In this study, the effects of shear flows around a 2-dimensional airfoil, S809 on its aerodynamic characteristics were analyzed by CFD simulations. Various parameters including reference inflow velocity, shear rate, angle of attack, and cord length of the airfoil were examined. From the simulation results, several important characteristics were found. Shear rate in a flow makes some changes in the lift coefficient depending on its sign and magnitude but angle of attack does not have a distinguishable influence. Cord length and reference inflow also cause proportional and inversely proportional changes in lift coefficient, respectively. We adopted an analytic expression for the lift coefficient from the thin airfoil theory and proposed a modified form applicable to the traditional load analysis procedure based on the blade element momentum theory. Some preliminary results applied to an well known load simulation software, FAST, are presented.

The wake behavior of extended flat plate and serration in the trailing edge of S809 airfoil is presented in this experimental study using wind tunnel testing. The clustering of wind turbines in wind parks has recently been a pressing issue, due to the expected increase in power output and deciding the number of wind turbines to be installed. One of the prominent factors which influence the performance of the subsequent wind turbines is the downstream wake characteristics. A series of wind tunnel investigations were performed to assess the downstream near wake characteristics of the S809 airfoil at various angles of attack corresponding to the Reynolds Number Re = 2.02 × 105. These experimental results revealed the complex nature of the downstream near wake characteristics featuring substantial asymmetry arising out of the incoherent flow separations prevailing over the suction and the pressure sides of the airfoil. Based on the experimental results, it is found that the wake width and the downstream velocity ratio decrease with an increase in the angle of attack. Nonetheless, the dissipation length and downstream velocity ratio increases proportionally in the downstream direction. Additionally, attempts were made to understand the physical nature of the near wake characteristics at 1C, 2C, 3C and 4C downstream locations.
The objective of this study is to investigate aerodynamic characteristics of a Horizontal-axis wind turbines(HAWT), using CFD method with a commercial code STAR-CCM+ version 3.06. To verify the reliability of the computations, the CFD results are compared with the experimental ones of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory(NREL) Phase Ⅵ HAWT. For the comparison and examination of aerodynamic characteristics, the existent shape with a predesigned twist angle was replaced by the one with one-dimensional linear twist angle. In this study, the pressure contour and stream line around the blade were analyzed as main focus. Through this study the more efficient shape of airfoil is suggested with consideration of manufacturing cost.
The optimum design and the performance analysis software called POSEIDON for the HAWT (Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine) was developed by use of BEMT. The Prandtl's tip loss theory was adopted to consider the blade tip loss. The lift and the drag coefficient of S-809 airfoil were predicted via X-FOIL and also the post stall characteristics of S-809 were estimated by the Viterna's equations. All the predicted aerodynamic characteristics are fairly well agreed with the wind tunnel test results, performed by Sommers in Delft university of technology. The rated power of the testing rotor is 20kW(FIL-20) at design conditions. The experimental aerodynamic parameters and the X-FOIL data were used for the power prediction of the FIL-20 respectively. The comparison results shows good agreement in power prediction.

In the present paper, the scale effects of two-dimensional airfoil and three-dimensional wind turbine were investigated by using FLUENT software. For two dimensional analysis, flow around S809 airfoil with various Reynolds No. and Mach No. conditions were simulated. For three dimensional analysis, scaled NREL Phase VI wind turbine models from 6% to 1,600% were simulated under the same tip speed ratio condition. Finally, aerodynamic comparisons between two-dimensional flow and three dimensional wind turbine flow are made for the feasibility study of scale effect corrections. Currently, KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute) is preparing for the wind tunnel test of 12% NREL Phase VI wind turbine and the performance analysis of the scaled NREL wind turbine model will be validated by the wind tunnel test.

In the present study, the effects of contaminant accumulation and surface roughness on the aerodynamic performance of wind turbine blade sections were numerically investigated by using a flow solver based on unstructured meshes. The turbulent flow over the rough surface was modeled by a modified ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model. The calculations were made for the NREL S809 airfoil with varying contaminant sizes and positions at several angles of attack. It was found that as the contaminant size increases, the degradation of the airfoil performance becomes more significant, and this trend is further amplified near the stall condition. When the contaminant is located at the upper surface near the leading edge, the loss in the aerodynamic performance of the blade section becomes more critical. It was also found that the surface roughness leads to a significant reduction of lift, in addition to increased drag.
