In a continuation of our previous studies on blood compatibility profiles of anion-substituted poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes, in which hydroxyl groups have been replaced with carboxymethyl (C-PVA) and sulfonyl groups (S-PVA), we have studied the activation of complement components and the changes in white cell and platelet count in vitro and compared them with those of unmodified PVA, Cuprophane, and low-density polyethylene. Complement activation of fluid phase components, C3a, Bb, iC3b, and SC5b-9, and of bound phases, C3c, C3d, and SC5b-9, were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunoblot, respectively. The changes in the number of white cells and platelets following complement activation were counted using a Coulter counter. C-PVA and S-PVA activated C3 to a lesser extent than did PVA, which we attribute to the diminished level of surface nucleophiles of the samples. In addition, C- and S-PVA exhibit increased inhibition of Bb production, resulting in a decrease in the extent of C5 activation. Consequently, because of the reduced activation of C3 and C5, C- and S-PVA samples cause marked decreases in the SC5b-9 levels in plasma. We also found that the negatively charged sulfonate and carboxylate groups of the samples cause a greater extent of adsorbtion of the positively charged anaphylatoxins, C3a and C5a, because of strong electrostatic attraction, which in turn provides an inhibition of chemotaxis and activation of leukocytes. The ability to inhibit complement production, together with the binding ability of anaphylatoxins of the C- and S-PVA samples, leads to a prominent decrease in lysis of leukocytes as well as activation of platelets.
In order to improve the mechanical properties of the sulfonated polysulfone (SPSf) membranes previously synthesized in our laboratory, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was blended which is well known as the excellent physical and chemical properties. The resulting membranes blended with several molecular weight of PVA varying from 13,000 to 124,000 have been characterized to investigate the effect of PVA molecular weight in terms of ion conductivities, methanol permeabilities, water contents and ion exchange capacities for both heat treated and untreated membranes at 150$^{\circ}C$. The proton conductivity is decreased as the molecular weight of PVA increases. The plain SPSf-6.0 showed the proton conductivity of 0.078 S/cm whereas the blended membrane with M.W. 31,000 PVA indicated 0.04 S/cm. For methanol permeabilities, when PVA is added to SPAf-6.0, methanol crossover is increased because of the gain of the hydrophilicity from 3.4 to 6.5${\times}$10$\^$-6/ $\textrm{cm}^2$/s. For the annealed blended membranes (with M.W. 31,000 PVA), both the methanol corssover and proton conductivity showed very consistent values, about 2.3${\times}$10$\^$-6/ $\textrm{cm}^2$/s and 0.036 S/cm, respectively.
Proton exchange membrane composed of PVA/PAM/ZrP was prepared and effect of PAM and ZrP contents on properties and performance of the membrane were investigated. PAM as a crosslinking agent was mixed into PVA solution with different concentration (7∼11 wt%) and the PVA/PAM solution was cast to prepare PVA/PAM crosslinked membrane. The membrane was treated in the solution of zirconyl chloride and phophoric acid to make a PVA/PAM/ZrP composite membrane. Methanol permeability, ion conductivity, swelling and ion exchange capacity of the membranes with different ZrP concentration were $10^{-8}∼l0^{-6}$$\textrm{cm}^2$/sec, $10^{-3}~10^{-2}$ S/cm, 0.26∼1.17 g $H_2O$/g membrane and 2.59∼5.1 meq/g membrane, respectively. Hethanol permeability and ion conductivity of the PVA/PAM/ZrP membrane were improved by 18% and 23%, respectively, compared to those of the PVA/PAM membrane.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) obtained from PVPi has the highest syndiotacticity among (PVA)s obtained via radical polymerization, and the s-diad content of PVA prepared by low temperature polymerization of vinyl pivalate (VPi)[1-5] comes to eve. 60%, Therefore, we an obtain (PVA)s with various tacticities through the copolymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) and VPi and can examine the relation between physical properties of (PVA)s and their tacticities. In this study, the characteristics of lead removal by PVA and alginate bead which used widely as immobilizing agents were investigated, and the difference of removal amounts between pure PVA/alginate bead and Sargassum thunbergii immobilized bead was studied. All PVA beads, pure and S. thunbergii immobilized, reached an equilibrium state in about 1 hour, and S. thunbergii immobilized bead adsorbed more lead than pure one. But in the case of alginate beads, they needed much time, about 5 hours, to reach an equilibrium state, and adsorbed lead four times higher than PVA beads. Therefore, it was considered that alginate beads had more mass transfer resistance and function groups which adsorb lead such as hydroxyl, carboxyl and etc. than PVA bead. To examine the continuous usage of alginate beads, the process of adsorption/desorption of lead was conducted repeatedly. As the process proceeded, the amounts of lead adsorption decrease, so it was indicated that the non-desorbed lead from alginate bead at first adsorption/desorption process remained constantly.
It has been attempted to improve the anti-static property of Nylon 6 by means of Vapor-phase polymerization of thiophene in Nylon 6/PVA blend films impregnated with aluminium chloride as an oxident. After Polymerization of thiophene for two hours in Nylon 6/PVA blend films the conductivity increased from $10^{-12}-10^{-13}S/cm\;to\;10^{-5}-10^{-7}$S/cm, and the conductivity of composite films increased with increasing the concentration of aluminium chloride, the content of PVA annd polymerization time of thiophene. Polythiophene introduced in Nylon 6/PVA blend films has been confirmed by FT-IR spectra and scanning electron micrographs.
For studying the influence of addition of Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-montmorillonite complex on the hydration of Portland cement the PVA-montmorillonite derivatives were prepared in advance an characterized system-of Portland cement the PVA-montmorillonite derivatives were prepared in advance and characterized systema-tically. PVA with the polymerizationdegree ranging from 500 to 2000 have been intercalated into the lamellar structure of hydrated montmorillonites which were fractionated under 2㎛ by Stock's rule. In all cases the constant basal spacing of ∼20Å was determined whatever the molecular weight of PVA used. And the carbon chain orientation of PVA in the interfoliar space has been deduced to be parallel with bilayer structure.
PVA/silica hybrid xerogels were synthesized by sonohydrolysis of a mixture of 2-way catalyzed TEOS and water solution of PVA. PVA was successfully removed from the xerogels through calcination and its removal was confirmed through TGA analysis of the calcined gel. Microstructure of the gels was studied through SEM, XRD and FTIR. Nitrogen sorption studies were conducted to find out surface area of different samples. It was found out that the samples having PVA removed through calcinations have higher surface area (411.64 $m^2$/g) than the samples (353.544 $m^2$/g) synthesized without any PVA. Adsorption properties of these xerogels synthesized by using different ratios of components were studied by taking Rhodamine G6 as a model adsorbate. The experiments were conducted at room temperature ($25^{\circ}C$). UV visible spectroscopy was used to measure the concentration of the dye before and after adsorption. The adsorption data of Rhodamine G6 on PVA modified silica is described by the Freundlich's adsorption model.
PVA degrading bacteria were isolated from water system, and identified as Pseudomonas cepacia and Pseudmonas pseudomallei, which were named as Pseudomonas sp. G5Y and Pseudomonas sp. PW. It was found out that those two kinds of bacteria have a symbiotic relationship to degrade PVA. For the mixed culture of these bacteria, the optimal conditions of pH, temperature, nitrogen source, and polymerization degree of PVA were found to be 7.5, $35^{\circ}C$, ammonium sulfate, and 500, respectively. Also, the growth of these bacteria was promoted by trace elements such as vitamin B1, B12, pyridoxine, and p-aminobenzoate, respectively. The specific growth rate of mixed bacteria was inhibited when the concentration of PVA was more than 20g/l. The substrate inhibition kinetics of the mixed culture was $${\mu}=\frac{0.065S}{2.56+S+(S^2/156}hr^{-1}$

Small intestinal submucosa (SIS) consists of some growth factors which can stimulate cell activity, and PVA has been widely utilized in the area of wound dressing as hydrogel which is easy to be removed from wounds. In this study, native SIS sheets were coated with PVA by immersing them into 2, 4, and 10 wt% of PVA solution and then lyophilized on two type of molds to endow the prepared wound dressing with easy removal property from wounds. The mechanical properties were examined through tensile test. Moreover, enzymatic degradation, water uptake, and in vitro test were carried out to characterize the prepared SIS sheets. The tensile strength of the SIS sheets coated with PVA (PVA-SIS) were decreased, whereas the elongation were increased. Degradation ratio of the PVA-SIS sheets was decreased compare to native SIS. Water uptake ability was improved at 2 and 4 wt% of PVA. The degree of fibroblast attachment was lower than the native SIS sheets. In conclusion, this study suggests that the PVA coated SIS sheets have a potential for the applications of wound dressing and biodegradable injectable materials.
