  • In this paper, an efficient Wireless Access in Vehicular Environment (WAVE) packet transmission scheme for railroad communication is proposed. WAVE communication is a wireless local area network (WLAN) based communication and it is developed to be suitable for vehicular communication. There has been a lot of study on WAVE's applicability to Intelligent Transport System (ITS). As one of main transportation methods, by using WAVE, quality of railroad communication including WLAN based Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) can be enhanced and variety of railroad communication systems can be integrated into WAVE. However, there are technical challenges to adopt WAVE in railroad communications. For the simplest single-PHY WAVE, time division alternation of 50ms between Control Channel (CCH) and Service Channel (SCH) is required. Since there are delay sensitive railroad traffic types, alternation operation of CCH and SCH may cause performance degradation. In this paper, after identifying a couple of problems based on detailed analysis, a novel packet transmission scheme under railroad environment is proposed. In order to verify if the proposed scheme meets the requirement of railroad communication, WAVE transmission is mathematically modeled.

  • This study, based on the research on the history of life, aimed to recompose and analyze into what life progressive structure the life experience by the mentally ill, after the onslaught of the disease, developed in a bid to understand the risk progress in the mentally ill's life, and to determine what contributed to the current stabilized recovery and adjustment. Five mentally ill persons participated in the study, and Sch$\ddot{u}$tze's narrative interview was used to gather data. The gathered data were analyzed according to Sch$\ddot{u}$tze's process structure of life. The interviewees' life experiences were chronologically organized as understood, and significant stories were recomposed that not only brought about changes but also helped overcome their disabilities in the process of treatment and rehabilitation after the onslaught of the disease. As a result, their experiences were recomposed into the stage of onslaught of the mental illness and confusion, and into the stage of intensive treatment and rehabilitation. The former was categorized into suppression by the disease, repetition and endurance of the painful life, and separation from their family and frustration. The latter was categorized into the rediscovery of self through social role change, others who helped realize the life potential, the expansion of mental health services in the community, obstacle to the integration of communities, re-integration of family relationships, re-analysis of experience of the disease through the examination of the life prior to onslaught of the disease, and expectation for the future. Also, these themes were comparatively examined so as to examine the crisis progress in the mentally ill's life after the onslaught of the disease, as well as the life transfer process through positive rehabilitation. Lastly, on the basis of these results, important areas of mental health services for the mentally ill were discussed.

  • In this paper, a new equivalent circuit model for quantum-well laser diode (LD) is proposed. The model includes carrier transport effects in the SCH region, and rprovides, in a stable and accurate manner, large-and small-signal responses of laser diode output power as function of injected currents. SPICE simulation was performed using the circuit model and results are presented for L-I characteristics, pulse and frequency responses under various conditions. It is expencted that the new equaivalent circuit model will find useful applications for designing and analyzing OEIC, LD driver circuits, and LD packaging.

  • A method in order to restore the body movement by means of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) was considered. Multichannel EMG signals from a normal subject during the rolling-over motion were measured and analyzed. The results of the experiment indicated the synergetic role of the muscles during the desired motion.

  • According to the rapid growth of transmission power, fault current level approaches to the maximum capacity of circuit breaker. This paper has been proposed a superconducting current limiter (SCL) to reduce the fault current to appropriate level. Superconductor for SCL has been examined and design criterion of each triggering method has been shown. Superconducting current limiter was fabricated using thin film and switching characteristics were shown, where thermal and current triggering were adopted.

  • Anthracnose of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) was found in the peanut cultivating fields in Iksan, Korea in September 1997. Infected plants showed irregularly circular water soaking brown lesions. In the severe case, leaves and stems were entirely died. The causal fungus of anthracnose isolated from the diseased plants was identified as Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Penz. and its teleomorph was Glomerella cingulata (Stonem.) Spauld. & Sch. according to the criteria based on the cultural and morphological characteristics. By arificial inoculation with fungal spores on healthy peanut, anthracnose symptom was observed 15 days after inoculation.

  • Alamouti proposes a two branch transmit diver-sity scheme that provides the same diversity order as maximal ratio combining at the receiver. It has many advantages of no bandwidth expansion, not requiring channel information at the transmitter and simple maximum likelihood decoding at the receiver. Papadias and Foschini extend this sch-eme to four transmit antennas and suggest several schemes to decrease the interference component and allow the attainment of the open-loop capacity. This paper shows the performance of ZF and MM-SE schemes comparing with ideal case on 4xl sy-stem over BER and 10% outage capacity.

  • tIn brain ischemic insult, inflammatory cells such as macrophages and lymphocytes are chemo-attracted into the brain lesion and release cytokines, resulting in an activation of microglia that are functionally equivalent to peripheral macrophages in the central nervous system. In cerebral ischemic insults, activated inflammatory cells such as microglia and macrophages may be implicated in the pattern and degree of ischemic injury by producing various bioactive mediators.
