  • The National Park Service is making efforts to create a safe environment by installing rockfall prevention facilities (rockfall prevention nets, fences, and Piam tunnels) in areas at risk of falling rocks. However, the occurrence of falling rocks is increasing every year due to torrential rains caused by climate change, abnormal temperatures in winter, and aging of the ground, and the need to improve the existing rock risk area management plan has emerged. In this study, a pilot area at risk of falling rocks was selected for the Hwanggol district of Chiaksan National Park among Korean national parks, and rockfall analysis was performed using the Rockfall program, and monitoring was conducted by applying a countermeasure method combined with the measurement system to the pilot area. Through this, a rockfall management plan was proposed for continuous management and monitoring of rockfall.

  • In this study, a cryogenic vessel was constructed to maintain and control the safe pressure of liquid hydrogen boil-off gas (BOG), and the numerical analysis was conducted on the development of computational fluid dynamics model inside the high-pressure vessel. An evaluation system was constructed using cryogenic inner and outer containers, pre-cooler, upper flange, and internal high-pressure container. We attempted to analyze the performance of the safety valve by injecting relatively high temperature hydrogen gas to generate BOG gas and quickly control the pressure of the high-pressure vessel up to 10 bar. As a results, the liquid volume fraction decreased with a rapid evaporation, and the pressure distribution increased monotonically inside a high pressure vessel. Additionally, it was found that the time to reach 10 bar was greatly affected by the filling rate of liquid hydrogen.

  • Gravel Compaction Pile (GCP) method is currently being designed and constructed by empirical method because quantitative design method has not been developed, leading to various types of and frequent destruction such as expansion failure and shear failure and difficulties in establishing clear cause and developing measure to prevent destruction. In addition, despite the difference with domestic construction equipment and material characteristics, the methods applied to the overseas ground is applied to the domestic as it is, leading to remarkable difference between applied values and measured values in variables such as bearing capacity and the settlement amount. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to propose a reasonable and safe design method of GCP method by analyzing the settlement and stress behavior characteristics according to ground strength change under GCP method applied to domestic clay ground. For the purpose, settlement amount of composite ground, stress concentration ratio, and maximum horizontal displacement and expected location of GCP were analyzed using ABAQUS. The results of analysis showed that the settlement and Settlement reduction rate of composite ground decreased by more than 60% under replacement ratio of 30% or more, that the maximum horizontal displacement of GCP occurred at the depth 2.6 times pile diameter, and that the difference in horizontal displacement is slight under replacement ratio of 30%.

  • The purpose of this work is to gain a better understanding of the interrelationships between geological structures and slope failure in sedimentary rocks. In the studied slopes, construction-related slope failure could only be observed on the south-dipping slopes. This indicates that slope stability may be dependent on the angular relationships between the dip direction of bedding and the orientation of the slope. Slope failure continued, post-construction, around large fault zones in the studied outcrop; these fault damage zones are, however, not easily recognized in the field. Here we suggest a new method that uses accumulated fracture density to precisely identify fault damage zones. Multiple-faced slopes are now increasingly being exposed during large-scale construction projects in South Korea. This multiple-faced slope analysis indicates that the stability of a slope should be evaluated by identifying domains, through the analysis of possible slopes and their angular relationships with bedding and other discontinuities, prior to construction. Therefore, careful consideration of geological structures such as bedding and other discontinuities, and their angular relationships during the design of cuttings through sedimentary rocks, will increase the efficiency of construction and enable the safe construction of more stable slopes that will retain their stability after construction.

  • When CO2 foam is injected into the saline aquifer, the relative permeability of CO2 decreases and its viscosity increases, thereby reducing mobility in porous media and ultimately improving CO2 storge with enhanced sweep efficiency. In general, surfactants were used to fabricate CO2 foam. Recently, nanoparticles have been used to form stable foam than surfactant. This paper introduces CO2 storage technology using nanoparticle stabilized CO2 foam. If the surface of the hydrophilic nanoparticles is partially modified into a CO2-philic portion, the particles have an affinity for CO2 and water, thus forming a stable CO2 foam even in deep saline aquifers under high temperature and high salinity conditions, thereby it can be stored in the pores of the rock. In terms of economics, injection method using nanopaticle-stabilized CO2 foam is more expensive than the conventional CO2 injection, but it is estimated that it will have price competitiveness because the injection efficiency is improved. From an environmental point of view, it is possible to inject chemical substances such as surfactants and nanomaterials into aquifers or reservoirs for specific purposes such as pollutant removal and oil production. However, some studies have shown that nanoparticles and surfactants are toxic to aquatic animals, so environmentally proven substances should be used. Therefore, further research and development will be needed to study the production and injection of nanoparticle-stabilized CO2 foam that are environmentally safe and economically reasonable.

  • The foundation area for tram contains biotite gneiss, quartzo-feldspathic gneiss, calc-silicate rock, and porphyroblastic gneiss of the pre-Cambrian Kyeonggi gneiss complex. These rocks record at least three stages of deformation, as indicated by fold sets of contrasting orientations (D1-D3). Joints are generally steeply dipping and strike NW-SE to WNW-ESE. The Gonjiam Fault, which strikes WNW-ESE, follows a river in the area. The fault possesses a 3-m-wide fracture zone, a 10-m-wide damage zone, and is 15 km long. Two tunnels have been constructed through the biotite gneiss. The geometric relationship between discontinuities (e.g., joints and foliation) and tunneling direction reveals that set 3 of the AA tunnel is unstable but that BB tunnel is relatively safe.

  • KDC-1 canister for PWR spent fuels which will be used for the Korean Reference Disposal System was developed. The structural analysis of the canister was carried out as a part of the safety analysis. Two conditions, disposal condition and handling condition, were considered for the structural analysis. Three kinds of load cases, normal, abnormal and rock movement, were considered for the disposal condition. The results of the calculation showed that the safety factors from the structural analysis were greater than the design requirements. Two accident scenarios, gripper failure accident and canister drop accident, were analyzed for the handling condition. According to the gripper failure scenario analysis, the handling machine with grippers could be used even in the cases that one or two grippers failed. The maximum von Mises stress from the canister drop accident scenario was 0.762 MPa, which was negligible compared with the yield stress of nodular cast iron. The proposed KDC-1 canister for PWR spent fuels proves to be safe under the repository condition that is based upon the Korean reference disposal system according to the structural analysis for disposal condition and handling condition.

  • Earthquakes are almost impossible to predict and take place in a short time. In addition, there is little time to take aggressive action when an earthquake occurs. Therefore, there are more casualties and property damage than with other natural disasters. Recently, earthquakes have been occurring all over the world. As the number of earthquakes increase, studies on the safety of structures are being carried out. On the other hand, there are few studies on the electric facilities, which are relatively non - structural factors. Currently, electrical equipment in Korea is often not designed for earthquake safety and is quite vulnerable to damage when an earthquake occurs. Therefore, in this study, modeling was conducted through ABAQUS similar to an actual cabinet panel and 3D dynamic nonlinear analysis was performed using a natural seismic. According to seismic zone I and normal ground rock conditions of the power transmission and transmission facility seismic design practical guide, the maximum response acceleration of the performance level was 0.157g. In this study, however, it was not safe to reach the limit state of 30% of the analytical result at 0.1g for the general cabinet panel. From the results, the seismic fragility curve was derived and analyzed. The derived seismic fragility curve is presented as a quantitative basis for determining the limit state of the cabinet panel and can be utilized as basic data in related research.

  • Recycled plastic containers, so-called 'Tarai' in Korea which are often used as food containers, were collected from 23 domestic manufacturers. Then, their components were analyzed to find out whether they are safe for the use of food-contact material, to meet the standards and specifications of Korean hygienic regulations, the 'Food Code.' The components of the material were analyzed by using Fourier Transform-Infrared (FT-IR), Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), and Elementary Analyzer (EA). The analysis of the FT-IR and the DSC showed that the main component of the samples was polyethylene. Furthermore, the analysis of the EA for 'Tarai' sample revealed the same ratio of C and H elements as in the case of polyethylene which was 1 to 2. Phenol and formaldehyde were not detected in all the samples. As for the antioxidant tests, Irganox 1010, Irganox 1076 and Irganox 1330 were detected in various samples. With regard to the material test for heavy metals, 7 out of 23 samples exceeded the limit value of 100 mg/kg in lead contents. No standard and specification is yet prescribed in the 'Food Code' for the material of 'Tarai' as plastic containers for food. This study suggests that the use of 'Tarai' as a food container should be strictly controlled.

  • With a development of electrical technology in recent, it is possible to measure distance without direct contact to object using laser which launched at instrument and reflect from object. Furthermore, the advent of non prism total station brought the increment of application in many fields including not only road, airport, and harbors but also measurement and monitoring of structural displacement in construction fields. In this study, therefore, to evaluate accuracy of non prism total station, accuracy was analyzed by measuring certain distance which classified by both certain materials and angle of reflection. By this method, the derived values were applied to topographical survey for the efficient applicability. According to a study, result value of non prism total station was satisfBctory regardless of material when the angle of reflection was 90 degrees. RMSE increased when the angle of reflection are gradually increased to acute angle. In result of regression analysis using certain distance which classified by both materials and angles of reflection, there is relationship between distance and angle of reflection, but material has no relevance to the result value. When carrying out general topographical survey, proper application of non prism total station will go far conducting safe and prompt survey at the dangerous site such a road which have lots of traffic flow and rock joint which have high angles of inclination.
