Effect of Root Zone Temperature on the Growth and the Leaf Mineral Contents of Apple(Malus domestica Borkh) Trees (근권(根圈) 온도환경(溫度環境)이 사과나무의 생육(生育) 및 엽중(葉中) 무기성분함량(無機成分含量)에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the influence of root zone temperature on the growth of shoot and root and the mineral contents in leaf of 'Fuji/M26' apple tree. Shoot growth and enlargement of trunk girth increased linearly with increasing root zone temperature. Fresh and dry weight of root reached maximum at $35^{\circ}C$. Water content of root increased with rising root zone temperature. The chlorophyll content of leaves showed insignificant difference with root zone temperature. Leaf water potential was high at $35^{\circ}C$ at 15 day after treatment but 60 day after treatment this was decreased. The nitrogen content of the leaves was not different by root zone temperature whereas the phosphorus content of the leaves was increased at $30^{\circ}C$ in 1993 and at $25^{\circ}C$ in 1994. The potassium content of the leaves reached a maximum at $30^{\circ}C$ in 1993 and $25^{\circ}C$ in 1994. In 1994 the calcium content of the leaves was increased with rising root zone temperature and with lengthening duration of treatment but no such differences were found in 1993. The magnesium content of the leaves was highest at $25^{\circ}C$ in 1993 and at $20^{\circ}C$ in 1994. The nitrogen and potassium content of the roots were increased linearly with root zone temperature in 1993 and 1994 and the magnesium and phosphorus content of the roots were high at $35^{\circ}C$ in 1994 but no such differences were found in the calcium content of the roots.

Dynamics of Root Systems in the Fairy Rings of Tricholoma matsutake (송이(松栮) 균환(菌環)에서의 근계(根系) 동태(動態))

  • The dynamics of root system in the fairy rings of Tricholoma matsutake was investigated in four zones divided into 'zone of decayed mycorrhizae', 'zone of mycorrhizae for fruiting', 'zone of physiologically active mycorrhizae' and 'zone of roots free from mycorrhizal infection'. The roots of Pinus densiflora in fairy rings, which occupied 70% of upper crown, comprised about 60% and 87% of total roots and alive roots, respectively. The ratio of fine-roots of P. densiflora over total roots was relatively higher than other species since that of P. densiflora was about 45% while that of the other species was about 13% on research of fine-roots. Especially, the roots of pine comprised about 70% of total root in the zone of mycorrhizae for fruiting and the zone of physiologically active mycorrhizae, which indicated that the pine roots were closely related to the fairy rings of T. matsutake. The fine roots of P. densiflora in the zone of physiologically active mycorrhizae was about 60.7%(1,087mg/100g soil) which was about twice compared to that of other zones. It allowed us to suppose that the fine roots of P. densiflora can make active growth in the zone of physiologically active mycorrhizae, and the growth was promoted by the fairy ring formation of T. matsutake. In addition, we found 3~5 times higher amount of fine roots than that of medium roots of P. densiflora in this zone, which indicated that the fairy rings of T. matsutake locate in the region of active growth of P. densiflora' roots.

  • The temperature of root zone is known as an important factor for the growth of crops and reduction of energy in greenhouse. The purpose of this study was to design the solar energy supply system to keep the optimum condition of root zone by soil warming. As a result of this study, soil warming compared with no warming changed on a large scale temperature rise effect by depth of soil. The greenhouse's inner temperature have an effect on the temperature of surface up to 15 cm, rised to about 1 hour after warming. In case of the temperature fluctuation, soil temperature was about $12^{\circ}C$ up to 15${\sim}$25 cm and it was $13.4^{\circ}C$ at greater depths. This results showed that the position of root zone was very different after 3 weeks of growth.

  • A rose factory type is a system that enables year-round, planned and mass production of high quality cut-rose. Conversion of a conventional system to a rose factory is essential to increase cut-rose export. Controlling root Bone in culled rose production factory is very important for economic and efficient production of rose. This study was conducted to determine optimum root zone temperature of nutrient solution in single-stemmed rose production system. The optimum temperature of the nutrient solution for growth, photosynthetic and transpiration rates for 'Red Velvet' was $15\~20^{\circ}C$. Whereas the optimum temperature for 'Vital' was $10\~15^{\circ}C$. However, growth was almost sloped at $30^{\circ}C$, resulting in concluding the adaptation of 'Vital' to high temperature was poor as compared with 'Red Velvet'.

  • This study was conducted to determine the optimum root zone environment condition and proper nutrient management system for lettuce in hydroponics. For the root zone environment condition, several level of pH and electrical conductivity (EC) were treated respectively. Though all the level of pH 4 to pH 8, except pH 3, performed better growth without any visible physiological disorder, the optimum pH of the nutrient solution for lettuce production was pH 5.5 to 6.0. The optimum ionic strength of the solution was EC 1.2 to 1.6 mS $cm^{-1}$ / because higher nutrient level caused tip burn symptom by calcium deficiency. Considering the above results, it is concluded that lettuce can be efficiently mass-produced through the optimum root zone environment.

  • This experiment was undertaken in order to clarify effect of NO$_3$-N/NH$_4$-N ratios(NO$_3$/NH$_4$ : 10:0, 8:2) in the nutrient solution on growth, yield, photosynthetic rate, relative concentration of chlorophyll and root activity of hydroponically grown pepper plants at three different root- zone temperatures of 18$^{\circ}C$, 22$^{\circ}C$ and 26$^{\circ}C$. Plant height, leaf number, stem diameter, fresh and dry weight of leaf and root were no effect in by three root- zone temperatures. However, leaf number, stem diameter, fresh and dry weight of leaf and stem, dry weight of root at 18$^{\circ}C$, 22$^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ increased when NH$_4$-N was added to the solution. Under root-Bone temperatures of 18$^{\circ}C$, 26$^{\circ}C$ condition, fruit length were longer by the addition of NH$_4$-N. Fruit number and yield increased by the addition of NH$_4$-N at three root-zone temperatures. Photosynthetic rate decreased as root - zone temperature increased. Under root-zone temperatures of 18$^{\circ}C$, 22$^{\circ}C$ and 26$^{\circ}C$ condition, photosynthetic rate increased significantly by the addition of NH$_4$-N. Chlorophyll content of plants increased at 22$^{\circ}C$. Under root-zone temperatures of 18$^{\circ}C$, 22$^{\circ}C$ and 26$^{\circ}C$ condition, chlorophyll content of plants increased by the addition of NH$_4$-N. Root activity of increased at 26$^{\circ}C$ Under root-Bone temperatures of 18$^{\circ}C$, 22$^{\circ}C$ and 26$^{\circ}C$ condition, root activity increased by the addition of NH$_4$- N.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the influence of the root zone temperature on the changes in soil physicochemical environment and the growth of the apple trees. Root zone temperatures applied were 20. 25. 30. and $35^{\circ}C$. A pot experiment of 4-year-old fruit-bearing Fuji/M.26 apple trees was done from May 15. 1997 to August 15. 1997. Shoot length and shoot number of 4-year-old Fuji/M.26 was longest at $30^{\circ}C$ but decreased at $35^{\circ}C$. Oxygen concentrations in soil air were maintained from 17 to 18% at $20^{\circ}C$ but fluctuated from 10 to 14% at the end at $35^{\circ}C$. Carbon dioxide concentrations in soil air was highest at $35^{\circ}C$. Organic matter contents in soil decreased as root zone temperature and duration of treatment increased. Nitrate and ammonium contents in soil increased with rising root zone temperature in the beginning but nitrate contents decreased at $35^{\circ}C$ as time progressed. Nitrate content was higher in 10~15cm subsoil than in 25~30cm subsoil.

Effects of Oligosaccharide and Pseudomonas sp. on the Growth of Potted Kalanchoe During Summer Season (천연올리고당 및 Pseudomonas속 길항미생물의 단독 및 혼용처리가 고온기 칼랑코에 생육촉진에 미치는 영향)

  • Most severe problem in production of potted kalanchoe during summer season is retardation of growth caused by high temperature. The aim of this experiment was aimed to investigate the effects of natural products such as algin-oligosacchride and glucosamine oligosaccharide, plant growth promoting rhizovacteria such as Pseudomonas sp. B and Pseudomonas sp. D2, and AG-solution on the growth of potted kalanchoe under the different root zone temperature in the greenhouse. Growth characteristics in terms of plant height, leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, leaf weight, fresh weight of shoot and root and root length were recorded under three root zone temperatures (25$^{\circ}C$, 30$^{\circ}C$, 35$^{\circ}C$). In 25$^{\circ}C$, the mixed treatment of Pseudomonas sp. B and glucosamine oligosaccharide resulted in the best growth in terms of plant height, leaf area and root weight. In 3-$^{\circ}C$, glucosamine oligosaccharide treatment gave fair result in plant height and leaf weight, but the mixed treatemtn of Pseudomonas sp. D2 and algin-oligosaccharide showed better growth on leaf area and root weight. In 35$^{\circ}C$, the mixed treatment of Pseudomonas sp. B and glucosamine oligosaccharide could greatly improve the plant height, leaf area, leaf weight and root weight. These results demonstrated that the mixed treatment of natural products and microorganisms could overcome the detrimental effects caused by high temeprature in the production of kalanchoe.

Characteristic of Growth and Active Ingredient in Angelica gigas Nakai according to Forest Environment by Climate Zone (기후대별 산림환경에 따른 참당귀의 생육 및 지표성분 특성)

  • Background: Angelica gigas Nakai, that belong to the Umbelliferae family, is one of the traditional medicinal plants in Korea. Its roots have been used to treat gynecological diseases. In this study, growth characteristics and index components were compared with the forest microclimate at several forest sites. Methods and Results: A. gigas was planted in three climatic zones according to the temperature (southern temperature zone - Hamyang, central temperature zone - Bonghwa, and northern temperature zone - Jeongseon) and growth characteristics were investigated in comparison with the forest microclimate. Our results indicated that the root diameter and length, and fresh and dry weight were the highest in Jeongseon. The total content of decursin was the highest in Jeongseon (9.52%), followed by those in Hamyang (8.07%) and Bonghwa (7.48%), respectively. Additionally, the yield of decursin (1.39 g) was the highest in Jeongseon. Conclusions: The yield and index components were influenced by the microclimate in the forests, and it was assumed that high altitude and low temperature affected the increase in growth and index components. These results will be useful as basic data to study the correlation among environmental conditions, growth, and index components.

  • Chemical and microbial characteristics of root zone of neighboring large and small ginseng in a high yield field were investigated in relation to root growth. $NO_3-N$, $NH_4-N$, and available P contents were significantly low for large root but Ca high. The contents of $NO_3-N$ or $NH_4-N$ showed significant negative correlation with fine root development. Precipitation quotient of humic acid tended to be high for large roots. The population of one dominant bacteria was significantly high for large root. The ratios of bacteria to fungi or actinomycetes were positively correlated with fine root development.
