  • Statement of problem: Removable partial denture and complete denture often require denture base relines to improve the fit against the tissue-bearing mucosa because of gradual changes in edentulous ridge contours and resorption of underlying bone structure. Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the effect of surface design on bond strength of relining denture base resins to denture base acrylic resin. Materials and method: Heat curing resin(Lucitone 199, Dentsply U.S.A. and Vertex, Dentimex, Holland), self curing resin(Tokuso rebase, Tokuyama, Japan), and visible light curing resin(Triad, Dentsply, U.S.A.) were used in this study. The surface designs were classified as butt, bevel and rabbet joint and the bond strengths were measured by Universial Testing Machine (Zwick 2020, Zwick Co., Germany). Results and Conclusion: The obtained results from this study were as follows ; 1. The bond strength of Vertex resin was higher than those of Tokuso rebase and Triad. 2. The bond strength of rabbet and bevel joint was higher than that of butt joint. 3. The failure mode of Triad and Tokuso rebase was mainly adhesive, but cohesive failure was shown mainly in vertex.

  • The interaction of 1,3,5-trithian molecule with Ag(111) surface is studied employing Extended Huckel method. The Ag(111) surface is modeled by the three layer metal clusters composed of 43 Ag atoms. We assume that the 1,3,5-trithian is lying flat on Ag(111) surface in the chair conformation. The geometry of 1,3,5-trithian itself is assumed to be the same as in the gas phase, which is obtained through the AM1 SCF-MO calculation with full geometry optimization. The calculation for 3-fold site adsorption leads to the weakening of C-S bond, which is compatible with the observed 5 cm$^{-1}$ decrease of the C-S stretching frequency upon surface adsorption, while the on-top site adsorption leads to strengthening of C-S bond. The major component of the C-S bond of trithian is S $3p_{pi}\;(S\;3p_x+S\;3p_y)$ and therefore only the 3-fold site adsorption causes the weakening of this bond. In addition, it is found that the trithian molecule binds to the 3-fold site more strongly.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the bonding ability of two self etch systems to human primary and permanent enamel and the effect of additional acid etching time. Exfoliated, caries free human primary molar(n=65) and permanent molar extracted (n=65) were used. prepared enamel specimens were randomly divided into 2 test groups and a control group. The control group(n=10) were treated with 35% phosphoric acid gel and Scotchbond Multi-purpose adhesive. Experimental groups(self-etching systems) were subdivided into 6 groups(each n=10) according to additional etching time(0s, 5s, 10s, 15s, 20s, 30s). The result were as follows : 1) The shear bond strengths of the self-etching adhesives(Clearfil SE Bond, Adper Prompt L-pop) without additional etching were lower than control group(Scotch Bond Multipurpose). 2) Between the same self-etch adhesive groups, additional etched groups showed higher shear bond strength 3) There was no significant difference between primary and permanent enamel. In conclusion, bond strength of self-etch adhesives to enamel could be increased with additional etching.

  • Determination has been made of the kinetics of the reaction of benzyl arenesulfonates with pyridine in acetone. The substituent effects of the leaving groups in benzyl arenesulfonates are correlated by Hammett equations, with the exception of p-MeO and $p-NO_2$ groups, where the electron attracting substituents in the benzyl arenesulfonate increase the rate. The substituent effects of the leaving groups are as expected due to the nucleophilic attack of amine on the benzyl carbon atom. This can be understood in terms of changes in bond formation (C-N) and bond breaking (C-O) in the transition state with charges in electron-attracting ability of the substituents. The predicted substituent effects may indicate a small increase in bond formation and thus a tighter transition state, in benzyl p-bromobenzene sulfonate than in benzyl p-nitrobenzenesulfonate. Predicting made by Thornton concerning the substituent effects on $S_N2$ transition state structures agrees with the changes in bond formation and bond breaking.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bond strengths between IPS e.max Press and four different types of resin cements that often used for esthetic restoration. Disc shaped IPS e.max Press blocks(N=40, diameter: 12mm, thickness: 3mm) were fabricated according to the manufacture's instruction and cleaned with ultrasonic cleaner. They were embedded into an autopolymerizing acrylic resin. Fourty cylinder shaped resin block(Filtek Z350, diameter: 4.5mm, thickness: 3mm) were fabricated using a plastic tube. Each specimens were randomly divided into 4 experimental group and bonded each other using 4 different resin cements(Variolink II(light-cure), Variolink II(dual-cure), Calibra, Super-Bond C&B) according to the manufactures' recommendations. All the specimens were stored in normal saline at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours before test. Universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1mm/min was used to evaluate the shear bond strength. The data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA(P<.01). Multiple comparison was done by the Tukey HSD test. The shear bond strength of Super-Bond C&B to e.max was significantly lower than those of Calibra, Variolink II(light-cure), Variolink II(dual-cure) (P<.01). The shear bond strength of Calibra, Variolink II(light-cure), Variolink II(dual-cure) to e.max were not significantly different. The shear bond strengths of light-cure/dual-cure cement were higher than that of self-cure cement.

  • Statement of problem: The failure of adhesion between the resilient denture liner and the denture base is a serious problem in clinic. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of denture base resin surface pretreatments (mechanical and/or chemical) on the tensile bond strength between a resilient liner and processed denture resin. Material and method. Acrylic-based resilient liners (Soft liner; GC co., Japan & Coe-Soft; GC America Inc. USA) and silicone-based resilient liners (Mucosoft, Parkell Inc., USA & Dentusil; Bosworth co., USA) were used. Specimens in each soft lining material were divided two groups with or without mechanical pretreatment. Each denture base specimen received 1 of 4 chemical pretreatments including: (1) no treatment, (2) 30-s acetone treatment, (3) 15-s methylene chloride treatment, (4) 180-s methyl methacrylate treatment. All specimens were thermocycled and placed under tension until failure in a universal testing machine. Results: 1. Silicone-based resilient liners exhibited significantly higher tensile bond strengths than acrylic-based resilient liners (P<.05). 2. Grinding the denture base resin improved tensile bond strengths of silicone-based resilient liners, but reduced tensile bond strengths of acrylic-based resilient liners (P<.05). 3. In acrylic-based resilient liners, treating with acetone significantly increased the bond strength of Soft liner and treating with methyl methacrylate significantly increased the bond strength of Coe-Soft (P<.05). However they were not effective compared to silicone-based resilient liner. 4. In silicone-based resilient liners, treating with all chemical etchants significantly increased the bond strength of Mucosoft to denture base, and treating with methylene chloride and methyl methacrylate increased the bond strength of Dentusil to denture base (P<.05). Conclusion: Although chemical and mechanical pretreatments were not effective on tensile bond strength of acrylic-based resilent liner to denture base, treating the denture base resin surface with appropriate chemical etchants after mechanical pretreatment significantly increased the tensile bond strength of silicone-based resilient liner to denture base.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effect of incorporating nanoparticles of silver (NAg) and amorphous calcium phosphate (NACP) into a self-etching primer of a resin cement on the microtensile bond strength of dentin, regarding the proven antibacterial feature of NAg and remineralizing effect of NACP. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Flat, mid-coronal dentin from 20 intact extracted human third molars were prepared for cementation using Panavia F2.0 cement. The teeth were randomly divided into the four test groups (n=5) according to the experimental cement primer composition: cement primer without change (control group), primer with 1% (wt) of NACP, primer with 1% (wt) of physical mixture of NACP+Nag, and primer with 1% (wt) of chemical mixture of NACP+Nag. The resin cement was used according to the manufacturer's instructions. After storage in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 h, the bonded samples were sectioned longitudinally to produce $1.0{\times}1.0mm$ beams for micro-tensile bond strength testing in a universal testing machine. Failure modes at the dentin-resin interface were observed using a stereomicroscope. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc tests and the level of significance was set at 0.05. RESULTS. The lowest mean microtensile bond strength was obtained for the NACP group. Tukey's test showed that the bond strength of the control group was significantly higher than those of the other experimental groups, except for group 4 (chemical mixture of NACP and NAg; P=.67). CONCLUSION. Novel chemical incorporation of NAg-NACP into the self-etching primer of resin cement does not compromise the dentin bond strength.
