  • In recent researches, several LOD techniques are used for real-time visualization of large sized terrain data. However, during mesh simplification, geometry popping may occur in consecutive frames, because of the geometric error. We propose an efficient method for reducing the geometry popping using roughness map and bias map. A roughness map and a bias map are used to move vertices of the terrain mesh to appropriate position where they minimize the geometry errors. A roughness map and a bias map are represented as a texture suitable for GPU processing. Moving vertices using bias map is processed on the GPU, so the high-speed visualization can be possible.

  • To create a wind resource map, we need a contour map, a roughness map and wind data. We need a land cover map for the roughness map of these data. A land cover map represents the area showing similar characteristics after color indexing based on the scientific method. The features of land cover is classified by Remote sensing technique. In this study, we verified the application of the NDVI technique is reasonable after we created the wind resource map using roughness maps by unsupervised classification and NDVI technique. As a result, the wind resource map using the NDVI technique showed a 60% accordance rate and difference in class less than one. From the results, The NDVI technique is found alternative to create roughness maps by the unsupervised classification.

  • In order to create a wind resource map, we need wind data, contour map and roughness map. Moving Filter technique was applied to Udo of Jeju Island to improve the accuracy and efficiency of creating roughness map based on the Land Cover Map of the Ministry of Environment. The Land Cover Map was simplified using moving filtering, and the roughness map was created with this Land Cover Map. The wind resource map was created using this roughness map. Finally, we verified the validity and application of moving filter technique for wind resource map. As a result, the wind map which was created using the roughness map with moving filtering showed bias values which were all negative. It means the wind map is underestimated to values of wind energy and RMSE values were also from 0.0237m/s to 0.0253m/s at 50m height. In other words, estimation of wind resource using image filtering provides reliable results at 80m height typically when the wind turbine is installed. Finally, we found that image filtering technique is very useful tool to make wind resource map.

  • The magnetic abrasive polishing (MAP), for online monitoring with AE sensor attachment, was performed in this study. To predict the surface roughness after the magnetic abrasive polishing of NAK80, the signal data acquired from the AE sensor were analyzed. A dimensionless coefficient, which consisted of average of AErms and standard deviation of AE signal, was defined as a characteristic of the MAP and a prediction model was obtained using least square method. A neural network, which had multiple input parameters from AE signals and polishing conditions, was applied for predicting the surface roughness. As a result of this study, it was seen that there was very close correlation between the AE signal and the surface roughness in the MAP. And then on-line prediction of the surface roughness after the MAP of the NAK80 was possible by the developed prediction model.

  • This paper presented a new model of NC verification in ball end milling. The model verifies the over cut the under cut and the surface roughness using NC file generated from CAM and cutting condition. The model uses Z-map model to verify workpiece. In this paper, the model used the velocities of x, y and z direction and obtained a center point of a ball end mill for modeling Z-map of workpiece. To investigate the performance of the model simulation study was carried out. As the results, the model gave geometry accuracy of workpiece, the surface roughness and the chip loads in finish cutting that can predict tool chipping.

  • In this study, a wind hazard map over Korea peninsula based on geographical information is developed, which consists of the surface roughness model, the topographical effect model and the homogeneous wind model. The surface roughness model is assessed to evaluate the effect of the surface roughness on the wind field near ground. The topographical effect model is assessed to quantify the effect of the speed-up caused by topology, which is calculated by adopting the topographical effect factor in Korea building code (2005). The homogeneous wind map is created either by a frequency analysis method for meteorological data or a typhoon simulation. The results show that the wind hazard map can be applied to the determination of insurance premium as well as the assessment of loss and damage.

  • R/In order to satisfy the customer's variant needs for a product quality in recent years, a demand for developing higher precision machining technologies in a lot of application areas such as automobile, cellular phone and semiconductor has been increased more and more. Magnetic abrasive polishing(MAP) process is one of these precision technologies. In this study, to verify the parameters' effect of the MAP process on the surface roughness improvement of the plane and the inclined workpiece, well planned experiments which was called the design of experiments were carried out. Considered polishing factors were spindle speed, supplied current, abrasive type and working gap between the workpiece and the solid tool. As a result, it was seen that the supplied current and the working gap greatly affected the surface roughness improvement.

  • Recently, the interests in the development and application of unmaned robots are increasing in various fields including surveillance and reconnaissance, planet exploration, and disaster relief. Unmaned robots are usually controlled from distance using radio communications but they should be equipped with an autonomous travelling function to cope with unexpected terrains and obstacles. This means that they should be able to evaluate terrain's characteristics quantitatively using mounted sensors so as to traverse harsh natural terrains autonomously. For this purpose, this paper presents a method for extracting terrain information, that is, slope and roughness from elevation maps as a prior step of traversability analysis. Slope is extracted using the curve fitting based on the least squares method and roughness using three metrics and their weighted average. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified on both a fractal map and the world model map of a real terrain.

  • Batch process TRN(Terrain Relative Navigation) using an altimeter is a technique to correct position by correlating a series of periodically measured terrain height profile and terrain height candidate profile of the DEM(Digital Elevation Map). However, it is generally known that the performance of TRN is degraded when measured terrain height profile and terrain height candidate profiles of the DEM are similar at hill or repetitive terrain. In this paper, area based terrain slope roughness index[11] is applied and area based terrain curvature roughness index which can detect similarity of terrain in ROI(Region Of Interest) is proposed to overcome this problem. Applying terrain roughness indexes to terrain relative navigation system of lunar lander, it is shown that TRN using area based terrain roughness results in improved performance compared to conventional trajectory based method through simulation.
