This study is to investigate the stress distributions, crystal orientations and magnetic properties during die-upsetting according to working temperature of Nd-Fe-B-Cu alloys. The stress distributions in the specimens during compressing process were calculated by a finite element method program(SPID). The calculated stresses were effective stress (${\sigma}_{eff}$), compression stress(${\sigma}_z$), radial direction stress(${\sigma}_r$) rotational direction stress(${\sigma}_e$) and shear stress(${\tau}_{rz}$). The stress distributions of ${\sigma}_z$, obtained by a computer simulation showed that the stress components causing the magnetic alignment during die-upsetting of the cast magnets were very high at the center-part of a specimen, and decreased toward the periphery-part of a specimen. In view of the above results the magnetic properties should be better at the center-part of a specimen than any other parts. But the measured magnetic properties were better at the mid-part. These results should be due to the fact that the specimens were casted. Normally the magnetic properties are affected by the casting process as well as by the stress levels. ${\sigma}_r$, ${\sigma}_e$ are thought to affect the liquid phase flowing and domain patterns, respectively. The influence of ${\tau}_{rz}$ was trivial, ${\sigma}_{eff}$ distributed similar throughout the specimen. The Nd-rich phase appeared at the peripheral of the specimen where the stress level of ${\sigma}_r$, ${\sigma}_z$, was low or the stress level of ${\sigma}_e$ was high. The Nd-rich phase was squeezed out during die-upsetting. This phase had an effect on the crystal orientation and grain growth. The stress distributions of alloy were irregular at the parts of the specimen where the die contacted with specimen.
There have been many studies on the two dimensional thermo-elasto-plastic analysis in welding process, mostly from viewpoint of residual stresses. In this study, the temperature distribution, transient thermal stress, and angular distortion during bead-on-plate gas metal arc welding of rectangular plates were analyzed by using the finite element method. A nonlinear heat transfer analysis was first performed by taking account of the temperature-dependent material properties and convection heat losses on the surface. This was followed by a thermo-elasto-plastic stresses and distortion analysis that incorporates the constrained boundary condition of the two dimensional solution domain to get the three dimensional size effect of the plate. The constrained boundary conditions adopted in this study were the constant displacement condition over the whole two dimensional section for axial movement in the welding direction, and the force boundary condition for rotational movementof the domain around the axis of the welding direction. It could be revealed that the theoretical predictions of the angular distortion have an improved agreement with the experimentally obtained data presented in the previous study.
In the present study, we investigate the flow characteristics of a quadrotor UAV in a hovering mode by measuring multiple two-dimensional velocity fields in the wake. The experiment is conducted at Re = 24,000 in a chamber large enough to neglect the ground effect, where Re is the Reynolds number based on the rotor chord length and the rotor tip speed. The rotational speed of the rotor is determined by an optical tachometer so that the lift force can be balanced with the weight of the UAV. The velocity field measured on the center plane of the rotor shows that the vortices are shedding from the tip of the rotor, inducing large fluctuations in the streamwise velocity along the wake shear layer. The strength of the rotor-tip vortex shedding is asymmetric with respect to the rotor axis due to the interaction between the rotor and the wake centerline of each rotor is inclined to the center of the UAV due to the pressure difference caused by the induced velocity. The wake from each rotor moves closer to each other while traveling in the streamwise direction, and then is merged together inducing large fluctuations in the transverse velocity. Due to the wake merging, on the center plane of the UAV, the velocity increases in the streamwise direction showing two-peak structure in the streamwise velocity contours.
Purpose: From the perspective of biomechanics, joint moments quantitatively show a subject's ability to perform actions. In this study, the effect of normalization in the fast and asymmetric motions of a golf swing was investigated by applying three different normalization methods to the raw joint moment. Methods: The study included 13 subjects with no previous history of musculoskeletal diseases. Golf swing analyses were performed with six infrared cameras and two force plates. The majority of the raw peak joint moments showed a significant correlation at p < 0.05. Additionally, the resulting effects after applying body weight (BW), body weight multiplied by height (BWH), and body weight multiplied by leg length (BWL) normalization methods were analyzed through correlation and regression analysis. Results: The BW, BWH, and BWL normalization methods normalized 8, 10, and 11 peak joint moments out of 18, respectively. The best method for normalizing the golf swing was found to be the BWL method, which showed significant statistical differences. Several raw peak joint moments showed no significant correlation with measured anthropometrics, which was considered to be related to the muscle coordination that occurs in the swing of skilled professional golfers. Conclusions: The results of this study show that the BWL normalization method can effectively remove differences due to physical characteristics in the golf swing analysis.

In diesel engines, accurate EGR control is important due to its effect on nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions. Conventional EGR control system comprises a PI feedback controller for tracking target air mass flow and a feedforward controller for fast response. Physically, the EGR flow is affected by EGR valve lift and thermodynamic properties of the EGR path, such as pressures and temperatures. However, the conventional feedforward control output is indirectly derived from engine operating conditions, such as engine rotational speed and fuel injection quantity. Accordingly, the conventional feedforward control action counteracts the feedback controller in certain operating conditions. In order to improve this disadvantage, in this study, we proposed feedforward EGR control algorithm based on a physical model of the EGR system. The proposed EGR control strategy was validated with a 3.0 liter common rail direct injection diesel engine equipped with a DC motor type EGR valve.

Rheological properties of waxy and non-waxy rice starch solutions were evaluated with a narrow gap rotational and Cannon Fenske viscometers. The gelatinized rice starch solutions containing 0.2-1.0% starch displayed pseudoplastic flow behavior. At higher starch level, degree of pseudoplasticity of waxy rice starch solutions increased, while that of non-waxy rice did not changed apparently. The consistency coefficient (K) of non-waxy rice starch solutions increased with increasing gelatinization temperature, but waxy rice starch solutions remained constant, and in alkaline aqueous solutions both of them showed increasing K values. The value of K increased exponentially with an increase in concentration. The effect of the temperature on the viscosity of the solutions followed Arrhenius' type equation, and the activation energies were in the range of 3.675-3.775 kcal/g-mol that were near to that of pure water. The changes of reduced viscosity with concentration were followed Huggin's equation and the values of intrinsic viscosity and interaction coefficient were 0.78-1.59 dl/g and 0.67-2.75, respectively.
'Distortional buckling' is one of the predominant buckling types that may occur in a steel-concrete composite box beam (SCCBB) under a negative moment. The key factors, which affect the buckling modes, are the torsional and lateral restraints of the bottom plate of a SCCBB. Therefore, this article investigates the equivalent lateral and torsional restraint rigidity of the bottom plate of a SCCBB under a negative moment; the results of which show a linear coupling relationship between the applied forces and the lateral and/or torsional restraint stiffness, which are not depended on the cross-sectional properties of a SCCBB completely. The mathematical formulas for calculating the lateral and torsional restraint rigidity of the bottom plate can be used to estimate: (1) the critical distortional buckling stress of SCCBBs under a negative moment; and (2) the critical distortional moment of SCCBBs. This article develops an improved calculation method for SCCBBs on an elastic foundation, which takes into account the coupling effect between the applied forces and the lateral and/or torsional restraint rigidity of the bottom plate. This article analyzes the accuracy of the following calculation methods by using 24 examples of SCCBBs: (1) the conventional energy method; (2) the improved calculation method, as it has been derived in this article; and (3) the ANSYS finite element method. The results verify that the improved calculation method, as it has been proved in this article, is more accurate and reliable than that of the current energy method, which has been noted in the references.
This paper deals with determining the fundamental frequency of tall buildings that consist of framed tube, shear core, belt truss and outrigger systems in which the framed tube and shear core vary in size along the height of the structure. The effect of belt truss and outrigger system is modeled as a concentrated rotational linear spring at the belt truss and outrigger system location. Many cantilevered tall structures can be treated as cantilevered beams with variable cross-section in free vibration analysis. In this paper, the continuous approach, in which a tall building is replaced by an idealized cantilever continuum representing the structural characteristics, is employed and by using energy method and Hamilton's variational principle, the governing equation for free vibration of tall building with variable distributed mass and stiffness is obtained. The general solution of governing equation is obtained by making appropriate selection for mass and stiffness distribution functions. By applying the separation of variables method for time and space, the governing partial differential equation of motion is reduced to an ordinary differential equation with variable coefficients with the assumption that the transverse displacement is harmonic. A power-series solution representing the mode shape function of tall building is used. Applying boundary conditions yields the boundary value problem; the frequency equation is established and solved through a numerical process to determine the natural frequencies. Computer program has been developed in Matlab (R2009b, Version 7.9.0.529, Mathworks Inc., California, USA). A numerical example has been solved to demonstrate the reliability of this method. The results of the proposed mathematical model give a good understanding of the structure's dynamic characteristics; it is easy to use, yet reasonably accurate and suitable for quick evaluations during the preliminary design stages.

The structures such as railway bridges can be modelled as the multi-span beam on the elastic foundation. These structures are usually subject to the moving load, which has a great effect on dynamic stresses and can cause severe motions, especially at high velocities. In this paper, the dynamic responses of the multi-span beam on the elastic foundation were obtained by using the Galerkin's method and the numerical time integration technique. As trial functions, the same orthogonal polynomial functions obtained in part 1, were used. From the numerical results, it was found that the one term expansion of the assumed solution usually leads to the accurate solutions. However, in the case that the stiffness of the transnational spring is very high or the rotational spring is placed where the slope of the first mode is zero, the higher modes must be included to obtain the accurate solutions.

An Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) for estimation of the attitude and rate of a spacecraft using only magnetometer vector measurement is developed. The attitude dynamics used in the estimation is the nonlinear Euler's rotational equation which is augmented with the quaternion kinematics to construct a process model. The filter is designed for small satellite in low Earth orbit, so the disturbance torques include gravity-gradient torque, magnetic disturbance torque, and aerodynamic drag torque. The magnetometer measurements are simulated based on time-varying position of the spacecraft. The filter has been tested not only in the standby mode but also in the detumbling mode. Two types of actuators have been modeled and applied in the simulation. The PD controller is used for the two types of actuators (reaction wheels and thrusters) to detumble the spacecraft. The estimation error converged to within 5 deg for attitude and 0.1 deg/s for rate respectively when the two types of actuators were used. A joint state parameter estimation has been tested and the effect of the process noise covariance on the parameter estimation has been indicated. Also, Monte-Carlo simulations have been performed to test the capability of the filter to converge with the initial conditions sampled from a uniform distribution. Finally, the UKF performance has been compared to that of the EKF and it demonstrates that UKF slightly outperforms EKF. The developed algorithm can be applied to any type of small satellites that are actuated by magnetic torquers, reaction wheels or thrusters with a capability of magnetometer vector measurements for attitude and rate estimation.
