This study predicts the of the hysteretic friction of a rubber block sliding on an SMA asphalt road. The friction of filled rubber on a rough surface is primarily determined by two elements:the viscoelasticity of the rubber and the multi-scale perspective asperities of the road. The surface asperities of the substrate exert osillating forces on the rubber surface leading to energy dissipation via the internal friction of the rubber when rubber slides on a hard and rough substrate. This study defines the power spectra at different length scales by using a high-resolution surface profilometer, and uses rubber and road surface samples to conduct friction tests. I consider in detail the case when the substrate surface has a self affine fractal structure. The theory developed by Persson is applied to describe these tests through comparison with the hysteretic friction coefficient relevant to the energy dissipation of the viscoelastic rubber attributable to cyclic deformation. The results showed differences in the absolute values of predicted and measured friction, but with high correlation between these values. Hence, the friction prediction model is an appropriate tool for separating the effects of each factor. Therefore, this model will contribute to clearer understanding of the fundamental principles of rubber friction.
The basic factor that affect wear performance is the wear characteristics, which come from sliding friction between rubber compound and road. Thus, this study focused on friction and wear of rubber. This paper briefly explain some characteristics of friction and wear referring to the papers on wear of rubber that scholars researched on. Research activities to predict the performance of the rubber wear is also explained.
This paper presents the analysis of friction master curves for a sliding elastomer on rough granite. The hysteresis friction is calculated using an analytical model that considers the energy spent during the local deformation of the rubber due to surface asperities. The adhesion friction is also considered for dry friction prediction. The viscoelastic modulus of the rubber compound and the large-strain effective modulus are obtained from dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). We accurately demonstrate the large strain of rubber that contacts with road substrate using the GW theory. We found that the rubber block deforms approximately to 40% strain. In addition, the viscoelastic master curve considering nonlinearity (at 40% strain) is derived based on the above finding. As viscoelasticity strongly depends on temperature, it can be assumed that the influence of velocity on friction is connected to the viscoelastic shift factors gained from DMA using the time-temperature superposition. In this study, we apply these shift factors to measure friction on dry granite over a velocity range for various temperatures. The measurements are compared to simulated hysteresis and adhesion friction using the Kluppel friction theory. Although friction results in the low-speed band match well with the simulation results, there are differences in the predicted and experimental results as the velocity increases. Thus, additional research is required for a more precise explanation of the viscoelastic material properties for better prediction of rubber friction characteristics.
Rubber friction properties include adhesion friction characteristics of the interface, hysteresis friction characteristics originating from repeated rubber deformations, and cohesion friction characteristics due to wear and tear. Cohesion friction is generally sufficiently small (< 3%) that it can be ignored, whereas adhesion friction has a relatively large contribution of 15%, but has not been investigated thoroughly. Therefore, through an adhesion friction study, the adhesion mechanism was examined and the relationship between friction characteristics and adhesion friction on dry surfaces was derived. The wet grip characteristics of tread rubber are fully described by the hysteresis characteristics of tires, but friction characteristics on dry roads are difficult to determine without adhesion factors. The results presented herein demonstrate that the combination of hysteresis and adhesion properties in the tread rubber sufficiently explained the characteristics of the dry grip. Based on the results of this study, technologies will be developed to determine the key factors governing adhesion friction characteristics and improve dry tire braking performance.

On the basis of the use of shoes, the outsole, which is mainly made of rubber, has various characteristics. The most important of these characteristics is abrasion resistance and friction. Generally, the abrasion resistance can be improved by adding more reinforcing filler such as silica to the rubber; however, the friction force drops. Owing to these problems, rubber having excellent abrasion resistance and rubber having excellent frictional force are blended. In this study, various characteristics, including wear resistance and friction, were evaluated by blending NBR/SBR or NBR/BR mixture with high wear resistance and CIIR with high friction. The CIIR was increased up to 60 phr, whereas the friction wear characteristics were rapidly changed in the NBR/CIIR blend ratio from 75:15 to 60:30.

Rolling-sliding friction was investigated for three SBR (styrene-butadiene rubber) specimens including silica-filled, HAF carbon black-filled, and SAF carbon black-filled SBR. When a rubber wheel was rolled against a glass disk, the coefficient of friction varied with the slip ratios. The coefficient of friction for the silica-tilled SBR showed the highest value of the rubber specimens examined under various slip ratios. The contact areas of silica-filled SBR were larger than those of the carbon black-filled SBRs, as indicated the modulus of the silica-filled SBR showing the lowest value. The contact area during rolling-sliding friction was always smaller than those during the static contact. The friction force at the unit contact area for the silica-filled SBR under braking and driving was higher than those of carbon black-filled SBRs.
Multi-Surface (MS) treatment is a new technique of surface treatment to reduce the static friction factor on the surface of rubber. MS treatments include 4 methods which names are MS-V (UV-irradiation on the rubber surface), MS-M (doing the chemical reaction with double bond of rubber), MS-Q (dilution of rubber surface by silicone surfactant), and MS-P (coating and heating of rubber surface). The experiment and test of every MS-treatment had been carried out using acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR), ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM), and chlorosulphonated rubber (CSM) as rubber materials. It had introduced the steps of every MS-treatment process and the result of the properties test. From the research, it was found that the best method was MS-V treatment because it suited all the samples and the effect was obviously.
This paper presents the hysteresis friction of a sliding elastomer on various types of surfaces. The hysteresis friction is calculated by means of an analytical model which considers the energy spent by the local deformation of the rubber due to surface asperities. By establishing the fractal character of the surfaces, the contribution to rubber friction of roughness at different length scales is accounted for. High resolution surface profilometer is used in order to calculate the main three surface descriptors and the minimal length scale that can contribute to hysteresis friction. The results show that this friction prediction can be used in order to characterize in an elegant manner the surface morphology of various surfaces and to quantify the friction coefficient of sliding rubber as a function of surface roughness, load and speed.
The friction and wear of tire determined by frictional behavior of tire tread that translate driving force, cornering force and braking force between automobile and road as a result of frictional behavior of each tread block. The tire tread block is representative case of rubber block doing frictional behavior. In this paper, frictional behavior of rubber block under compressive force and shear force was analytically obtained by using slip starting position parameter instead of friction coefficient which is uncertain to express exact value between rubber and other surfaces yet. And local coefficients of friction were calculated as a function of compressive force, shear force, shear modulus of rubber, shape factor and slip starting position.
