  • In this paper, an oscillator using dielectric-rod loaded cavity resonators with HTS(High Temperature Superconductor) end-plates was presented. It was operated at X-band. A two port cavity resonator was incorporated into a basic feedback loop oscillator configuration. A rutile loaded cavity resonator with HTS thin film end-plates was used to provide the quality factor between $10^4$ and $10^6$. A parallel feedback oscillator was constructed with a dielectric loaded cavity resonator, an amplifier, and a directional coupler. At 300 K, the experimental results showed the phase noise of -108 dBc/Hz at a 100 kHz offset frequency. At 26 K, the results was -118.8 dBc/Hz at same offset frequency.

  • Photocatalytic degradation of trichloroethylene has been carried out with UV-illuminated $TiO_2$-coated pyrex reactor in gas phase. Three commercial $TiO_2$ oxides were used as catalysts. The effect of reaction conditions, initial concentration of trichloroethylene, concentration of oxidant and light intensity on the photocatalytic activity were examined. Anatase-type catalyst showed higher activity than rutile-type, but P-25 catalyst showed the highest activity. The degradation rate increased with the decrease of flow rate and initial trichloroethylene concentration. It was preferable to use air as an oxidant. In addition, reactants with the water vapor decreased the activity and the degradation rate increased with the increase of light intensity, but it was very low with solar light. Photocatalytic deactivation was not observed at low concentration of trichloroethylene.

  • In this study, glass-ceramics containing cordierite(2MgO$.$2Al$_2$O$_3$5SiO$_2$) as a major crystalline phase was prepared from MAS (MgO-Al$_2$O$_3$-SiO$_2$) glass system for the application to reflector. Glasses prepared with addition of TiO$_2$as a nucleating agent were crystallized by two-step heat treatment of nucleation and crystal growth. Then nucleation and crystal growth behavior were investigated and the influence of heat treatment schedule on the nature of crystal phases and the diffuse reflectance spectrum was investigated. As a result, cordierite and rutile were precipitated as a major crystalline phases for the glass-ceramics with the nucleation at 750$^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours and then crystallization at 1100$^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours, and this glass-ceramics showed the reflectance over 90% in 570∼2500nm specturm region.

  • The controlled Ti(CO2H5)4 hydrolysis reactions for the synthesis of Spherical Monodispersed Titania powders are described. Increasing the concentration of TEOT and the molar ratio of water to TEOT in alcohol solution decrease the reaction time and the particle size. The reaction time is delalyed by increasing the chain length and the number of carbon branches of alcohol as a solvent. The prepared powders with an average diameter of 0.8$\mu$ and the spherical monodispersed transfer to Rutile phase at 55$0^{\circ}C$.

  • Nanoporous $TiO_2$ films are commonly used as working electrodes in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). So far, there have been attempts to synthesize films with various $TiO_2$ nanostructures to increase the power-conversion efficiency. In this work, vertically aligned rutile $TiO_2$ nanorods were grown on fluorinated tin oxide (FTO) glass by hydrothermal synthesis, followed by deposition of an anatase $TiO_2$ film. This new method of anatase $TiO_2$ growth avoided the use of a seed layer that is usually required in hydrothermal synthesis of $TiO_2$ electrodes. The dense anatase $TiO_2$ layer was designed to behave as the electron-generating layer, while the less dense rutile nanorods acted as electron-transfer pathwaysto the FTO glass. In order to facilitate the electron transfer, the rutile phase nanorods were treated with a $TiCl_4$ solution so that the nanorods were coated with the anatase $TiO_2$ film after heat treatment. Compared to the electrode consisting of only rutile $TiO_2$, the power-conversion efficiency of the rutile-anatase hybrid $TiO_2$ electrode was found to be much higher. The total thickness of the rutile-anatase hybrid $TiO_2$ structures were around $4.5-5.0{\mu}m$, and the highest power efficiency of the cell assembled with the structured $TiO_2$ electrode was around 3.94%.

  • Understanding the thermodynamics and structural transformation during the Metal-Insulator Transition (MIT) is critical to better understand the underlying physical origin of phase transition in the vanadiumdioxide ($VO_2$). Here, through the temperature-dependent in-situ high resolutiontransmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and systematic electrical transport study, we have shown that the tunable MIT transition of $VO_2$ nanowires is strongly affected by interplay between strain and domain nucleation by ion beam irradiation. Surprsingly, we have also observed that the $VO_2$ rutile (R) metallic phase could form directly in a strain-induced metastable monoclinic (M2) phase. These insights open the door toward more systematic approaches to synthesis for $VO_2$ nanostructures in desired phase and to use for applications including ultrafast optical switching, smart window, metamaterial, resistance RAM and synapse devices.

  • High quality $VO_2$ thin films were successfully grown on GaN substrate by optimizing oxygen partial pressure during the growth using RF sputtering technique. The $VO_2$ thin film grown on GaN substrate exhibited an unusual metal insulator transition behavior, which was known to be observed only either in doped sample or under uniaxial stress. Raman spectra also confirmed that metal insulator transition occurred from monoclinic M1 to rutile R phase via monoclinic M2 phase with increasing temperature. We believe that large lattice mismatch between $VO_2$ and GaN substrate may cause M2 phase to be thermodynamically stable. Optical transmittance and its electrical switching behavior were carefully investigated to elucidate the underlying physics of its metal insulator transition behavior. This study may lead to a unique opportunity to better understand the growth mechanism of M2 phase dominant $VO_2$ thin films.

  • $TiO_2$films of rutile and anatase phase have been prepared on silica glass substrates by the sol-gel method using $Ti(i-OC_3H_7)_4$. The effect of additives on the polymorph of $TiO_2$film has been examined in view of degree of crystallization. Third-order nonlinear optical properties of the both film have been investigated by the third harmonic generation method. The measured 3rd order nonlinear optical susceptibility of rutile and anatase thin films were about $1.4{\times}10^{-12}$ and $9.7{\times}10^{-13}$ esu, respectively.

  • The effects of $B_2O_3$ addition on the low-temperature sintering behavior and microwave dielectric properties of $(Zn_{0.8}Mg_{0.2})TiO_3$ ceramic system were investigated. Highly dense samples were obtained at the sintering temperatures below $900^{\circ}C$. The $Q{\times}f_o$ values were determined by the microstructures and sintering shrinkages which are affected by the amount of $B_2O_3$ and sintering temperature. Temperature coefficient of resonance frequency($T_f$) changes to a positive value with increasing the amount of $B_2O_3$ due to the increased amount of rutile phase which is one of the reaction products between $(Zn_{0.8}Mg_{0.2})TiO_3$ and $B_2O_3$. For $6.19 moi.{\%}B_2O_3$-added $(Zn_{0.8}Mg_{0.2})TiO_3$ system, it exhibits ${\epsilon}_r$ = 23.5, $Q{\times}f_o$ = 53,000 GHz, and $T_f$ = 0 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ when sintered at $900^{\circ}C$ for 5 h.
