Effectiveness of BBV152 vaccine and ChAdOx1-S vaccine in preventing severe disease among vaccinated patients admitted to a designated COVID-19 hospital in India

  • Purpose: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a highly formidable disease. Globally, multiple vaccines have been developed to prevent and manage this disease. However, the periodic mutations of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 variants cast doubt on the effectiveness of commonly used vaccines in mitigating severe disease in the Indian population. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of the BBV152 vaccine and ChAdOx1-S vaccine in preventing severe forms of the disease. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study, based on hospital records, was conducted on 204 vaccinated COVID-19 patients using a consecutive sampling approach. Data on their vaccination status, comorbidities, and high-resolution computed tomography lung reports' computed tomography severity scores were extracted from their medical records. Fisher's exact test and binomial logistic regression analysis were employed to assess the independent associations of various factors with the dependent variables. Results: Of the 204 records, 57.9% represented males, with a mean age of 61.5±9.8 years. Both vaccines demonstrated effective protection against severe illness (90.2%), with BBV152 offering slightly better protection compared to ChAdOx1-S. Male gender, partial vaccination, comorbid conditions, and the type of vaccine were identified as independent predictors of severe lung involvement. Conclusion: This study indicates that both vaccines were highly effective (90%) in preventing severe forms of the disease in fully vaccinated individuals. When comparing the two vaccines, BBV152 was slightly more effective than ChAdOx1-S in preventing severe COVID-19.

  • Human and bovine dopamine transporters (DAT) demonstrate discrete functional differences in the dopamine (DA) transport and cocaine binding. The functional analyses on the chimeras of human and bovine DAT have revealed that the region from the $133^{rd}{\;}to{\;}186^{th}$ residue(encompassing the $3^{rd}$ trans-membrane domain (TM) is responsible for the substrate transport and cocaine binding. The present studies have been done to find out the specific amino acid(s) which is essential for the binding of cocaine to DAT by interchanging the amino acids in that region between human and bovine DAT. When isoleucine, the $152^{nd}$ residue of chimera B3 (bovine DAT sequence) was transformed back to valine, the human DAT residue at the identical position, the cocaine binding was remarkably recovered to 98% of the human DAT values. In addition, the cocaine binding of the human DAT was decreased by 57% by substituting isoleucine for valine at position 152. When isoleucine at position 152 of the chimera B3 was converted to the other amino acids to provide an possible molecular basis for the functional role of the $152^{nd}$ residue, only the conversion to alanine among acids tested significantly the cocaine by 34%, but these effect were not as much as those by the conversion to valine. In conclusion, valine at position 152 is a crucial amino acid for the interaction of cocaine to the DAT.

A Case of Ectopic Rathke's Cleft Cyst in the Prepontine Cistern

  • A Rathke's cleft cyst (RCC) is a benign pituitary cyst derived from the remnant of Rathke's pouch, and usually presents as an intrasellar lesion with varying degrees of suprasellar extension. However, to date, a description of a primary prepontine RCC with no intrasellar component has not been reported. The author describes an exceptional case of a symptomatic RCC located behind the sella turcica in a 41-year-old woman who presented with severe headache. The author also provides an embryological hypothesis of the development of an ectopic RCC, with a special emphasis on radiologic characteristics.

Japan's gastrodiplomacy as soft power: global washoku and national food security

  • Until recently, Japanese cuisine was known only for sushi and was still considered exotic outside the archipelago. However, today the number of specialized restaurants which serve other traditional foods is constantly increasing all over the world, making Japanese gastronomy one of the most influential. Japanese government has supported the promotion of national cuisine worldwide in different ways, making washoku (Japanese traditional cuisine) one of the main elements of Japan's soft power and cultural diplomacy. In this paper, I will analyse the connection between Japan's gastrodiplomacy, defined as the use of typical food and dishes as an instrument of soft power, and Japan's food security strategy. I will argue that the strategy of promotion of washoku worldwide is not a mere act of popularization of Japanese food but it is strictly related to the issue of the low self-sufficiency rate of the country, as the main objective of the government is the raise of food export, in order to foster agricultural production and improve self-sufficiency.

  • Studies on the performance of a heat pump using non-azeotropic refrigerant mixtures are done. In order to estimate the thermodynamic properties for the selected non-azeotropic refrigerant mixtures including R22/R152a, R22/R142b, R22/R114 and R13B1/R152a, Peng-Robinson equation of state is adopted. The pressure-enthalpy diagram and the temperature-entropy diagram are plotted for each refrigerant mixture. Considerations on the capacity modulation for the heat pump system using refrigerant mixtures are taken into. Results show that when the heating load varies, the possibility for the capacity modulation is found in the heat pump system using a compressor with constant volume flow rate. Under a constant heating capacity condition in the heat pump system, the coefficient of performance increases when the refrigerant mixtures are used. The volume flow rate decreases as the mass fraction of lower boiler increases in this case.

  • A theoretical cycle analysis has been performed for a basic heat pump, charged with non-azeotropic refrigerant mixtures, R22/R114 and R13B1/R152a. At first, a procedure is introduced to calculate thermodynamic properties simply and correctly, and the advantages of using refrigerant mixtures are discussed through the cycle analysis. It is shown that by using refrigerant mixtures in the heat pump, several improvements can be made. In comparison with conventional pure refrigerants, the application of refrigerant mixtures results in high reliabilities caused by the extension of the application limit, energetic improvements, and a continuous capacity control. From generalizing various results, the optimum compositions in refrigerant mixtures are also determined. The 30%/70% and 40%/60% compositions are selected for R22/R114 and R13B1/R152a, respectively.
