It was proposed that Ru(II)[(1,10-phenanthroline)$_2$dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine ([Ru(phen)$_2$DPPZ]$^{2+}$)complexes and 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) simultaneously bind to poly[d(A-T)$_2$] (Biophysics. J. 2003, 85, 3865). Förster type resonance energy transfer from excited DAPI to [Ru(phen)2DPPZ]$^{2+}$ complexes was observed. In this study, we synthesized $\Delta$- and $\wedge$-[Ru(phenanthroline)$_2$dipyrido[3,2-a:2’3’c]6-azaphenazine] ([Ru(phen)$_2$DPAPZ]$^{2+}$) at which the DNA intercalating ligand DPPZ was replaced and we studied its binding properties to poly[d(A-T)$_2$] in the presence and absence of DAPI using polarized spectroscopy and fluorescence techniques. All the spectroscopic properties of the [Ru(phen)$_2$DPAPZ]$^{2+}$-poly[d(A-T)$_2$] complex were the same in the presence and absence of DAPI that blocks the minor groove of polynucleotide, suggesting both $\Delta$- and $\wedge$-[Ru(phen)$_2$DPAPZ]$^{2+}$ complexes are located at the major groove of poly[d(A-T)2]. On the other hand, in contrast with [Ru(phen)$_2$DPPZ]$^{2+}$, both $\Delta$- and $\wedge$-[Ru(phen)$_2$DPAPZ]$^{2+}$ exhibited almost twice the efficiency in the fluorescence quenching of DAPI that binds at the minor groove of poly[d(A-T)$_2$]. This observation indicates that the efficiency of the Förster type resonance energy transfer can be controlled by a small change in the chemical structure of the intercalated ligand.
[Ru(bpy)$_2$(dppz)]$^2$$^{+}$ (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, dppz = dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine)(RuBD), a long-lifetime metal-ligand complex displays photophysical properties including long lifetime, polarized emission, and very little background fluorescence. To further show the usefulness of this luminophore(RuBD) for probing nucleic acid dynamics, its intensity and anisotropy decays when bound to tRN $A^{val}$ were examined using frequency-domain fluorometry with a blue light-emitting diode(LED)as the modulated light source. Unexpectedly much longer mean lifetime was obtained at 4$^{\circ}C$(<$\tau$>=178.3 ns) as compared to at $25^{\circ}C$(<$\tau$>=117.0 ns), suggesting more favorable conformation of tRN $A^{val}$ for RuBD when intercalated at 4$^{\circ}C$. The anisotropy decay data showed longer rotational correlation times at 4$^{\circ}C$(52.7 and 13.0 ns) than at $25^{\circ}C$ (32.9 and 10.3 ns). The presence of two rotational correlation times suggests that RuBD reveals both local and overall rotational motion of tRN $A^{val}$. Due to long lifetime of RuBD and small size of tRN $A^{val}$, very low steady-state anisotropy values were observed, 0.048 and 0.036 at 4 and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. However, a clear difference in the modulated anisotropy values was seen between 4 and $25^{\circ}C$. These results indicate that RuBD can be useful for studying hydrodynamics of small nucleic acids such as tRN $A^{val}$.^{val}$.>.$.>.
The syntheses and reactivities with olefins of $[Ru^{II}(L_3)(L_2)OH_2]^{2+}$$[L_3$= 2,6-bis(N-pyrazolyl)pyridine(bpp), 2,6-bis(3,5-dimethyl-N-pyrazolyl)pyridine $(Me_4bpp);\;L_2$= 2,2'-bipyridine(bpy), 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine $(Me_2bpy)$] are described. Their spectral and redox properties in aqueous solution were investigated. Evidence for each one electron redox process for the $Ru^{IV}-Ru^{III}$ and $Ru^{III}-Ru^{II}$ couples has been obtained. Oxidation of $[Ru^{II}(bpp)(bpy)OH_2]^{2+}$ with $Ce^{IV}$ gave $[Ru^{IV}(bpp)(bpy)O]^{2+}$. The $[Ru^{IV}$= 0 complex is paramagnetic $({\mu}_{eff}=2.82)$ and the complexes $[Ru(L_3)(L_2)OH_2]^{2+}$ are robust catalysts for the oxidation of styrene, cyclohexene, and cyclooctene with cooxidant such as NaOCl. Product distributions and selectivities are discussed by varying the number of the substituted-methyl group in the ring.
Microperoxidase 8 (MP8) has been prepared by sequential hydrolysis of cytochrome C by pepsin and trypsin. This five-coordinated heme-octapetide fragment provides a uniques structure to evaluate the electronic coupling efficiency to the iron through axial position and porphyrin edge. At alkali pH, Ru(bpy)2(im)22+ is completely quenched in AcMP8Ru complex . Transient kinetics measurement showed the decay rate to be ~1 $\times$1012S-1. Ruthenium bipyridine complex with a carboxyl group substituted bipyridine has been prepared adn reacted with MR 8 to yield N-terminus bound RuMP8 complex. The luminescence decay rate has been measured as 1 $\times$109S-1. By using semiclassical electron transfer theory, we found the electron transfer efficiency through axial positioin of iron prophyrin is as good through prophyrin edge.

$[Ru(bpy)_2(dppz)]^2+$ (bpy=2,2'-bipyfidine, dppz=dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine) (RuBD), a long-lifetime metal-ligand complex, displays favorable photophysical properties. These include long lifetime, polarized emission, but no significant fluorescence from the complex that is not bound to DNA. To show the usefulness of this luminophore (RuBD) for probing the bending and torsional dynamics of nucleic acids, its intensity and anisotropy decays when intercalated into supercoiled and relaxed pTZ18U plasmids were examined using frequency-domain fluorometry with a blue light-emitting diode (LED) as the modulated light source. The mean lifetimes for the supercoiled plasmids (< $\tau$ >=148 ns) were somewhat shorter than those for the relaxed plasmids (< $\tau$ >=160 ns). This suggests that the relaxed plasmids were shielded more efficiently from water. The anisotropy decay data also showed somewhat shorter slow rotational correlation times for supercoiled plasmids (288 ns) than for the relaxed plasmids (355 ns). The presence of two rotational correlation times suggests that RuBD reveals both the bending and torsional motions of the plasmids. These results indicate that RuBD can be useful for studying both the bending and torsional dynamics of mucleic acids.
The metal-ligand complex, $[Ru(phen)_2(dppz)]^{2+}$ (phen=1,10-phenanthroline, dppz=dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine) (RuPD), was used as a spectroscopic probe for studying nucleic acid dynamics. The RuPD complex displays a long lifetime and a molecular light switch property upon DNA binding due to shielding of its dppz ligand from water. To show the usefulness of this luminophore (RuPD) for probing nucleic acid dynamics, we compared its intensity and anisotropy decays when intercalated into the $tRNA^{val}$ and pBluescript (pBS) II SK(+) phagemid through a comparison with ethidium bromide (EB), a conventional nucleic acid probe. We used frequency-domain fluorometry with a blue light-emitting diode (LED) as the modulated light source. The mean lifetime for the $tRNA^{val}$ (<${\tau}$> = 166.5 ns) was much shorter than that for the pBS II SK(+) phagemid (<${\tau}$> = 481.3 ns), suggesting a much more efficient shielding from water by the phagemid. Because of their size difference, the anisotropy decay data showed a much shorter rotational correlation times for the $tRNA^{val}$ (99.9 and 23.6 ns) than for the pBS II SK(+) phagemid (968.7 and 39.5 ns). These results indicate that RuPD can be useful for studying nucleic acid dynamics.
Direction of intercalation to DNA of the planar dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine ligands (dppz) of a bis-Ru(II) complex namely, $[Ru(1,10-phenanthroline)_2dipyrido[3,2-a:2^{\prime},3^{\prime}-c]phenazine]^{2+}$ linkered by a 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane, was investigated by probing the behavior of 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) that bound deep in the minor groove. Bis-intercalation of DPPZ resulted in a little blue shift and hyperchromism in DAPI absorption band, and a large decrease in DAPI fluorescence intensity which accompined by an increase in the dppz emission intensity. Diminishing the intenisty of the positive induced circular dichroism (CD) and linear dichroism (LD) were also observed. These spectral changes indicated that insertion of dppz ligand caused the change of the binding mode of DAPI, which probably moved to the exterior of DNA from the minor groove and interacted with the phospghate groups of DNA by electrostatic interaction. At the surface of DNA, DAPI binds at the phosphate groups of DNA by electrostatic attraction. Consequently, this observation indicated that the dppz ligand intercalated from the minor groove.
A.C. impedance properties of $RuO_2$ based thick film resistors which having different resistivity value (DuPont 1721 : $100{\Omega}$/ sq., 1741 : $10K{\Omega}$/sq.) were investigated using by impedance analyzer. In case of lower resistivity 1721 system, the complex impedance was composed nearly R component for all speciman sintered at above $600^{\circ}C$, and the frequency dependancy on impedance was not affected very much up to 5MHz and again gradually increase with increasing the frequency. In case of higher resistivity 1741 resistor system, impedance properties were very depandant on sintering temperature. When sintering temperature was $600^{\circ}C$, the complex impedance plot shows a vertical line, which correspond to lone capacitance equivalant circuit, and the impedance linearly decreased with increasing frequency. In case of speciman sintered at $700-900^{\circ}C$, the complex impedance plot shows semi-circular are correspond to a lumped RC combination, and the impedance shows constant value to 5MHz, again decreased with increasing frequency. But the complex impedance behavior of speciman sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ was shows the equivalent circuit correspont to parallel combined LCR component, and the impedance was not varied with frequency.
Three different phosphonated trisbipyridine ruthenium complexes, [(4-CH3-4'-CH2PO(OH)2-2,2'-bipyridine)- (bpy)2Ru]·(PF6)2 (Ru-P1), [(4-CH3-4'-CH2PO(OH)2-2,2'-bipyridine)3Ru]·(PF6)2 (Ru-P2), and [(4,4'-CH2PO- (OH)2-2,2'-bipyridine)3Ru]·(PF6)2 (Ru-P3) were synthesized and their photochemical and electrochemical properties were studied. These ruthenium complexes were strongly adsorbed on the surface of the layered metal oxide semiconductor K4Nb6O17 that was partially acid-exchanged and sensitized up to pH 10, while the carboxylated ruthenium complex, (4,4'-COOH-2,2'-bipyridine)3Ru·Cl2 (Ru-C) that was previously studied was sensitized only below pH 4. The visible light water reduction at K4Nb6O17 that was internally platinized and sensitized by these phosphonated Ru-complexes was comparatively studied using a reversible electron donor iodide.
