  • The tilt rotor aircraft has the flight characteristics which takes off vertically like a helicopter and flies forward like an airplane. Especially, the transition process from a helicopter to an airplane mode requires not only the mixing of control inputs but also the stability and controllability augmentation system(SCAS) in order to keep the safe flight because there are compound flight dynamic characteristics of a helicopter and an airplane including non-linearity, uncertainty. This paper describes the design of SCAS in a lateral motion for the tilt rotor aircraft based on the $H_{\infty}$ control method, which was performed from mathematical model with weighting matrix based on the relationship between the $H_{\infty}$ norm and the sensitivity function. Through simulation analysis for the controller designed on the $H_{\infty}$ control theory, it was shown that this method may be applied to the control design of the tilt rotor aircraft.

  • This paper presents the design and evaluation of a tiltrotor attitude controller. The implemented response type of the command augumentation system is Attitude Command Attitude Hold. The controller architecture can alleviate the need for extensive gain scheduling and thus has the potential to reduce development time. The control algorithm is constructed using the feedback linearization technique. And an on-line adaptive architecture that employs a neural network compensating the model inversion error caused by the deficiency of full knowledge tiltrotor aircraft dynamics is applied to augment the attitude control system. The use of Lyapunov stability analysis guarantees boundedness of the tracking error and network parameters. The performance of the controller is evaluated against ADS-33E criteria, using the nonlinear tiltrotor simulation code for Bell TR301 developed by KARI. (Korea Aerospace Research Institute)

  • Noninvasive prenatal test (NIPT) is a novel screening method for the diagnosis of fetal chromosomal aneuploidies. NIPT is based on technology that detects cell-free fetal DNA in maternal plasma and analyzes it with massively parallel sequencing technology to determine whether the fetus is at risk of trisomy 21, trisomy 18, trisomy 13 or sex chromosome abnormalities (SCAs). NIPT has been reported to have sensitivity of 99% and a false positive rate of less than 1% for detecting trisomy 21 and trisomy 18. Although extension of the application of NIPT to other SCAs has been attempted, there are concerns in extending NIPT to SCAs because of maternal or fetal mosaicism, undetected maternal SCAs, and multiple pregnancies. Recently, we assessed a pregnancy with the rare Turner syndrome mosaicism 45, X/47, XXX, which was reported as 45, X with NIPT. We present the case here and briefly review the current literatures on NIPT in testing for fetal monosomy X. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the 45, X/47, XXX mosaicism in Korea to be reported as 45, X by NIPT with whole genome sequencing. This case report will provide valuable information for counseling women who want to undergo NIPT.

  • The flight controller should meet the flying qualities, stability margins, and time response requirement according to the class of a target aircraft or UAV. Classical design process of PID controller is a very time consuming process and needed trial and erros. The best way is to apply the multi-disciplinary optimization algorithm to meet the numerous constraints of controller requirements. This paper presents how multi-objective parameter optimization (CONDUIT) can be used to determine many design parameters of lateral stability and augmentation system for roll and heading controller of the small UAV. To verify the effectiveness of applying the optimization method, designed controller using optimization are compared with the baseline controller that is designed only considering the time responses.

  • The autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) are a group of neurodegenerative diseases, clinically and genetically heterogeneous, characterized by degeneration of spinocerebellar pathways with variable involvement of other neural systems. At present, 27 distinct genetic forms of SCAs are known: SCA1-8, SCA10-21, SCA23, SCA25-28, DRPLA (dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy), and 16q-liked ADCA (autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia). Epidemiological data about the prevalence of SCAs are restricted to a few studies of isolated geographical regions, and most do not reflect the real occurrence of the disease. In general a prevalence of about 0.3-2 cases per 100,000 people is assumed. As SCA are highly heterogeneous, the prevalence of specific subtypes varies between different ethnic and continental populations. Most recent data suggest that SCA3 is the commonest subtype worldwide; SCA1, SCA2, SCA6, SCA7, and SCA8 have a prevalence of over 2%, and the remaining SCAs are thought to be rare (prevalence <1%). In this review, we highlight and discuss the SCA7. The hallmark of SCA7 is the association of hereditary ataxia and visual loss caused by pigmentary macular degeneration. Visual failure is progressive, bilateral and symmetrical, and leads irreversibly to blindness. This association represents a distinct disease entity classified as autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia (ADCA) type II by Harding. The disease affectsprimarily the cerebellum and the retina by the moderate to severe neuronal loss and gliosis, but also many other central nervous system structures as the disease progresses. SCA7 is caused by expansion of an unstable trinucleotide CAG repeat in the ATXN7 gene encoding a polyglutamine (polyQ) tract in the corresponding protein, ataxin-7. Normal ATXN7 alleles contain 4-35 CAG repeats, whereas pathological alleles contain from 36->450 CAG repeats. Immunoblott analysis demonstrated that ataxin-7 is widely expressed but that expression levels vary among tissues. Instability of expanded repeats is more pronounced in SCA7 than in other SCA subtypes and can cause substantial lowering of age at onset in successive generations termed ‘anticipation’ so that children may become diseased even before their parents develop symptoms. The strong anticipation in SCA7 and the rarity of contractions should have led to its extinction within a few generations. There is no specific drug therapy for this neurodegenerative disorder. Currently, therapy remains purely symptomatic. Cellular models and SCA7 transgenic mice have been generated which constitute valuable resources for studying the disease mechanism. Understanding the pathogenetic mechanisms of neurodegeneration in SCAs should lead to the identification of potential therapeutic targets and ultimately facilitate drug discovery. Here we summarize the clinical, pathological, and genetic aspects of SCA7, and review the current understanding of the pathogenesis of this disorder. Further, we also review the potential therapeutic strategies that are currently being explored in polyglutamine diseases.

  • Although numerous studies have analyzed the relationship between subway travel demand (STD) and various characteristics of subway catchment area (SCA), a few studies examined the relationship between STD and the structure of pedestrian networks within each SCA. Hence, this study evaluates the structure of pedestrian networks within 79 SCAs in the city of Busan using Space syntax and investigates the relationship between STD and several characteristics of SCA including the spatial structure of pedestrian network. The analysis results show that the spatial integration of pedestrian networks within the SCAs, which represents the magnitudes of walking accessibility to subway station, is positively associated with STD among the three spatial indexes such as integration, connectivity, and intelligibility. In addition, the results show that STD significantly increases as the number of travel gathering facilities and the average floor area ratio within the SCAs increase. This study ultimately corroborates that designing the grid pedestrian network and assigning the travel gathering facilities to the compact buildings within SCAs are needed to ameliorate the spatial structure of SCA in the city of Busan as transit-oriented development system.

  • Mankind has been using ships for more than 5,000 years and has developed a range of related technologies. However, despite such a long history, compared to aircraft with a history of approximately one century, the pace of progress has been markedly slow. Even though technological progress of ships or the installation of various navigation equipment have been achieved, seaborne collisions have occurred quite frequently. This study analyzed the TCAS( Traffic Collision Avoidance System) that has contributed to the prevention of collisions with other transport methods including aircraft to suggest a collision avoidance system that can be deployed for ships. To apply the technologies applied to aircraft that move in 3D to ships that move in 2D, the difference in the operational environment between the two modes was analyzed to identify elements that need to be applied to ships. The suggested display of data on the collision prevention system is one that manipulates the augmented reality display device used in automobiles that over the past few years has undergone rapid development. Based on the presentation of technological elements that need to be considered when adopting the SCAS or the Seaborne Collision Avoidance System as suggested in this study, the authors hope to contribute to the prevention of collisions.
