Experimental Performance Evaluation of BACnet MS/TP Protocol

  • BACnet is a standard data communication protocol especially designed for building automation and control networks. BACnet uses the Master-Slave/Token-Passing (MS/TP) protocol as one of its field-level networks. In this study, the performance of the BACnet MS/TP protocol is evaluated using an experimental model. The network performance is investigated and evaluated in terms of token rotation time and round trip time. The experimental results show that the performance of the MS/TP network is heavily influenced by the network traffic load, the assignment of MS/TP node address and the network configuration parameter called $N_{max_info-frames}$. Based on the experimental results, simple practical designing guidelines for BACnet MS/TP network systems are also proposed.

  • 우리는 하이퍼큐브 구조를 위한 효율적인 분산 대칭 상호 배제 알고리즘을 제안 한다. 제안된 알고리즘의 기본 개념은 하이퍼큐브에 메쉬를 논리적으로 삽입 하는 기법에 기초를 두고 있다. 그리고 제안하는 알고리즘의 성능을 Gupta의 알고리즘과 비교하였다. 성능 비교 결과 최소 왕복 지연은 Gupta의 알고리즘과 같고, 평균 블락킹 지연은 Gupta의 알고리즘 보다 약간 길고, 그리고 임계 자원 액세스당 필요한 제어 메세지 갯수는 Gupta의 알고리즘 보다 작음을 알 수 있었다.

  • The paper presents and analyzes two efficient burst-level bandwidth reservation protocols for multi-hop ATM Local Area Networks. With the tell-and-wait (TNW) protocol and the tell-and-go (TNG) protocol[6], a negative acknowledgmen(NACK) message representing the bandwidth starvation on a switch on the source-destnation path can be always sent by a destination. We note that the protocols waste more bandwidth as the round-trip delay increases, since the switches on the path must reserve the bandwidth until the NACK will arrive. Based on this pitfall, the proposed protocols allow and ATM node, rather than a destination node to send a NACK. This allowance can save the needless bandwidth wastage. Using the thinned load approximation method, we show the proposed protocols have good performance and practical simplicity. Thus, the proposed protocols may be candidates for the ABR service in multi-hop ATM LANs and ATM WANs.

타임아웃 패턴에 기반한 TCP 혼잡 제어 (TCP Congestion Control Based on Timeout Patterns)

  • This paper infers two patterns of timeout from the characteristics of TCP Reno and confirms the existence of the patterns by conducting actual experiments. All timeouts can be classified into either of these patterns by using the history of RTT value. Based on the observed patterns, the paper proposes two algorithms to improve the performance of TCP Reno. Experimental results show that, when compared with TCP Reno, the proposed algorithms improve the bandwidth utilization by 3 to 12 percent. The paper provides good examples of how timeout-based and delay-based congestion control can efficiently work together.

  • In this paper, we propose a new multiple access scheme for VSAT(Very Small Aperture Terminal) data communications. The proposed scheme has better performance in terms of delay throughput than Controlled Multiaccess Scheme which has excellent performance. The proposed scheme use the spare reservation method, adaptation method to offered load, and fixed bandwidth reservation method. In this paper, we analyze the performance using simple queueing model and present the simulation results. When network traffic is very low, the new scheme and the controlled multiaccess scheme have almost the same access delay characteristic. As the network load becomes higher, the new scheme's access delay gain becomes larger. Futhermore, even when the network traffic is very high it is possible to access satellite link within the delay similar to one round-trip delay. In addition to access delay performance enhancement, the new scheme has facility that supports fixed bandwidth reservation. So it shows more enhanced performance in the environment that stream traffic is dominant such as in VSAT communication environment.

A Cost-Effective Rate Control for Streaming Video for Wireless Portable Devices

  • We present a simple and cost effective rate control scheme for streaming video over a wireless channel by using the information of mobile devices' buffer level. To prevent buffer fullness and emptiness at receivers, the server should be able to adjust sending rate according to receivers' buffer status. We propose methods to adjust sending rate based on the buffer level and discrete derivative of the buffer occupancy. To be compatible with existing network protocols, we provide methods to adjust sending rate by changing the inter-packet delay (IPD) at the server side. At every round-trip time, adjustments of sending rate are made in order to achieve responsiveness to sudden changes of buffer availabilities. A series of simulations and the prototype system showed that the proposed methods did not cause buffer overflows and it can maintain smoother rate control and react to bandwidth changes promptly.

  • Peer-to-Peer system has emerged as a popular model aiming at further utilizing Internet information and resources, complementing the available client-server services. However, the mechanism of peers randomly choosing logical neighbors without any knowledge about underlying physical location aware topology can cause serious performance degradation. In this paper, we consider the network distance between peers so that it helps peers select neighbors located at the nearest when they exchange queries for sharing of resources. To reduce the unnecessary signaling traffic and delay of query exchange, we propose a location aware topology based Hybrid P2P system. This system calculates the network distance which combines the direct measurement such as RTT (Round Trip Time) with geographic space of peers using IP address

An Investigation of Satellite Radio Access Technology for Beyond IMT-2000 Systems

  • This paper presents an investigation of satellite radio access technology for beyond IMT-2000 systems. Although we could not see any active role of a satellite system in the 3G networks, satellite system will provide strong advantages in future systems for certain applications. Because a satellite link has longer round trip delay than a terrestrial link, we need technologies that would make the satellite component especially efficient. After presenting the satellite radio interface of the 3G system, we suggest several points which need to be considered in the beyond 3G systems. We also suggest a few candidate technologies with various simulation results.

  • 최근의 대용량 다중 분산 라우터 시스템은 다수의 라인 인터페이스 모듈들과 라우팅 처리 모듈, 스위칭 패브릭 모듈로 구성되어 있고, 고속의 패킷 스위칭 및 라우팅을 구현하기 위하여 일반적으로 입력 패킷을 외부로 전송하기 위한 기능과 제어 및 관리 기능을 담당하는 기능으로 분리하여 실행되고 있다. 이러한 라우터에서는 내부 모듈들의 프로세서들 사이에 정보 송수신을 위해 프로세서 간 통신(IPC : Interprocess Communication)이 이용되고 있다. 라우터의 기능 중 제어 및 관리 기능은 신속한 처리를 위하여 UDP/IP 방식의 IPC 가 사용되고 있는데, 이 UDP/IP 방식을 개선 방안을 제안하고 prototype 시스템을 구현하여 시험한 결과 라우터의 데이터 round trip 시간과 throughput 이 각각 15.1%, 4.3%의 개선되어 라우터의 성능이 향상되었다.

  • 인트라넷은 TCP 를 지원하는 기존의 LAN 환경에서 인터넷 기술을 그대로 채택하였다. 이는 인터넷 기반의 TCP Parameter 값을 그대로 인트라넷에 적용하였음을 의미하며 서로 다른 환경에서 같은 Parameter 값의 적용은 네트워크 성능 저하의 원인이 되기도 한다. 네트워크의 성능을 확인하는 방법으로 Rtt(Round Trip Time:응답시간)와 Thput(Throughput:처리률)이 있다. 이값은 전송 거리와 트래픽 양에 따라 다르게 나타난다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 LAN 기반으로 전송거리에 따른 즉, Topology diameter 와 TCP Parameter 와의 관계를 RTT 와 Thput 을 통해 분석해 보았다.
