  • We investigated the effect of weld details on fatigue behavior of a material, JIS SM 490 A, with yielding strength of about 350 MPa and tensile strength of about 520 MPa. Tensile tests, instrumented indentation tests and fatigue tests were carried out on double V-grooved butt weld plates such as reinforcement removed, as-welded and weld toe ground. In addition plates with transverse fillet welded web, load carrying cruciform fillet welded plates, non-load-carrying cruciform fillet welded plates, longitudinal butt welded plates and welded rectangular life-size box beams were tested. S-N curves for the above specimens were obtained and analyzed.

  • Austenitic stainless steel was investigated under cyclic loading in electrolytes with different chloride contents and pH and at different temperatures. The testing solutions were 13.2 % NaCl (80,000 ppm $Cl^-$) at $80^{\circ}C$and 43 % $CaCl_2$ (275,000 ppm $Cl^-$) at $120^{\circ}C$. In addition to S-N curves in inert and corrosive media, the fracture surfaces were investigated with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to analyse the type of attack. The experimental results showed that a sharp decrease in corrosion fatigue properties can be correlated with the occurrence of stress corrosion cracking. The correlation of occurring types of damage in different corrosion systems is described.

  • For practical applications, the evaluation of reliability or endurance of HTS conductors is necessary. The mechanical properties and the critical current, Ie, of multifilamentary Bi-2223 superconducting tapes, externally reinforced with stainless steel foils, subjected to high cycle fatigue loading in the longitudinal direction were investigated at 77K. The S-N curves were obtained and its transport property was evaluated with the increase of repeated cycles at different stress amplitudes. The effect of the stress ratio, R, on the Ie degradation behavior under fatigue loading was also examined considering the practical application situation of HTS tapes. Microstructure observation was conducted in order to understand the Ie degradation mechanism in fatigued Bi-2223 tapes.

  • Recently structural damage has been frequently observed in reinforced concrete bridges due to repeted ioads such as vehicular traffic and due to continual overloads by heavy trucks. Therefore. In this study, the static tests and the fatigue tests were performed on a series of SFRC(steel fibrous reinforced concrete) to investigate the fatigue behavior of SFRC varying with the steel fibrous contents. Through this test, the diagonal cracking loads, ultimate loads, deflections, strains of concrete and steel. On this basis, the crack growth and failure of SFRC beams were studied, and a model for S-N relationship of SFRC was proposed.

  • An Articulated tower is one of the compliant offshore structures connected to the sea-bed through a universal joint which is the most vulnerable location of the tower that sustains the randomly fluctuating shear stresses. The time history response of the bottom hinge shear is obtained and presented in the spectral form. The fatigue and fracture reliability assessment of the tower joint against randomly varying shear stresses have been carried out. Non-linear limit state functions are derived in terms of important random variables using S-N curve and fracture mechanics approaches. Advanced First Order Reliability Method is used for reliability assessment. Sensitivity analysis shows the influence of various variables on the hinge safety. Fatigue life estimation has been made using probabilistic approach.

  • In general, the load which acts on the structure is almost independent of time in many locations. In this case. It is difficult to estimate the life with the service load history, because the structure is on the multi- axial and multi-point loading states. In this study, the service load of the excavator which is widely used in industry field was calculated using measured cylinder pressures and displacements. The fatigue life was estimated using the multi-axial and multi-point load counting method. Service load history of 4 pin joint which act independently each other is yielded by mult-axial and multi-point load counting method. The stress spectrum is yielded by superposition of the results of FEM stress analysis applied unit load. Palm- gren-Miner's cumulative Damage is 0.000804 for Von Mises equivalent stress sequence by one side fillet weld S-N curve. This result agress with Bench test results. As a result of this study, the fatigue life esti- mation using the multi-axial and multi-axial and multi-point load counting method is useful.

  • Although the previous researches evaluated the fatigue behavior of Al/GFRP laminates using the traditional fracture mechanism, their researches were not sufficient to do it : the damage zone of Al/GFRP laminates was occurred at the delamination zone instead of the crack-metallic damages. Thus, previous researches were not applicable to the fatigue behavior of Al/GFRP laminates. The major purpose of this study was to evaluate delamination behavior using the relationship between crack length (a) and delamination width (b) in Al/GFRP laminate. The details of investigation were as follows: 1) Relationship between the crack length (a) and the delamination width (b), 2) Relationship between the delamination aspect ratio (b/a) and the delamination area rate ((A$\_$D/)/subN// (A$\_$D/)$\_$All/), 3) The effect of delamination aspect ratio (b/a) on the delamination shape factor (f$\_$s/) and the delamination growth rate (dA$\_$D// da). As results, it was known that the delamination aspect ratio (b/a) was decreased and the delamination area rate ((A$\_$D/)$\_$N// (A$\_$D/)$\_$All/) was increased as the normalized crack size (a/W) was increased. And, the delamination shape factors (f$\_$s/) of the ellipse-II(f$\_$s3/) was greater than of the ellipse-I(f$\_$s2/) but that of the triangle (f$\_$s1/) was less than of the ellipse-I(f$\_$s2/).

  • Crankshaft, the core element of the engine of a vehicle, transforms the translational motion generated by combustion to rotational motion. Its failure will cause serious damage to the engine so its reliability verification must be performed. In this study, the S-N data of the bending and torsion fatigue limits of a crankshaft are derived. To evaluate the reliability of the crankshaft, reliability verification and analysis are performed. For the purpose of further evaluation, the bending and torsion tests of the original crankshaft are carried out, and failure mode analysis is made. The appropriate number of samples, the applied load, and the test time are computed. On the basis of the test results, Weibull analysis for the shape and scale parameters of the crankshaft is estimated. Likewise, the $B_{10}$ life under 50% of the confidence level and the MTTF are exactly calculated, and the groundwork for improving the reliability of the crankshaft is laid.

  • In this study, a fatigue analysis of an external fuel tank and pylon for fixed-wing aircraft was carried out as part of the domestic development of fixed-wing aircraft. Through structural analysis, the analysis areas were selected, and the transfer function for unit loads was established in the selected parts. For each of the continuous load profiles, stress components in the selected areas were calculated using the load of each profile and the transfer function, and the Von Mises equivalent stress was employed as the representative stress of each profile. In addition, the rainflow counting technique was used to extract individual profiles obtained from the initial large load profiles and to calculate their amplitude and average values. For life evaluation, the S-N diagram of the Metallic Materials Properties Development and Standardization (MMPDS) was applied, and the damage value was calculated by Miner's rule to assess the life of the selected area. As a result of the life assessment, the life span requirement for the selected area of the external fuel tank and the pylon was assessed as being satisfied.

  • Fretting of fuel rod cladding material, Zircaloy-4 tube, in PWR nuclear power plants must be reduced and avoided. Nowadays the introduction of surface treatments or coatings is expected to be an ideal solution to fretting damage since fretting is closely related to wear. corrosion and fatigue. Therefore. in this study the fretting wear experiment was performed using TiAlN coated Zircaloy-4 tube as the fuel rod cladding and uncoated Zircaloy-4 as on of grids, especially concentrating on the sliding component. Fretting wear resistance of TiAlN coated Zircaloy-4 tubes was improved compared with that of TiN coated tubes and uncoated tubes and fretting wear mechanisms were brittle fracture and plastic flow at lower slip amplitude but severe oxidation and spallation of oxidative layer at higher ship amplitude.
