  • In steel frames, the analysis and design techniques are based on either idealized fixed or pinned connections. In this case, it has the advantage that the structural analysis and the design procedure were simplified, but there could be given different results of analysis between the real steel frame connections and the idealized fixed and pinned connection. This is because the real connections would be analyzed by semi-rigid, and have some transfer of moment and rotational constraint about the loads. In this study, structural analysis program with considered connections that have joint rigidity of fixed, pinned and semi-rigid, was developed. Then, the effects of joint rigidity on strength and displacement. in steel frames subjected to lateral forces and axial forces, were investigate, and the results were compared with those of the Midas Gen. w program.

  • The ball screw preloaded for high nigidity and accuracy increases frictional resistance, therefore, its temperature and positioning error rise. In this paper, 2 diamensional temperature distributions of a ball screw with preload are analyzed according to the rotational speeds and stop times by a finite element method. The theremal behaviors of a ball screw are measured to examine the analyzed datum. The examined results show that the trends of temperature rising and axial distributions in steady state are nearly extimate but the temperature low. The differences of temperature ate seems to be caused by not exact heat transfer coefficients. More than an hour is consumed for calculation by FEM. So the modified lumped method for the real-time estimation of the thermal distribution is proposed. The estimated temperature of a ball serw by the modified lumped method is more exactly estimated than by FEM, nd that method takes less than several millisec. Moreover it can be used to estimate heat transfer coefficients.

  • To calibrate precision autocollimators, the Korean Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) has built a small angle generator using a laser interferometer. The system is based on a sine bar mechanism in which the angle is determined from the ratio of two lengths. The rotational angle is measured by the angle interferometer and the heterodyne laser interferometer detects the relative displacement of two retro-reflectors attached to the rotating arm. The distance between the two retro-reflectors of the laser angle interferometer is self-calibrated by an index table positioned on the rotating arm. The resolution of the system is 0.002 seconds, and the accuracy is better than 0.04 seconds within a measuring range of $\pm$1 degree. The small angle generator can also be used with an index table that can divide one circle into 1440 angles. The combined system can generate any angle over 360 degrees to an accuracy of 0.11 seconds.

  • The market of programmable implantable pumps has bound to a monopolistic situation, inducing high device costs, thus making them inaccessible to most patients. Micro-mechanical and medical innovations allow improved performances by reducing the dimensions. This affects the consumption and weight, and, by reducing the number of parts, the cost is also affected. This paper presents the procedure followed to design an innovative implantable drug delivery system. This drug delivery system consists of a low flow pump which shall be implanted in the human body to relieve pain. In comparison to classical known solutions, this pump presents many advantages of high interest in both medical and mechanical terms. The first section of the article describes the specifications which would characterize a perfect delivery system from every points of view. This concerns shape, medication, flow, autonomy, biocompatibility, security and sterilization ability. Afterwards, an overview of existing systems is proposed in a decisional tree. Positive displacement motorized pumps are classified into three main groups: the continuous movement group, the fractioned translation group and the alternative movement group. These systems are described and the different problems which are specific to these mechanisms are presented. Since none of them fully satisfy the specifications, an innovation is justified.. The decisional tree is therefore extended by adding new principles: fractioned refilling and fractioned injection within the fractioned translation movement group, spider guiding system within the alternative translation movement group, rotational bearing guided device and notch hinge guided device in the alternative rotation movement group.

  • A new equivalent linearization technique is proposed for a friction damper-brace system (FDBS) idealized as a elastoplastic system. The equivalent linearization technique utilizes secant stiffness and dissipated energy defined by the probability distribution of the extremal displacement of the FDBS. In addition, a conversion scheme is proposed so that an equivalent linear system is designed first and converted to the FDBS. For comparative study, an existing model update technique based on system identification is modified in a form appropriate to update single element. For the purpose of verification, shaking table tests of a small scale three-story shear building model, in which a rotational FDBS is installed, are conducted and equivalent linear systems are obtained using the proposed technique and the model update technique. Complex eigenvalue analysis is conducted for those equivalent linear systems, and the natural frequencies and modal damping ratios are compared with those obtained from system identification. Additionally, RMS and peak responses obtained from time history analysis of the equivalent linear systems are compared with measured ones.

  • The present work is an experimental and analytical study on a flexible disk rotating close to a rigid rotating disk in open air. In the analytical study, the air flow in the gap between the flexible disk and the rigid disk is modeled using Navier-Stokes and continuity equations while the flexible disk is modeled using the linear plate theory. The flow equations are discretized using the cell centered finite volume method (FVM) and solved numerically with semi-implicit pressure-linked equations (SIMPLE algorithm). The spatial terms in the disk equation are discretized using the finite difference method (FDM) and the time integration is performed using fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. An experimental test-rig is designed to investigate the dynamics of the flexible disk when rotating close to a co-rotating, a counter-rotating and a fixed rigid disk, which works as a stabilizer. The effects of rotational speed, initial gap height and inlet-hole radius on the flexible disk displacement and its vibration amplitude are investigated experimentally for the different types of stabilizer. Finally, the analytical and experimental results are compared.

  • For non-linear analysis of stiffened shell structures, the total Lagrangian formulation is presented based upon the degenerated shell element. Geometrically correct formulation is developed by updating the direction of normal vectors and taking into account second order rotational terms in the incremental displacement field. Assumed strain concept is adopted in order to overcome shear locking phenomena and to eliminate spurious zero energy mode. The post-buckling behaviors of stiffened shell structures are traced by modeling the stiffener as a shell element and considering general transformation between the main structure and the stiffener at the connection node. Numerical examples to demonstrate the accuracy and the effectiveness of the proposed shell element are presented and compared with references' results.

  • Although many patients who undergo bunion repair do well and have satisfactory results, a critical evaluation of these results shows the potential for improvement. Metatarsal deformity of the hallux valgus is a 3-dimensional deformity, including rotation in the coronal plane. Theoretically, it is important to understand the 3-dimensional displacement of the first metatarsal for correcting the deformities of valgus rotation in the frontal plane. Yet the current methods of metatarsal osteotomy principally attempt to correct the deformity in the transverse plane. The modified technique for the Lapidus procedure can be used in a variety of hallux valgus conditions and severities, and the early results suggest that a powerful correction can be maintained. In addition, efforts have been made to correct the 3-dimensional deformity by performing metatarsal shaft osteotomy. In the case of degenerative arthritis, first metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis is a good option to correct the 3-dimensional deformation. Correction of the 3-dimensional deformity, including a rotational deformity in the frontal plane of the metatarsals, should be considered when selecting surgical treatment and is essential for achieving a good prognosis for patients with hallux valgus. This article reviews the classification and treatment of hallux valgus for correction of the 3-dimensional deformity.

  • Newly designed structure of a thin ultrasonic rotary motor was proposed. Thin brass plate was used as a cross shaped vibrator and eight ceramic plates were attached on the upper and bottom sides of the brass plate as in Figure 1. The thin type ultrasonic motor has the structure adherent piezoelectric ceramic on the top and bottom surface of the thin elastic body. The direction of polarization is decided so as to occur the elliptical displacement in regular sequence at touch point A, B, C and D of stator contacted with rotor. By applying two electric fields which have 90 degree phase difference on the ceramics, each contact points make rotational displacements as in figure 2. Finite element analysis program ATILA was used to find the optimal size of the stator. As a result of the simulation, elliptical displacements of the tips were obtained at off-resonance frequencies. The maximum displacements of the contact tips were obtained at the length of 16[mm], width of 6[mm] and thickness of 0.4[mm]. Changes of the resonance frequencies were inversely proportional to the length of ceramic and proportional to the width of ceramic. Elliptical motions of the contact tips. of the stator were consistently obtained at off resonance frequencies. From a prototype motor, speed of 600[rpm] was obtained at 20[Vrms].

  • The gimbal expansion joint for the pipe line of a liquid rocket engine undergoes high pressure and cyclic rotational displacement loadings. In present study, the moment analyses and tests of the internal-type gimbal expansion joint for the engine were performed. The moment components due to spring stiffness, friction and lateral force were obtained using a analytic method and their sums at low and high pressures were compared with the test results. Also, applying a $MoS_2$ dry film lubricant to the pin of a external hinge expansion joint, it is tested that the galling of the pin was removed and the friction coefficient was decreased for low pressures.
