  • New thirty derivatives of 5,6-dihydro-2-trifluoromethyl-1,4-oxathiin carboxanilide as substrate(S) were synthesized and their fungicidal activities in vivo against rice sheath blight(Rhizoctonia solani) and wheat leaf rust(Puccinia recondita) were examined. The structure activity relationships(SAR) between the activities($pI_{50}$) and a physicochemical parameters of substituents(X) at the phenylcarbamoyl group were analyzed using the adaptive regression analysis method. The 3-methoxy, 11, 3-isopropyloxy, 13 and 3-isopropyl substituent, 25 as X on the phenylcarbamoyl group exhibited the most highest fungicidal activity against the two fungi. The fungicidal potency of the (S) against Puccinia recondita was higher than Rhizoctonia solani. In case of Rhizoctonia solani, the molecular hydrophobicity(${\pi}>0$) and resonance effect(R<0) by meta-alkyl substitutents with electron donating were important factors in determining fungicidal activity. And the HOMO energy(HOMO>0), ABSQ, sum of absolute values of the atomic charges on each atom and specific polarizability(Sp.Pol<0) of (S) were significantly influential towards fungicidal activity against Puccinia recondita.. The interaction between (S) and receptor agonist from the based on SAR studies proceeds through charge-control reaction, and conditions to show higher activity has been also discussed.

  • We analyzed the relationships between backscattering coefficients of wheat measured by COSMO-SkyMed SAR and biophysical measurements such as biomass, vegetation water content, and soil moisture over an entire wheat growth period. Backscattering coefficients increased until DOY 129 and then decreased along with fresh weight, dry weight, and vegetation water content. Correlation analysis between backscattering and wheat growth parameters revealed that backscatter correlated well with fresh weight (r=0.88), vegetation water content (r=0.87), and dry weight (r=0.80), while backscatter did not correlated with soil moisture (r=0.18). Prediction equations for estimation of wheat growth parameters from the backscattering coefficients were developed.

  • This paper presents an effective method to achieve the wideband waveform for high resolution SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) using the frequency multiplication technique. And also this paper analyzes the root causes for the spectral regrowth due to 3rd-order intermodulation in chirp bandwidth expansion scheme using quadrature modulator and frequency multipliers. The amplitude and phase imbalance requirement are defined based on the simulation results in terms of quadrature channel imbalance. This minimizes the degradation of range resolution, peak sidelobe ratio and integrated sidelobe ratio. The wideband chirp generator using the frequency multiplier and memory map scheme was manufactured and the compensation technique was presented to reduce the spectral regrowth of SAR waveform by minimizing the amplitude and phase imbalance. After I and Q channel imbalance adjustment, the carrier level reduces -28.7 dBm to -53.4 dBm. Chirp signal with 150 MHz bandwidth at S-band expands to 600 MHz bandwidth at X-band. The sidelobe levels are reduced by about 8 to 9 dB by compensating the amplitude balance between I and Q channels.

  • Predicting the survival time of a person in water (PIW) in maritime search and rescue (SAR) operations is an important concern. Although there have been many studies on survival models in marine-developed countries, it is difficult to apply them to Koreans in Korea's oceans because they were developed using marine distress data from the United Kingdom, United States, and Canada. Data on the survival time of a P IW were collected through interviews and surveys with a special rescue team from the Korea Coast Guard, SAR cases, press releases, and Korea Meteorological Administration data to address these issues. The maximum survival time (Korean) equation was developed by performing a regression analysis of this data, and the applicability to actual marine distress was reviewed and compared to the overseas survival model. By comprehensively using the maximum survival time (Korean), domestic SAR cases, and overseas survival models, guidelines for survival time and intensive and recommended search time were suggested. The study findings can contribute to decision-making, such as the input for search and rescue units. The findings can also help to determine the end of or reductions in SAR operations and explain policy decisions to the public and families of a PIW.

  • As a part of effort to establish an offshore wind resource assessment system of the Korean Peninsula, a numeric wind simulation using mesoscale climate model MM5 and a spatial distribution of offshore wind extracted from SAR remote-sensing satellite image is compared and analyzed. According to the analyzed results, the numeric wind simulation is found to have wind speed over predication tendency at the coastal sea area. Therefore, it is determined that a high-resolution wind simulation is required for complicated coastal landforms. The two methods are verified as useful ways to identify the spatial distribution of offshore wind by mutual complementation and if the meteor-statistical comparative analysis is performed in the future using adequate number of satellite images, it is expected to derive a general methodology enabling systematic validation and correction of the numeric wind simulation.

  • To detect ground subsidence, the permanent scatterer SAR interferometry is applied to the Shinho industrial complex. Eleven JERS-1 images were acquired in the study area between October 1996 and September 1998. All SAR data were co-registered to one master scene (January 8, 1998) and thus 10 interferograms were obtained in a time series. In order to determine permanent scatterers, coherence maps as well as the interferograms were generated and exploited. The coherence at the selected PSs was larger than 0.4 in a 515 sub-window and 0.5 in a 39 sub-window. Twenty-nine PSs within the reclaimed land and 8 PSs (as reference phase) outside the plant were selected for the analysis. The 29 PSs were grouped into 5 sub-groups. We removed the reference phase, which was estimated from 8 outside PSs that were considered as phases free of displacement, from the phases at PSs inside the plant. Residual phases could be interpreted as surface displacement and DEM error. The subsidence of about 40 cm was detected at group 4, while surface displacements were negligible in the rest groups.

  • A new method to decompose the footprints of marine atmosphere boundary layer (MABL) on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery into characteristic spatial scales is proposed. Using two-dimensional Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) we obtain three Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs), which mainly present longitudinal rolls, three-dimensional cells and atmospheric gravity waves (AGW). The rolls and cells have spatial scales between 3.0 km and 3.8 km and between 5.3 km and 7.1 km, respectively. Based on previous observations and mixed-layer similarity theory, we estimated MABL's depths that vary from 0.95 km to 1.2 km over the rolls and from 3.0 km to 3.8 km over the cells. The AGW has maximum spectrum at 14.3 km wavelength. The method developed in this work can be used to decompose other satellite imageries into individual features through characteristic spatial scales.

  • Oil spill accidents at sea result in a wide range of damages, including the destruction of ocean environments and ecosystems, as well as human illnesses by the generation of harmful gases caused by phase changes in crude oil. When an oil spill occurs, an immediate initial action should be performed to minimize the potential damage. Existing studies have attempted to identify crude oil spillage by calculating the crude oil spill range using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite images. However, SAR cannot capture rapidly evolving events because of its low acquisition frequency. Herein, an algorithm for estimating an oil spill area from an image obtained using a digital camera is proposed. Noise that may occur in the image when it is captured is first eliminated by preprocessing, and then the image is analyzed. After analyzing the characteristics of the digital image, a strategy to binarize an image using the color, saturation, or lightness contained in it is adopted. It is found that the oil spill area can be readily estimated from a digital image, allowing for a faster analysis than any conventional method. The usefulness of the oil spill area measurement was confirmed by applying the developed algorithm to various oil spill images.

  • With the development of electronic communication techniques, maritime communication system has been much changed. Since the maritime communications by the radio telegraph have been initiated, the GMDSS came into internationally effect for the life and safety at the sea from 1992, new maritime communication system has been constructed. The new systems have being implemented and applied to merchant ships over 300G/T (or safety of the life. But the annual reports show that most of casualties last 10 years happened to small ships, have been gradually increased. For the improvement of those circumstances, more effective SAR system and administrative plans should be executed. In this paper, we analyzed the maritime casualties last 10 years, maritime communication system, and SAR facilities in domestic. Through the result from the analysis, we discussed the current situations, summarized several conclusions for the developmental proposals.

  • Spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1) is an autosomal-dominant neurodegenerative disorder caused by expansion of the polyglutamine tract in the SCA1 gene product, ataxin-1. Using d2EGFP, a short-lived enhanced green fluorescent protein, we investigated whether polyglutamine-expanded ataxin-1 affects the function of the proteasome, a cellular multicatalytic protease that degrades most misfolded proteins and regulatory proteins. In Western blot analysis and immunofluorescence experiments, d2EGFP was less degraded in HEK 293T cells transfected with ataxin-1(82Q) than in cells transfected with lacZ or empty vector controls. To test whether the stability of the d2EGFP protein was due to aggregation of ataxin-1, we constructed a plasmid carrying $ataxin-1-{\Delta}114$, lacking the self-association region (SAR), and examined degradation of the d2EGFP. Both the level of $ataxin-1-{\Delta}114$ aggregates and the amount of d2EGFP were drastically reduced in cells containing $ataxin-1-{\Delta}114$. Furthermore, d2EGFP localization experiments showed that polyglutamine-expanded ataxin-1 inhibited the general function of the proteasome activity. Taken together, these results demonstrate that polyglutamine-expanded ataxin-1 decreases the activity of the proteasome, implying that a disturbance in the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway is directly involved in the development of spinocerebellar ataxia type1.
