachurus japonicus) and mackerel(Scomber japonicus) could escaped through TED(bar space 35mm) easier than COD(mesh size 54mm). Especially, escapement rate of redlip croaker(Pseudosciaena polyactis) escaped from TED was the highest as 73.9%. Survival rate of horse mackerel(Trachurus japonicus) escaped from TED was 85.5% at the point of 96 hours over, while the survival rate for COD showed a rapid decrease according to the time elapse as 85.0% at the point of 24 hours, 76.4% for 48 hours, 62.7% for 72 hours and 56.1% for 96 hours. Over 90% of red seabream(Pagrus major) and rock bream(Oplegnathus fasciatus) escaped from TED were survived 96 hours over and the survival rate of those fishes were excellent compared with the other fish species. All korean pomfret(Pampus echinogaster) escaped from both COD and TED were died within 48 hours. Most of redlip croaker(Pseudosciaena polyactis) were also died within 12 hours because of the weak physiological characteristics by water pressure change. Survival rate of fishes like as horse mackerel(Trachurus japonicus) having hard skin was high while it was low for the fishes like as squid(Todarodes pacificus) and hair-tail(Trichiurus lepturus) having soft skin. We could know that there were big differences in the survival rate offish species escaped from trawl net.

  • The sand dollar, Astriclypeus manni is commonly encountered on a subtidal sand bottom along the coast of Cheju Island. limited information has been reported on their ecology despite their natural abundance. This study reports ecology and an annual reproductive cycle of the sand dollars present at Hamdock, northern coast of Cheju Island. A. manni collected from Hamdock revealed that they are 80 to 200 mm in test diameter. Sediment Brain size analysis indicated that A. manni mostly occurs on medium (particle diameter of 500 $\mu$m) to very find sand (particle diameter of 125 $\mu$m), particularly on fine sand (particle diameter of 250 $\mu$m). Internal morphology and in situ observations on their feeding habit indicated that A. manni is a deposit feeder, feeding on organic debris contained in the sediment around its habitat. A. manni were more frequently observed near Zostrea marina bed where content of organic matter in the sediment is considered to be higher. Gonadal tissues of the male were yellow in color while female gonads appeared to be purple. Fully mature eggs, with a mean diameter of 381 $\mu$m, and sperm were observed from the histological slides of the sand dollars collected in late July to August, suggesting that A. manni spawn during July to August when water temperature reaches 20 to $25^{\circ}C$.

  • Two new marine sponges of family Tedaniidae, Tedania (Tedon iu) songakensis n. sp. and Tedania (Tedonia) sasuensis n. sp. were collected from Jeju Island and Chuja Island, Korea between 2004 and 2005. T. (T.) songakensis n. sp. is similar to T (T.) purpurescen Bergquist and Fromont, 1988 based on its type of spicules, but is distinguished from growth form and size of small onychaetes. The growth form of this species is massive, and is compared with thin encrusting of Tedania (T.) purpurescen. The onychaetes of the new species is twice as long as that of T. (T.) purpurescen. T. (T.) sasuensis n. sp. is closely related to T. (T.) connectens (Bronsted, 1924) in type of spicules. However, it is different in size of onychaetes and growth form. The large onychaetes of new species is larger than that of T (T.) connectens. The small onychaetes of new species is smaller than that of T. (T.) connectens. The growth form is massive in new species, but thick encrustins in T.(T.) connectens. And T. (T.) songakensis n. sp. is similar to T. (T.) sasuensis n. sp. in growth form. However, the former is widely different from the latter in shape, color and size of all spicules.

  • Species composition and distribution characteristics of fish were determined by monthly underwater visual census from September. 2013 to August, 2014 at Yeongunri off Tongyeong, Korea. The study area was divided into five habitat types by depth and substrate: (1) sand bottom as depth of 0~2 m, (2) seagrass bed of 2~5 m, (3) rocky outcrop of 0~2 m, (4) rocky bottom of 2~5 m, (5) sandy mud bottom of 5~8 m. A total of 1,673 individuals belonging to 43 species in 26 families were recorded during the study period. The number of species tended to decrease after October, 2013 and increase from March, 2014 showing the highest number in October (autumn), and lowest in January (winter). In terms of the number of species, Gobiidae was the most dominant family (7 species), followed by Scorpaenidae (4 species). Embiotocidae was the most abundant (26.1% in total number of individuals), followed by Scorpaenidae (19.9%) and Gobiidae (19.3%). The dominant species were Sebastes inermis (19.2%), Ditrema temminckii (13.1%), and Neoditrema ransonnetii (12.9%). The number of species and abundance were relatively high at the depth between 2 and 5 m on seagrass bed and rocky bottom, whereas they were lower at the depth between 0 and 2 m on the sand bottom, suggesting that seagrass beds and rocky bottoms provided the diverse habitats for various fish species in this sea.

  • Seasonal variations of settling particles and metal fluxes were monitored at a nearshore site of Marian Cove, King Geroge Island, Antarctica from 28th February 1998 to 22nd January 2000. Near-bottom sediment traps were deployed at 30m water depth of the cove, and sampling bottles were recovered every month by SCUBA divers. Total particulate flux and metal concentrations were determined from the samples. Total particulate flux showed a distinct seasonality, high in austral summer and low in austral winter: the highest flux $(21.97g\;m^{-2}d^{-1})$ was found in February of 1999, and the lowest $(2.47g\;m^{-2}d^{-1})$ in September of 1998, when sea surface was frozen completely. Lithogenic particle flux accounted for 90% of the total flux, and showed a significantly negative correlation with the thickness of snow accumulation around the study site. It was suggested that the most of the lithogenic particles trapped in the bottles was transported by melt water stream from the surrounding land. Fluxes of Al, Fe, Ti, Mn, Zn, Cii, Co, Ni, Cr, Cd, and Pb showed similar seasonal variations with the total flux, and their averaged fluxes were 34000, 9000,960, 180, 13.8, 17.6, 3.0,2.1, 5.4, 0.02, and $1.5nmol\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$ respectively. Among the metals, Cu and Cd showed the most noticeable seasonal patterns. The Cd flux correlated positively with the fluxes of biogenic components while the Cu flux correlated with both the lithogenic and biogenic particle fluxes. The Cu flux peak in the late summer is likely related to a substantial amount of inflow of ice melt water laden with Cu-enriched lithogenic particles. On the other hands, the Cd flux peak in the early spring may be associated with the unusually early occurred phytoplankton bloom.

  • Various artificial reefs provide the fish habitat and nursery, and contribute the improvement of fisheries productivity. The evaluation methods of fishery resources in the artificial reefs have been done by fishing, scuba diving, underwater camera, and scientific echo sounder/sonar. There are a number of studies using echosounders on the quantitative and qualitative evaluations of artificial reefs in various seas around the world. This study focused on the spatial distribution of fishes around artificial reefs and the influential area of reefs off Bukchon, Jeju Island. Not only acoustic data but also various properties of artificial reefs were used in the geographic information system to extract relevant results. As a result, the major material of reefs on this study site was concrete and the number of reefs with that material was the most. The volume of reefs consisted of steel only and steel with riprap was considerably large compared to other reefs. The average NASC in the vertical distribution of fishes in artificial reefs was $31.6m^2/nm^2$ in April, and that was $61.3m^2/nm^2$ in June. The distance between the fish school and their nearest reef in June morning had a wide range from 750 to 3250 m. On the basis of the influence ray of artificial reefs, it had a tendancy of NASC to decrease with distance from the reef in the June morning. It is a preliminary study to present the geospatial analysis example to understand a better way of comprehensive artificial reef environments.

  • The purpose of this study was to clarify the casual effects among participants'curiosity, the perceived exertion and the exercise emotion on the exercise adherence behavior in marine leisure sports. The subjects for the study was 491 students who registered for the curriculum on marine leisure sports(SCUBA diving, Windsurfing, Yacht). They answered to 4 kinds of questionnaires. The descriptive analysis and the reliability analysis were accomplished through SPSS 18.0. The correlation analysis and the confirmatory factor analysis were conducted for verifying the validity of the research model with AMOS 18.0. The verification for the structure equation modeling was conducted to investigate the casual relationship among factors. The results was as follows. First, there was the causality between the participants'curiosity on the marine leisure sports and the exercise emotion, the emotion and the exercise adherence behavior, the curiosity and the behavior. Also, the exercise emotion was the partial mediating variable of the causality between the curiosity and the exercise adherence behavior. Seconds, when the exercise intensity was heavy, the rate of the positive emotion was low and the opposite was high. When the exercise intensity was heavy, the probability, predisposing and reinforcing were low. A strong will for doing exercise showed in case the exercise emotion was positive with high probability, predisposing and reinforcing. The exercise emotion was the partial mediating variable of the causality between the perceived exertion and the exercise adherence behavior.

  • To examine distribution of the Zostera species growing naturally in Ulleungdo, scuba diving surveys using ships were conducted along the coast and inside the harbors of the island at the end of September 2019. In areas of seagrass occurrence, environmental factors such as nutrient concentrations in water column and sediment pore water, salinity, and sediment organic content were also analyzed. Zostera caulescens meadows appeared in the relatively deep waters (14-24 m MSL) of Cheonbu-ri, Jeodong-ri, Sadong-ri, and Namyang-ri in Ulleungdo, and the total seagrass coverage was approximately 4.9 ha. Approximately 0.9 ha of Zostera marina meadow was found at the depths of 3-5 m MSL within Hyeonpo-hang in Hyeonpo-ri. The average shoot density and biomass of Z. caulescens were 121.9±9.7 shoot m-2 and 99.0±13.2 gDW m-2, respectively, with no significant differences by location. The average shoot density and biomass of Z. marina were 193.8±18.8 shoot m-2 and 102.6±6.8 gDW m-2, respectively. The nutrient concentrations in the sediment pore water and sediment organic content in the seagrass meadows in Ulleungdo were lower than those in eelgrass meadows on the southern and eastern coasts of Korea. These results will provide useful basic information for the marine protected species, Z. caulescens and Z. marina, and for the conservation of the waters of Ulleungdo, which has been designated as a marine protected area.

  • Mortality and growth rate of the soft coral, Dendronephthya gigantea, from Jejudo Island on the southern coast of Korea were investigated from February 2003 to October 2004 using SCUBA diving. 48 individuals with variable sizes of D. gigantea of the depth of 15m were tagged with flagging tapes and plastic films, and then monitored with two month intervals. The average mortality of two-month term for the study period was 50.4%, with the peak of 84.6% during the summer storms in August - October 2003. About the size class mortality, individuals of size class I(${\leq}$10 cm) showed the highest mortality, followed by size class III(>20 cm) and size class II(10 cm-20 cm). Growth rate did not show a seasonal pattern. For growth in length, individuals of D. gigantea grew about 3cm in average for two-month period, with a maximum growth of 6.4 cm which occurred in August - October 2003. For growth in diameter, individuals grew about 0.3 cm for 2 month term, with a maximum of 1.4cm in April - June 2004. Individuals of size class I usually grew faster than those of larger size classes. D. gigantea population in Jejudo Island was strongly affected by summer storms, which was due to annual event of summer typhoon. Never the less, it appears that the local population can be maintained by fast growth of the juvenile stage and active recruitment to compensate the high mortality caused by the summer disturbance.
