Predictors of Mortality in Patients with COVID-19: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (코로나바이러스감염증-19 (COVID-19) 환자들의 사망관련 인자에 대한 연구: 체계적 문헌고찰 및 메타분석)

  • Background: Most meta-analyses of risk factors for severe or critical outcomes in patients with COVID-19 only included studies conducted in China and this causes difficulties in generalization. Therefore, this study aimed to systematically evaluate the risk factors in patients with COVID-19 from various countries. Methods: PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched for studies published on the mortality risk in patients with COVID-19 from January 1 to May 7, 2020. Pooled estimates were calculated as odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) using the random-effects model. Results: We analyzed data from seven studies involving 26,542 patients in total in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Among the patients, 2,337 deaths were recorded (8.8%). Elderly patients and males showed significantly higher mortality rates than young patients and females; the OR values were 3.6 (95% CI 2.5-5.1) and 1.2 (95% CI 1.0-1.3), respectively. Among comorbidities, hypertension (OR 2.3, 95% CI 1.1-4.6), diabetes (OR 2.2, 95% CI 1.2-3.9), cardiovascular disease (OR 3.1, 95% CI 1.5-6.3), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (OR 4.4, 95% CI 1.7-11.5), and chronic kidney disease (OR 4.2, 95% CI 2.0-8.6) were significantly associated with increased mortalities. Conclusion: This meta-analysis, involving a huge global sample, employed a systematic method for synthesizing quantitative results of studies on the risk factors for mortality in patients with COVID-19. It is helpful for clinicians to identify patients with poor prognosis and improve the allocation of health resources to patients who need them most.

Changes in consumer perception of fashion products in a pandemic - Effects of COVID-19 spead - (팬데믹 상황에서의 패션제품에 대한 소비자의 인식 변화 분석 - 코로나19 확산의 영향 -)

  • This study aimed at examining fashion consumers' awareness during the COVID-19 pandemic. Big data analysis methods, such as text mining, social network analysis, and regression analysis, were applied to user posts about fashion on Korean portal websites and social media during COVID-19. R 3.4.4, UCINET 6, and SPSS 25.0 software were used to analyze the data. The results were as follows. In researching the popular fashion-related topics during COVID-19, the prevention of infection and prophylaxis were significant concerns in the early stage (Jan 1 to Jan 31, 2020), and changed to online channels and online fashion platforms. Then, various topics and fashion keywords appeared with COVID-19-related keywords afterwards. Fashion-related subjects concerned prophylaxis, home life, digital and beauty products, online channels, and fashion consumption. In comparing fashion consumers' awareness during COVID-19 with SARS and MERS, "face masks" was the common keyword for all three illnesses; yet, the prevention of infection was a major consumer concern in fashion-related subjects during COVD-19 only. As COVD-19 cases increased, the search volume for face masks, shoes, and home clothes also increased. Consumer awareness about face masks shifted from blocking yellow dust and micro-dust to the sociocultural significance and short supply. Keywords related to performance turned out to be the major awareness as to shoes, and home clothes were repurposed with an expanded range of use.

The Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Stock Markets: An Empirical Analysis of World Major Stock Indices

  • This study aims to investigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the stock markets of sixteen countries. Pooled OLS regression, conventional t-test and Mann-Whitney test are used to estimate the results of the study. We construct a weekly panel data of COVID-19 new cases and stock returns. Pooled OLS estimation result shows that the growth rate of weekly new cases of COVID-19 negatively predicts the return in stock market. Next, the returns on leading stock indices of these countries during the COVID-19 outbreak period are compared with returns during the non-COVID period. We use a t-test and Mann-Whitney test to compare the returns. The results reveal that investors in these countries do not react to the media news of COVID-19 at the early stage of the pandemic. However, once the human-to-human transmissibility had been confirmed, all of the stock market indices negatively reacted to the news in the short- and long-event window. Interestingly, we noticed that the Shanghai Composite Index, which was severely affected during the short-event window, bounced back during the long-event window. This indicates that the Chinese government's drastic measures to contain the spread of the pandemic regained the confidence of investors in the Shanghai Stock Market.

  • The Korean Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued the guidelines about coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) for children and adolescents. Case definitions and management of COVID-19 in neonates, infants, children and adolescents are presented in this guideline. In addition, guidelines for caregiver management are also provided. In this review, we introduce the contents of the current guidelines for COVID-19 in children and adolescents in Korea.

A Study on the Air Travel Demand Forecasting using ARIMA-Intervention Model (Event Intervention이 일본, 중국 항공수요에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to anticipate the air travel demands over the period of 164 months, from January 1997 to August 2010 using ARIMA-Intervention modeling on the selected sample data. The sample data is composed of the number of the passengers who in the domestic route for Jeju route. In the analysis work of this study, the past events which are assumed to have affected the demands for the air travel routes to Jeju in different periods were used as the intervention variables. The impacts of such variables were reflected in the presupposed demand. The intervention variables used in this study are, respectively, the World Cup event in 2002 (from May to June), 2003 SARS outbreak (from April to May), Tsunami in January 2005, and the influenza outbreak from October to December 2009. The result of the above mentioned analysis revealed that the negative intervention events, like a global outbreak of an epidemic did have negative impact on the air travel demands in a risk aversion by the users of the aviation services. However, in case of the negative intervention events in limited area, where there are possible substituting destinations for the tourists, the impact was positive in terms of the air travel demands for substituting destinations due to the rational expectation of the users as they searched for other options. Also in this study, it was discovered that there is not a binding correlation between a nation wide mega-event, such as the World Cup games in 2002, and the increased air travel demands over a short-term period.

HQSAR Analyses on the Tyrosinase Inhibitory Activity of Phenyl-2,2'-methylenebis(cyclohexane-1,3-dione) Analogues (Phenyl-2,2'-methylenebis(cyclohexane-1,3-dione) 유도체의 Tyrosinase 저해활성에 관한 HQSAR 분석)

  • The structure-activity relationships (SARs) between a series of phenyl-2,2'-methylenebis(cyclohexane-1,3-dione) analogues (1-22) as substrate molecules and their inhibitory activity against tyrosinase were studied quantitatively using molecular hologram quantitative structure-activity relationships (HQSARs). Based on the results, new compounds with the increased tyrosinase inhibitory activity were designed. In addition, statistically favored E-2 model ($q_2$ = 0.564 & $r_2$ = 0.929) was derived. It is predicted that the activity of the most potent one (P1) of compounds newly designed by the optimized HQSAR E-2 model was $Pred.pI_{50}$ = 5.48 and the predicted inhibitory activity was about 13.4 fold higher than that of the kojic acid used as standard compound.

  • In this paper, a rectangular-cavity-type exposure system for in vitro experiments has been developed fur the biological effect studies of radio frequency fields from handhold wireless telephones. It ia fed with a ${\lambda}_g/8$ monopole antennas at the ${\lambda}_g/4$ position of the top plate in order to excite fundamental $TE_{102}$ mode and it allows the uniform exposure of one 8.5 cm(inner diameter) petri dish. SARs inside the exposed medium have been characterized by numerical simulations, using the FDTD method and by experimental dosimetry with fiberoptic temperature probes (model 790, Luxtron Corp.).

  • Theoretical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) were performed to study the substituent effect on the geometric and electronic structures as well as the biological behavior of technetium-99m-labeled diphosphonate complexes. Optimized structures of these complexes are surrounded by six ligands in an octahedral environment with three unpaired 4d electrons ($d^3$ state) and the optimized geometry of $^{99m}Tc$-MDP agrees with experimental data. With the increase of electron-donating substituent or tether between phosphate groups, the energy gap between frontier orbitals increases and the probability of non-radiative deactivation via d-d electron transfer decreases. The charge distribution reflects a significant ligand-to-metal electron donation. Based on the calculated geometric and electronic structures and biologic properties of $^{99m}Tc$-diphosphonate complexes, several structure-activity relationships (SARs) were established. These results may be instructive for the design and synthesis of novel $^{99m}Tc$-diphosphonate bone imaging agent and other $^{99m}Tc$-based radiopharmaceuticals.

Analysis of SAR on Human Head Caused by Antenna of PCS Handheld Telephone (PCS 전화기의 안테나에 의해 인체 두부에 유기되는 SAR 분석)

  • In this paper, the detection of 1 g and 10 g averaged SAR on human head caused by PCS handheld phones is analyzed and discussed. Conventional monopole antenna and planar structured PIFA are used in the computational model to apply to the antennas mounted on handheld phone. These antennas are designed to operate in the near of frequency 1.8 GHz, human head model is sampled to have cell size 1.5 mm and sloped to front direction by 30$^{\circ}$. It is found that, when monopole antenna is applied, 1 g averaged SAR is 1.4 W/kg, 10 g averaged SAR is 0.7 W/kg, when PIFA is applied, for each case, SARs are 1.143 W/kg, 0.4866 W/kg. While the radiation pattern of the monopole antenna is symmetrical, that of planar structured antenna is asymmetrical and SAR caused by PIFA is less than SAR by the monopole antenna. The radiation efficiency of PIFA is 62.6%, which is higher than that of monopole, 53%.

A Meta-Analysis of Treatment Effects on Viral Pneumonia Using TCM Injections Specified in the Clinical Guideline for COVID-19 in China

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) injections specified in the clinical guideline for COVID-19 by conducting a meta-analysis of viral pneumonia data. Methods: TCM injections data on viral pneumonia were collected until July 31, 2021. CNKI, PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane electronic database were used to collect the clinical data. "COVID-19," "Viral pneumonia," "Tanreqing," "Xiyanping," "Reduning," "Xingnaojing," "Xuebijing," "Shenmai," "Shengmai," and "Shenfu" were used as keywords. All data collected were mainly about TCM injections and viral pneumonia. Furthermore, studies that included results such as the total effective rate, cough disappearance time, antipyretic time, lung rhomboid disappearance time, and adverse drug reaction were collected for the meta-analysis to identify the efficacy of TCM injections. However, data unrelated to TCM injections specified in the clinical guidelines for COVID-19 or viral pneumonia were excluded. The quality of included RCTs was assessed by the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool, and Review Manager 5.3 software was used to conduct the meta-analysis. Results: A total of 18 studies with 1540 patients were included in this study. The results of the meta-analysis showed that the total effective rate OR = 4.61 (95% CI 2.92, 7.25, p = 1.00/ I2 = 0%); the cough disappearance time: SMD -1.23 (-1.37, -1.09, p < 0.00001/ I2 = 94%); the antipyretic time: SMD -1.26 (-1.40, -1.11, p < 0.00001/ I2=94%); lung rhomboid disappearance time: SMD -1.17 (-1.33, -1.02, p < 0.00001/ I2 = 89%); and adverse drug reaction was OR 0.36 (95% CI 0.20, 0.64, p = 0.21/ I2 = 30%). From the results, the treatment group (TCM injection) showed better efficacy than the control group (Western medication). Conclusion: Xiyanping, Reduning, and Tanreqing injections may yield benefits as COVID-19 treatments. However, clinical trials on TCM injections for the treatment of COVID-19 are still lacking. More high-quality clinical trials are still required.
