  • We have examined the applicability of f-k analysis to the GPR direct wave measurement for water content to characterize vadose zone condition. When the vadose zone consists of a dry surface layer over wet substratum, we obtained f-k spectra where most of the energy is bounded by the air and dry soil velocities. In this case, dry soil velocity was successfully estimated by using high frequency data. On the other hands, when wet soil overlies dry substratum, the f-k spectra show a contrasting response where most of the energy travels with the velocity bounded by dry and wet soil velocities. In this case, the radar waves are trapped and guided within wet soil layer, exhibiting velocity dispersion. By adopting modal propagation theory, we could formulae a simple inversion code to find two layer's dielectric constants as well as layer thickness. By inverting the velocity dispersion curve obtained from f-k spectra of synthetic modeling data, we could obtain good estimates of dielectric constants of each layer as well as first layer thickness. Moreover, we could obtain more accurate results by including the higher mode data. We expect this method will be useful to get the quantitative property of real subsurface when the field condition is similar.

  • It has been widely known that the seismic piezo-cone penetration test (SCPTu) is one of the most useful techniques for investigating the geotechnical characteristics such as static and dynamic soil properties. As practical applications in Korea, SCPTu was carried out at two sites in Busan and four sites in Incheon, which are mainly composed of alluvial or marine soil deposits. From the SCPTu waveform data obtained from the testing sites, the first arrival times of shear waves and the corresponding time differences with depth were determined using the cross-over method, and the shear wave velocity $(V_S)$ profiles with depth were derived based on the refracted ray path method based on Snell's law. Comparing the determined $V_S$ profile with the cone tip resistance $(q_t)$ profile, both trends of profiles with depth were similar. For the application of the conventional CPTu to earthquake engineering practices, the correlations between $V_S$ and CPTu data were deduced based on the SCPTu results. For the empirical evaluation of $V_S$ for all soils together with clays and sands which are classified unambiguously in this study by the soil behavior type classification index $(I_C)$, the authors suggested the $V_S-CPTu$ data correlations expressed as a function of four parameters, $q_t,\;f_s,\;\sigma'_{v0}$ and $B_q$, determined by multiple statistical regression modeling. Despite the incompatible strain levels of the downhole seismic test during SCPTu and the conventional CPTu, it is shown that the $V_S-CPTu$ data correlations for all soils, clays and sands suggested in this study is applicable to the preliminary estimation of $V_S$ for the soil deposits at a part in Korea and is more reliable than the previous correlations proposed by other researchers.

  • For accurate laboratory evaluations of soil deposits, it is essential that the samples are undisturbed. An artificial ground-freezing system is the one of the most effective methods for obtaining undisturbed samples from sand deposits. The objective of this study is to estimate the shear strengths and the characteristics of elastic waves of frozen-thawed and unfrozen specimens through the undrained triaxial compression test. For the experiments, Jumunjin standard sands are used to prepare frozen and unfrozen specimens with similar relative densities (60% and 80%). The water pluviation method is used to simulate the fully saturated condition under the groundwater table. When thawing the frozen specimens, the temperature is measured every minute. After the specimens are completely thawed, undrained triaxial compression tests are conducted using the same procedures as for the unfrozen specimens. During the triaxial tests (saturation, consolidation, and shear phase), compressional and shear waves are measured. The results show that the freeze-thaw process has minor effects on the peak deviatoric stress and shear strength values, and that the process does not affect the internal friction angle. The compressional wave velocity increases with increasing B-value to 1800 m/s in the saturation phase, but tends to remain constant in the process of consolidation and shearing. The shear wave velocity decreases with increasing B-value in the process of saturation, but changes velocity in accordance with the change in effective stress in the processes of consolidation and shearing. The compressional wave velocity has similar values regardless of the freeze-thaw process, but values of shear wave velocity are slighly lower in frozen-thawed specimens than in unfrozen specimens. This study is a preliminary experiment for estimating the shear strength and characteristics of elastic wave velocity in undisturbed frozen specimens that have been obtained using the artificial ground-freezing method.

  • In order to get geologic information necessary for underground installation of water pipe, seismic refraction profiling was applied to the southwest side of the Seomjin River which flows between Namwon-gun, Cholabuk-do and Gokseong-gun, Cholanam-do. Before obtaining the in-line refraction data, walkaway data were recorded with 1 m geophone interval and -36∼+36 m offset range. From the walkaway data, it is interpreted that a dry soil layer with the average velocity of 585 m/s covers wet sediments with the average velocity of 1,326 m/s. The second layer overlies basements nearly horizontally with the average velocity of 4,218 m/s. Refraction profiling of 220 m long with the geophone interval of 2 m is interpreted with the Generalized Reciprocal Method (GRM). Three layers are identified with average velocities of 688 m/s, 1,473 m/s, and 3,776 m/s, respectively. The depth to the bedrock impossible for ripping ranges between two extremes, 1.51∼2.43 m and 2.25∼3.54 m, depending upon thickness of the hidden layer. A typical shortcoming of refraction method, the hidden layer problem, prevents accurate estimation in depth of the second layer.

  • The static correction, which is classified into refraction based static correction and reflection based residual static correction, removes distortions caused by irregularities of thickness or velocity in near-surface. Generally, refraction statics is a time consuming process because of high dependence on the interpreter's analysis. Therefore, for huge 3D seismic data, automatic static correction which minimizes the interpreter's analysis is required. In this research, we introduce an efficient method of refraction static correction for land 3D seismic survey.

  • Laboratory measurement of compressional wave velocity for two piston cores has been carried out successfully. The cores penetrated into the Holocene mud deposit located just off the Pusan harbor. Differences between the mercury delay method using a mercury column and the time delay method utilizing a digital processing oscilloscope for the observed velocity are negligible. Thus, both methods can be used independently to determine the velocity of unconsolidated marine sediment. The core velocity is, however, always higher than the velocity calculated from the seismic profile. This result should be considered seriously to interprete a seismic profile, otherwise one may encounter systematic error in calculating sediment thickness.

  • Velocities of leaky surface acoustic waves (LSAW/sub s/) were measured by using a line-focus polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) transducer and compared with theoretically calculated ones. Isotropic materials of Cu, Al, fused quartz, and anisotropic one of Z-cut α-quartz crystal were used as specimens. The velocities were obtained by the separation time between wave components reflected directly from the surface of specimen and LSAW components according to the defocusing distance. The measured velocities well agree with the theoretical results within 1% error, and it was shown that the leaky pseudo-surface acoustic wave (LPSAW) as well as the LSAW propagates with the typical 6-fold anisotropy on the (0,0,1) surface of α-quartz.

  • Two-dimensional hydrodynamic analysis was performed to analyze the attenuating characteristics of shock waves generated by the detonation of the bulkhead initiator. Through the interlocking analysis between HNS and HMX stacking initiator and STS bulkhead, we have precisely simulated detonation growth and pressure wave attenuation phenomena. The free surface velocity at the surface of the bulkhead was measured for quantitative comparison with the test data by VISAR. As a result, it was confirmed that the pressure attenuating pattern of the shock wave exponentially decreased according to the bulkhead thickness. The observed inflection point at the particle velocity measured over time is due to the subsequent propagation of the shock wave due to the rapid spallation of the interface between the detonator and the bulkhead.
