Effects of Microbial Phytase Supplementation to Diets with Low Non-Phytate Phosphorus Levels on the Performance and Bioavailability of Nutrients in Laying Hens

  • An 8 week feeding trial was conducted with 864 ISA Brown laying hens, 48 weeks old, to determine if microbial phytase $(Natuphos^{(R)})$ supplementation can reduce non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) level in laying diets. The experiment consisted of four dietary treatments: T1, control diet with 0.26% NPP (0.55% total P) wand no supplementary phytase; T2, 0.21% NPP (0.50% total P) diet with 250 U of phytase/kg of diet; T3, 0.16% NPP (0.45% total P) diet with 250 U of phytase/kg of diet; and T4, 0.11% NPP (0.40% total P) diet with 250 U of phytase/kg of diet. T3 showed the highest egg production and egg weight and the lowest feed conversion while T4 gave the lowest egg production and the highest feed conversion and mortality. Daily feed consumption ranged from 130.4 g (T4) to 132.7 g (T2). T1 and T2 were not significantly different in the production parameters. Eggshell strength, egg specific gravity, and eggshell thickness were not significantly different among treatments. However, broken egg ratio was significantly lower in T2 and T4 than in T1. Retentions of Ca, P, Mg, and Cu were greater in phytase supplemented treatments (T2, T3, and T4) than the control (T1), and those in T3 and T4 were greater than in T2. Excretions of P in phytase supplemented treatments (T2, T3, and T4) were significantly (p<0.05) smaller than in T1 but excretions of N were not significantly different among the treatments. Contents of ash in tibiae were not significantly affected by treatments, but contents of Ca, P, Mg, and Zn was increased and that of Cu decreased by phytase supplementation. It is concluded that the NPP concentration in the diet of Brown layers consuming about 130 g/d of feed can be safely lowered from 0.26% (0.55% total P) to 0.16% (0.45% total P). The excretion of P was reduced by the inclusion of 250 U phytase/kg of diet.

  • Containment Filtered Vent Systems (CFVSs) have been mainly equipped in nuclear power plants in Europe and Canada for the controlled depressurization of the containment atmosphere under severe accident conditions. This is to keep the containment integrity against overpressure during the course of a severe accident, in which the radioactive gas-steam mixture from the containment is discharged into a system designed to remove the radionuclides. In Korea, a CFVS was first introduced in the Wolsong unit-1 nuclear power plant as a mitigation measure to deal with the threat of over pressurization, following post-Fukushima action items. In this paper, the overall features of a CFVS installation such as risk assessments, an evaluation of the performance requirements, and a determination of the optimal operating strategies are analyzed for the Wolsong unit 1 nuclear power plant using a severe accident analysis computer code, ISAAC.

  • Currently an office in information society is advanced to a digitalized VDT office. The VDT office has a natural luminous system prioritizing visual perception and so importance of lighting design by artificial lighting is emphasized in the VDT office. The purpose of the study is to analyze Illumination and Luminance for lighting design by the standard of ergonomics in the VDT office. The study analyzed Illumination and Luminance in the main control room of an nuclear power plant needing a design of ergonomics ACR(Advanced Control Room) type Ling Ao phase II NPP MCR in Guangdong, China. The study examined the relativity of ACR characteristics to its operator's duties and set up an outline of lighting design, the standard of ergonomics and input data for the analysis. Thus, the study examined appropriateness with the standard of ergonomics setting up the analyzed Illumination and Luminance and drew a conclusion.

  • An Operating Experience Report(OER) has written about events and accidents happened at a Nuclear Power Plant(NPP). The purpose of publishing the OER is to prevent the similar event or accident repeatedly by spreading the experience of a single plant to other plants personnel. In this paper, it is analyses that the foreign NPPs' OERs on JIT published by the International Nuclear Agency(WANO, INPO, COG, BE). The analysis introduced in this paper is performed along with the various factors such as type of work, root-cause, and equipment. The root-cause analysis about the OERs shows that the Human-error is the major factor in foreign NPPs, but on the other hand equipment problem is the main part of the Domestic NPPs. The ratio of the foreign NPP's OERs on JIT according to the type of work was applied to KHNP-JIT developed nowadays for the first time in KOREA.

Sentiment analysis of nuclear energy-related articles and their comments on a portal site in Rep. of Korea in 2010-2019

  • This paper reviewed the temporal changes in the public opinions on nuclear energy in Korea with a big data analysis of nuclear energy-related articles and their comments posted on the portal site NAVER. All articles that included at least one of "nuclear energy," "nuclear power plant (NPP)," "nuclear power phase-out," or "anti-nuclear" in their titles or main text were extracted from those posted on NAVER in January 2010-December 2019. First, we performed annual word frequency analysis to identify what words had appeared most frequently in the articles. For that period, the most frequent words were "NPP," "nuclear energy," and "energy." In addition, "safety" has remained in the upper ranks since the Fukushima NPP accident. Then, we performed sentiment analysis of the pre-processed articles. The sentiment analysis showed that positive-tone articles have been reported more frequently than negativetone over the entire analysis period. Last, we performed sentiment analysis of the comments on the articles to examine the public's intention regarding nuclear issues. The analysis showed that the number of negative comments to articles each month-irrespective of positive or negative tone-was always larger than that of positive comments over the entire analysis period.

Development of the draft guidelines of the decommissioning plan for a nuclear power plant in Korea (국내 원자로시설 해체계획서 세부 작성지침(안) 개발)

  • It is essential to prepare the decommissioning plan for a nuclear power plant (NPP) for the safe decommissioning of the NPP, minimization of the generation of decommissioning wastes, and protection of human beings and environment. Although Kori unit 1 and Wolsong unit 1 will be destined to their decommissioning in Korea in the near future. there is no provisons about preparing the decommissioning plan. In this paper, therefore, the draft guidelines of the decommissioning plan for a NPP were developed by considering the domestic situation, based on the comparative analyses of the regulatory guidelines of the decommissioning plan in U.S., U.K. and France. The draft guidelines are expected to play an important role to modify the domestic laws and regulations on the decommissioning of the NPP, and to give a license holder in charge of decommissioning the detailed instructions for preparing it in advance.

  • A Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is a complex dynamic system-of-systems with highly nonlinear behaviors. In order to control the plant operation under both normal and abnormal conditions, the different systems in NPPs (e.g., the reactor core components, primary and secondary coolant systems) are usually monitored continuously, resulting in very large amounts of data. This situation makes it possible to integrate relevant qualitative and quantitative knowledge with artificial intelligence techniques to provide faster and more accurate behavior predictions, leading to more rapid decisions, based on actual NPP operation data. Data-driven models (DDM) rely on artificial intelligence to learn autonomously based on patterns in data, and they represent alternatives to physics-based models that typically require significant computational resources and might not fully represent the actual operation conditions of an NPP. In this study, a feed-forward backpropagation artificial neural network (ANN) model was trained to simulate the interaction between the reactor core and the primary and secondary coolant systems in a pressurized water reactor. The transients used for model training included perturbations in reactivity, steam valve coefficient, reactor core inlet temperature, and steam generator inlet temperature. Uncertainties of the plant physical parameters and operating conditions were also incorporated in these transients. Eight training functions were adopted during the training stage to develop the most efficient network. The developed ANN model predictions were subsequently tested successfully considering different new transients. Overall, through prompt prediction of NPP behavior under different transients, the study aims at demonstrating the potential of artificial intelligence to empower rapid emergency response planning and risk mitigation strategies.
