  • We investigated the horizontal alignment properties such as surface morphology, pretilt angle, and polar and azimuthal anchoring energy of organic alignment material-coated surface treated by ion beam. In this investigation the energy and incident angle of ion beam were changed. We also fabricated an in-plane switching (IPS) cell by ion beam alignment. The results showed similar voltage-transmittance characteristics to those of a rubbed cell and better dark state.

  • New copolyimides containing nitrile side group were synthesized from copolymerization of pyromellitic dianhydride, m-phenylene diamine and 3,5-diaminobenzonitrile and subsequent thermal imidization of the resulting poly(amic acid). Crystallinity, glass transition temperature and initial decomposition temperature of copolyimides were almost identical to those of homo polyimide prepared from PMDA and m-PDA. Change of pretilt angle induced by the orientation layer of resulting copolyimide was investigated by using a nitrile-containg nematic liquid crystal cell after rubbing. As the content of polar nitrile group was increased in the copolymer, pretilt angle was increased from $3.65^{\circ}$ to $6.49^{\circ}$. The mechanism of this was speculated as the dipolar interaction between the liquid crystal and nitrile groups in copolyimide.

  • A novel wide viewing angle flexible liquid crystal display will be demonstrated. The crossed matrix-type micro-cell structure was adopted in this design. The LC domains were divided into four different tilted directions by the combination effect of pixel fringe field and crossed matrix type micro-cell. It can create four domains without rubbing process and form the cell gap without spacer. For flexible color fabrication, a novel inkjet printing technology is adopted. This cost effective wide viewing angle color flexible LCD technology can be a good solution for high performance flexible LCD.

  • In this paper, we obtained that the monodomain alignment of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) increases with increasing irradiation time with linearly polarized ultraviolet (LPUV) light irradiation on polyimide (PI) surfaces. It was found that the monodomain alignment of NLC is obtained in a cell with normally LPUV light irradiated on PI surface at 30 min. and then oblique LPUV is secondly irradiated on PI surfaces rotated by $90^{\circ}$. The pretilt angle of NLC is generated about $2.5^{\circ}$ with oblique angle of $60^{\circ}$ and then decreased with increasing the oblique angle of IN light irradiation. It is considered that the pretilt angle of NLC is attributed to the photo-depolymerization of polymer with the oblique angle of UV light. The voltage-transmittance and response time characteristics of photo-aligned twisted nematic (TN)-LCD with UV light irradiation time of 60 min. were almost same in comparison with rubbing treated TN-LCD.

  • The washing effects on pretilt angle generation in a nematic liquid crystal (NLC), 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) on a rubbed polyimide (PI) surface with trifluoromethyl moiety have been successfully studied. The pretilt angle of 5CB is increased by the washing process on the rubbed PI surface. The surface tension on the rubbed PI surface increases with the rubbing strength RS and then saturated above RS: 150 mm. The pretilt angle of 5CB for all washing processes on the rubbed PI surface decreases with the surface tension. We have found that the pretilt angle of 5CB on the rubbed PI surface may be attributed van der walls (VDW) dispersion interaction between the LC molecules and the polymer surfaces having trifluoromethyl moieties.

  • Blending effects for generating a pretilt angle in nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy on the blended polyimide (PI) of homeotropic and homogeneous alignment surface were studied. Also, we investigated the EO performances for the advanced VA-$\pi$ cell using this homeotropic blended PI surface. A many decrease of tilt angle on the polymer surface to blend homeotropic PI and homogeneous PI with side chain type was measured, and the tilt angle decreased as blended ratio and rubbing strength increase. The blended effects for generating a pretilt angle were clearly observed, and the many decrease of tilt angle can be achieved by using the blended PI surface. The electro-optical (EO) characteristics using the advanced VA-$\pi$ cell using the homeotropic blended PI surface than that of conventional VA cell can be improved. We suggest that the developed advanced VA-$\pi$ cell on a homeotropic blended PI surface is a promising technique for the achievement of a fast response time, and a high contrast ratio.

  • Effect of alignment layers on pretilt angle generation and electrical characteristics in nematic liquid crystal(NLC) by using photo-alignment techniques on polyimide (PI) surface with side chain were studied. The generated pretilt angle of the NLC on rubbed PI surface with 1-layer is almost the same as that of the 2-layers. However, the generated pretilt angle of the NLC on photo-induced PI surface with 2-layers is larger than that of the 1-layer. Therefore, the pretilt angle of the NLC on photo-induced PI surface is attributed to surface roughness due to photo-depolymerization of the polymer with UV light irradiation on PI surface. Next we observed the same characteristics of voltage-transmittance (V-T) and response time for 1- and 2-layers on PI surface. We also observed the same voltage holding ratio (VHR) characteristics for 1- and 2-layers on photo-aligned PI surface. Consequently, we suggest that the VHR of photo-aligned TN-LCD is higher than that of the rubbing-aligned TN-LCD.

  • We investigated the generation of high pretilt angle for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) in the cell with slanted non-polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on two kinds of the polyimide (PI) film. It was shown that the monodomain alignment in NLC is obtained in the cell with slanted non-polarized UV light irradiation on PI surface. The pretilt angle of NLC is generated about 3 degrees in the cell with slanted non-polarized UV light irradiation with 70 degrees on PI surface without side chain. But, the pretilt angle of NLC is generated about 1 degree in the cell with slanted non-polarized UV light irradiation with 80 degrees on PI surface with side chain. We consider that the pretilt angle generation in NLC is attributted to anisotropic dispersion force between the LC molecular and the PI surface.

  • A driving mechanism and excellent features for an in-plane switching twisted nematic liquid crystal mode (IT mode) that could possibly improve the viewing-angle and color shift characteristics and the cell gap error tolerance is proposed. .It is important that the surface azimuthal anchoring strength of the liquid crystal cell differs at the upper and lower substrates. Furthermore. as a rubbing-free LCD. amorphously aligned in-plane switching twisted nematic mode (a-IT mode) is also demonstrated.

  • The potential of non-rubbing technology for applying to display devices was demonstrated by irradiating a high density argon ion beam (IB) on a polyimide (PI) as a liquid crystal alignment layer. The superior electro-optical characteristics were obtained, compared to rubbed PI, Although the low pretilt angle was created on the IB irradiated PI.
