  • This study deals with the effect on non-martensitic layer on the fatigue strength in carburized gear. The test gears are carburized, then treated by the combination of chemical polishing and electro-polishing. Carburization treatment is used widely on parts of power transmission system like surface hardened layer to improve fatigue strength. Carburized gears are observed using a scanning electron microscope(SEM) to determine the characteristics of crack initiation mechanism in the surface layer. The constant street amplitude fatigue test is performed by using and electro-hydraulic servo-controlled pulsating tester. The S-N curves are obtained and illustrated. The effect of non-martensitic layer on the fatigue strength is clarified.

  • Fatigue properties of composite materials are extremely important to design durable and reliable helicopter rotor blades. However, it is very difficult to apply conventional fatigue test loads in short period. Therefore, accelerating test speed and facilitating spectrum load realization are required. In this study, we have developed a fatigue testing method that uses a resonance of simply supported beam type blade specimen. This test consists in exciting the blade specimen with a frequency that corresponds to its natural frequency. In that case, the test specimen similar to a beam fixed between two pivot points starts vibrating and is significantly deformed. Resonant fatigue tests were performed by changing exciting vertical amplitude and frequency, and S-N curves of each composite materials were successfully obtained.

  • It is very important to have exact informations on the properties and characteristics of the sintered steel as a new material of machine elements. The bending fatigue tests are performed for sintered steel bend specimens and spur gears, which are notched by using a slicing blade. The fatigue test at a constant stress amplitude is performed by using an electrohydraulic servo-controlled pulsating tester Consequently, the S-N curves are obtained and the fatigue strength. is compared with flaw depth. Accordingly, this study presents the fatigue strength of sintered spur gears, the critical notch depth of sintered steel and the effects of flaw depth on the bending fatigue strength. The enhancement of fatigue strength due to carburized treatment is clarified.

  • The purpose of the present study is to investigate the statistical characteristics of m and C in the fatigue crack propagation law, da/dN=C(.DELTA.K)/sup m/ and to studies on the randomness of fatigue crack propagation and retardation behavior. Fatigue tests were perfomed on 32 CT specimens of SPV50 steel under the same one condition. First, the value of m and C were determined for each specimen, and all the data were analyzed statistically. second, the material's resistance to fatigue crack propagation is modeled as a stchastic process, which varies randomly along the crack path. The statistical analysis of the material resistance is performed with the data obtained by constant load controlled tests. Finally, retardation behavior was examined experimentally by using a CT specimen, and a retardation parameters were analyzed statistically.

  • In this paper, we deducted the missions with respect to Korea utility helicopter (KUH) and consist of the scenarios which describe proper purpose of KUH. And so developed fatigue load spectrum of KUH by applying Helix that is fatigue load spectrum for blade of articulated helicopter rotor system. The developed load spectrum is applied to fatigue analysis of blade by modeled finite element with stress-life method (S-N). And we compared the result of fatigue analysis to prior to Helix for the sake of verifying the load spectrum that we generated.

  • The dynamic fatigue behavior of alumina ceramics was observed at room temperature using four point bending system. The dynamic fatigue fracture strength and the dynamic fatigue lifetime were observed as a function of crosshead speed and the notch length. The notched specimen showed the smaller deviation in dynamic fatigue fracture strength than the unnotched specimen. The crack growth exponent n and the material constant A of the notched specimen could be represented as functions of the notch length. Fracture strength of the specimen calculated from the notch length, when the notch length was regarded as the crack size, was in good agreement with the measured 4 point bending strength. Fracture surface of the specimen showed the different fracture modes according to the crosshead speed. The four point flexural strength, fracture toughness, Young's modulus and Weibull modulus of the alumina were measured as 360 MPa, 3.91 MPa.m1/2, 159GPa, 17.64, respectively.

  • Although the transverse butt weld method with ceramic backing strip has been widely used in various industrial fields for its fabricational convenience, it is rarely used in offshore industries since the fatigue strength of the weld joint has not been proved sufficiently. This study conducted fatigue tests for series of butt weld specimens with horizontal (2G) and vertical (3G) welding positions in order to verify the fatigue strength compared to S-N curve by DNV (Det Norske Veritas), IIW (International Institute of Welding) and Eurocode 3. The difference of the 2G specimens and the 3G specimens are investigated in terms of angular distortion and the effect on the fatigue strength are analyzed.

  • This study is attempted to predict experimentally the fatigue crack propagation behavior of two-span beams with steel fibrous for various steel fibrous contents. The static tests and the fatigue tests were performed on a series of SFRC(steel fibrous reinforced concrete) to investigate the fatigue behavior of SFRC varying with the steel fibrous contents. Through this test, the diagonal cracking loads, ultimate loads, deflections, strains of concrete and steels. Fatigue crack length were measured by the eye-observation. As a result of test, A model for S-N relationship, and propagation life of fatigue crack of SFRC was proposed. The crack growth and failure of SFRC beams were studied.

  • In order to evaluate fatigue endurance for the rocker arm of a diesel engine, stress measurements were performed using the strain gages attached near the neck, where is one of the most critical region in the rocker arm, in variation of the engine speed. The fatigue life experiments were carried out on miniature specimens from the rocker arms. For evaluating the fatigue endurance of the rocker arm, the S-N data were compared with the stress analysis results through FEM analysis of the rocker arm. The effective stress of the neck region was determined 17.7MPa through FEM analysis of the rocker arm. Conclusively, on the basis of fatigue limit, the rocker arm has a safety factor of 2.8 or 3.4 from the stress measurement or FEM results, respectively.
