  • In order to make the IoT ecosystem more usable and friendly to general users, the interaction between the users and platforms/devices and its UX must be improved. In this study, a web-based rule engine system to help users intuitively interact with the various devices and services in IoE (Internet of Everything) platform is proposed. The proposed system consists of web interfaces and UI components for creating and managing rule-based scenarios using sensors, actuators, and external services in an intuitive way. Also, a rule management module for automatically translating the rules from the web interface into Nools rule engine compatible ones is proposed. Finally, we show the usability and feasibility of the proposed system by demonstration of rule-based use cases of IoT devices and external services.

  • Rule set is an important step which impacts significantly on accuracy of object-oriented classification result. Therefore, this paper proposes a rule set to extract land cover from Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery acquired in Donganh, Hanoi, Vietnam. The rules were generated to distinguish five classes, namely river, pond, residential areas, vegetation and paddy. These classes were classified not only based on spectral characteristics of features, but also indices of water, soil, vegetation, and urban. The study selected five indices, including largest difference index max.diff; length/width; hue, saturation and intensity (HSI); normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and ratio vegetation index (RVI) based on membership functions of objects. Overall accuracy of classification result is 0.84% as the rule set is used in classification process.

  • An adaptive bone remodeling is simulated by using the cellular automata (CA) method. It is assumed that bone tissue consist of bone marrow, osteoclast, osteoblast cell or osteoprogenitor cell. Two types of local rule are adopted; those are the metabolism rule and adaptive bone formation rule. The metabolism rule is based on the interactions of cells and the bone formation rule is based on the adaptation against the mechanical stimulus. The history of load and memory of mechanical stimulus are also considered in the local rules. As a result, the pattern of distribution of the bone tissue is dynamically adequate and it is similar to intact cancellous bone.

  • One of the most difficult and time-consuming stages in the development of the knowledge-based system is a knowledge acquisition. A splitting algorithm is developed to infer a rule-tree which can be converted to a rule-typed knowledge. A market segmentation may be performed in order to establish market strategy suitable to each market segment. As the sales data of a product market is probabilistic and noisy, it becomes necessary to prune the rule-tree-at an acceptable level while generating a rule-tree. A splitting algorithm is developed using the pruning measure based on a total amount of information gain and the measure of existing algorithms. A user can easily adjust the size of the resulting rule-tree according to his(her) preferences and problem domains. The algorithm is applied to a market segmentation problem of a medium-large computer market. The algorithm is illustrated step by step with a sales data of a computer market and is analyzed.

  • This paper considers a fault accommodation problem for inertial navigation systems (INS) that have redundant inertial sensors such as gyroscopes and accelerometers. It is wellknown that the more sensors are used, the smaller the navigation error of INS is, which means that the error covariance of the position estimate becomes less. Thus, when it is decided that double faults occur in the inertial sensors due to fault detection and isolation (FDI), it is necessary to decide whether the faulty sensors should be excluded or not. A new accommodation rule for double faults is proposed based on the error covariance of triad-solution of redundant inertial sensors, which is related to the navigation accuracy of INS. The proposed accommodation rule provides decision rules to determine which sensors should be excluded among faulty sensors. Monte Carlo simulation is performed for dodecahedron configuration, in which case the proposed accommodation rule can be drawn in the decision space of the two-dimensional Cartesian coordinate system.

  • To compute the expected travel time of storage and retrieval (S/R) machine in automated warehousing systems most of the previous studies assumed that equal number of rack openings are required regardless of the nature of storage assignment rules. It is known that randomized storage assignment rule usually needs less storage to space than needed for full turnover-based assignment rule. The objective of this paper is compute the expected travel time of each assignment rule more equitably by taking into account the storage space required for each rule. First, the rack storage space is determined which satisfies a given service level. Then based on the standard Economic Ordering Quantity model, trade-off analysis is carried out which relates the storage space to the expected travel time of the S/R machine. Finally, example problems are solved to compare the performance of each assignment rule under varying conditions of demand pattern and service level.

  • In the adaptive fuzzy sliding mode control, from a set of a fuzzy IF-THEN rules adaptive fuzzy sliding mode control whose parameters are adjusted on-line according to some adaptation laws is constructed for the purpose of controlling the plant to track a desired trajectory. Most of the research works in nonlinear controller design using fuzzy systems consider the affine system with fixed grid-rule structure based on system state availability. The fixed grid-rule structure makes the order of the controller big unnecessarily, hence the on-line fuzzy rule structure and fuzzy observer based adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controller is proposed to solve system state availability problems. Therefore, adaptive laws of fuzzy parameters for state observer and fuzzy rule structure are established implying whole system stability in the sense of Lyapunov.

  • Customer service process is one of the most important processes in today's competitive business environment. Among the various activities of customer service process, equipment malfunction diagnosis activity should be performed fast and accurately. When a customer calls the service center and reports the observed symptoms, he/she describes them in layman's terms. Therefore, the customer-reported symptoms have not been considered helpful information for service representatives. However, in order to perform diagnosis activity fast and accurately, we need to make use of the customer-reported symptoms actively. In this research, we developed three systems called R-EMD (Rule-based Equipment Malfunction Diagnostic system), C-EMD (Case-based Equipment Malfunction Diagnostic system) and R&C-EMD (Rule & Case-based Equipment Malfunction Diagnostic system), each of which diagnoses equipment malfunctions using the customer-reported symptoms. R&C-EMD is a hybrid system that utilizes both rule-based and case-based technologies. The diagnosis rules used in R&C-EMD and R-EMD were not acquired from service manuals or interviews with service representatives. Rater, we extracted them directly from the past diagnosis cases based on symptoms' frequencies. By this way, we were able to overcome the knowledge acquisition bottleneck. Using the real 100 malfunction diagnosis cases, we evaluated the performances of R&C-EMC, R-EMD and C-EMD in terms of speed and accuracy. In diagnosis time, R&C-EMD took longer than R-EMD and shorter than C-EMD. However, R&C-EMC was the best in accuracy.
