  • This work presents numerical results, using OpenFOAM, of the flow in the swirl flow generator test rig developed at Politehnica University of Timisoara, Romania. The work shows results computed by solving the unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equations. The unsteady method couples the rotating and stationary parts using a sliding grid interface based on a GGI formulation. Turbulence is modeled using the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model, and block structured wall function ICEM-Hexa meshes are used. The numerical results are validated against experimental LDV results, and against design velocity profiles. The investigation shows that OpenFOAM gives results that are comparable to the experimental and design profiles. The unsteady pressure fluctuations at four different positions in the draft tube is recorded. A Fourier analysis of the numerical results is compared whit that of the experimental values. The amplitude and frequency predicted by the numerical simulation are comparable to those given by the experimental results, though slightly over estimated.

  • Aerospace structural applications, along with high performance marine and automotive applications, require high-strength efficiency, which can be achieved using metal matrix composites (MMCs). Rotating components, such as jet-engine blades and gas turbine parts, require materials that maximize strength efficiency and metallurgical stability at elevated temperatures. Titanium matrix composites (TMCs) are well suited in such applications, since they offer an enhanced resistance to temperature effects as well as corrosion resistance, in addition to optimum strength efficiency. The overall behavior of the composite system largly depends on the properties of the interface between fiber and matrix. Characterization of the fiber.matrix interface at operating temperatures is therefore essential for the developemt of these materials. The fiber fragmentation test shows good reproducibility of results in determining interface properties. This paper deals with the evaluation of fiber fragmentation characteristics in TMCs at elevated temperature and the results are compared with tests at ambient temperature. It was observed that tensile testing at $650^{\circ}C$ of single-fiber TMCs led to limited fiber fragmentation behavior. This indicates that the load transfer from the matrix to the fiber occurs due to interfacial friction, arising predominantly from mechanical clamping of the fiber by radial compressive residual and Poisson stresses. The present work also demonstrates that composite processing conditions can significantly affect the nature of the fiber.matrix interface and the resulting fragmentation of the fiber.

  • In this paper, we establish an analysis algorithm and a design procedure for a Vane-Wheel which is a freely rotating device behind a propeller, by using a panel method. Vane-Wheel's function is to extract energy from the propeller slipstream in turbine part which is inner part of the Vane-Wheel, and convert this energy into an additional propulsive thrust in propeller part which is outer part of the Vane-Wheel. Two parts must satisfy torque balance and thrust has to act to the ship's forward direction. A Vane-Wheel has large interaction effect with propeller since it is placed behind of the propeller. Therefore, in order to consider interaction effect correctly, incoming velocity to the Vane-Wheel in a circumferential mean wake was calculated considering induced velocity from propeller to the Vane-Wheel. Likewise, incoming velocity to the propeller was calculated considering induced velocity from the Vane-Wheel to the propeller. This process is repeated until a converged result is obtained.

  • The article describes the determination of the dynamic stability for an observation antenna, considering the rotational speed by the payload driving motor. A finite element model of the observation antenna was made using the solid and beam elements. The connecting parts between the solid and the beam was adequately coupled. The boundary conditions were made by restriction of the degree of freedoms in the supporting points. With the comparison between the modal analysis results and the rotating speed of the payload driving motor, no resonance for the structure of antenna was identified and first natural frequency was determined under 33 Hz (Seismic Cut-Off Frequency). Therefore, the dynamic stability of the antenna was confirmed by the comparism between the seismic safety criterion and the stress results of the dynamic analysis applied the loading conditions and required response spectrum (RRS).

  • Wear debris in lubricating oil can be indicative of potential damage to mechanical parts in rotating and reciprocating machinery. Therefore, on-line or in-line monitoring of lubricating components in machinery is of great importance. This work presents a device based on inductive measurement of lubricating oil to detect magnetic wear particles in a tested volume. The circuit in the device consists of Maxwell Bridge and LVDT to measure inductance differences between pure and contaminated oil. The device detects the passage of ferrous particles by monitoring inductance change in a coil. The sensing principle is initially demonstrated at the microscale using a solenoid. The device is then tested using iron particles ranging from $50{\mu}m$ to $100{\mu}m$, which are often found in severely worn mechanical components. The test results show that the device is capable of detecting and distinguishing ferrous particles in lubricating oil. The design concept demonstrated here can be extended to an in-line monitoring device for real-time monitoring of ferrous debris particles. A simulation using the CST code is performed to better understand the inductive response in the presence of magnetic bodies in the oil. The CST simulation further verifies the effectiveness of inductance measurement for monitoring magnetic particles within a tube.

  • Vibration profiles consist of two kinds of pattern, random and harmonic, at general engineering problems and the detailed vibration test mode of a target system is decided by the spectral condition that is exposed under operation. In moving mobility, random responses come generally from road source; whereas the harmonic responses are triggered from rotating machinery parts, such as combustion engine or drive shaft. Different spectral input may accumulate different damage in frequency domain since the accumulated fatigue damage dependent on the pattern of input spectrum in high cyclic loading condition. To evaluate the sensitivity of spectral damage according to different loading conditions, a linear elastic system is introduced to conduct a uniaxial vibration testing. Measured data, acceleration and strain, is analyzed using energy isocline function and then, the calculated fatigue damage is compared by different loading cases, random and harmonic.

  • To meet demand of big capacity and high speed rotation for washing machine, more stress from bending and twisting are complexly loaded onto the shaft supporting the horizontal drum, causing problems in fracture strength and fatigue life. Also, Vibration occurs due to the frequency of the rotating parts. But, shaft has various design factors such as diameter and distance between bearings according to configuration of shaft, the optimal values can't be easily determined. Using a design of experiment (DOE) based on the FEM (Finite Element Method), which has several advantages such as less computing, high accuracy performance and usefulness, this study was performed investigating the interaction effect between the various design factor as well as the main effect of the each design factor under bending, twist and vibration and proposed optimum design using center composition method among response surface derived from regression equation of simulation-based DOE.

  • We have performed extensive simulations of response of gaseous disk in barred galaxies using SPH method. The gravitational potential is assumed to be generated by disk, bulge, halo, and bar. The mass of gaseous disk in SPH simulation is assumed to be negligible compared to the stellar and dark mass component, and the gravitational potential generated by other components is fixed in time. The self-gravity of the gas is not considered in most simulations, but we have made a small set of simulations including the self-gravity of the gas. Non-circular component of velocity generated by the rotating, non-axisymmetric potential causes many interesting features. In most cases, there is a strong tendency of concentration of gas toward the central parts of the galaxy. The morphology of the gas becomes quite complex, but the general behavior can be understood in terms of simple linear approximations: the locations and number of Lindblad resonances play critical role in determining the general distribution of the gas. We present our results in the form of 'atlas' of artificial galaxies. We also make a brief comment on the observational implications of our calculations. Since the gaseous component show interesting features while the stellar component behaves more smoothly, high resolution mapping using molecular emission line for barred galaxies would be desirable.

  • In this study, a hydraulic press structure has been investigated in order to enhance the precision machining and the productivity, which are generally damaged by the structural deformation from the pressure and the vibrations originated from the centrifugal forces from the rotating parts of the machine. Computer simulation based on the finite element method has been utilized for the analysis of static and dynamic characteristics to investigate each component's critical points, and to further improve the static and dynamic stabilities of a hydraulic press structure. The result shows that the deformations and the vibrations of the machine could be reduced 35% without increasing the weight of the machine.

  • Oil seals are most essential parts in mechanical lubrication system to maintain the close gaps between stationary and high rotating components, and to help prevent oil leakages. Oil seals also can prevent harmful contaminants entering from outside to machinery, especially in severe environments. Therefore, the oil seals have an important performance in the machinery components. The performance of the oil seals are influenced by the design variables such as amount of interference gap between the main lip and shaft, the angle of main lip at air and oil sides and the distance between the garter spring and main lip. In the present study, a finite element analysis was performed to evaluate the oil seal performance with the considerations of number of oil seal dust lips and angle of the lip at oil side with the different design variables. As a result from the FEM analysis, the stress and contact pressure distributions was derived, based on this, performance of the sealing and durability were determined.
