Comparative Wood Anatomy of Stem and Root in Lindera erythrocarpa Makino

  • Stem and root of Lindera erythrocarpa were described and compared in the wood anatomical aspects. Root wood appeared to differ from stem wood in the qualitative features of growth ring boundary, extraneous materials in vessel element and ray parenchyma cell, outline of ray, and sheath cell. In the quantitative features, there were differences between these two tissues in vessels per square millimeter, tangential diameter of vessel lumina, length of vessel element, and width of ray. These wood anatomical differences between stem above ground and root below ground were thought to be attributed to their different growth environments.

  • Neo-aortic insufficiency associated with root enlargement following an arterial switch operation is a serious late complication. To achieve successful surgical correction of this condition, multiple factors should be considered, including the individual patient's anatomy, the challenging nature of the redo procedure, and the patient's young age. However, limited publications have described the use of valve-sparing techniques for the treatment of neo-aortic insufficiency associated with root enlargement following an arterial switch operation. Herein, we report our recent experience of a valve-sparing aortic root procedure with ascending aorta and hemiarch replacement despite the presence of a discrepancy in leaflet size and nearby severe adhesions.

  • Root canal debridement, which includes the removal of infected tissues and microbial biofilms, is considered the corner stone of root canal treatment. Chemical adjuncts play a multitude of functions in this regard, as tissue solvents, antimicrobial agents and for removing the smear layer. These adjuncts (irrigants) are usually delivered using a syringe and needle. With increasing knowledge of the complexity of root canal anatomy and tenacity of microbial biofilms, the need for strategies that potentiate the action of these irrigants within the root canal system cannot be overemphasized. Several such activated irrigation strategies exist. The aim of this review is to comprehensively discuss the different irrigant activation methods from the context of clinical studies.

  • Maxillary first molar, the "6-year molar", is the tooth largest in volume and most complex in root and root canal anatomy. Therefore, maxillary first molar is possibly the most treated, least understood. It is the posterior tooth with the highest endodontic failure rate and unquestionably one of the most important teeth. The earliest permanent posterior tooth to erupt, the mandibular first molar seems to be the most frequently in need of endodontic treatment.(omitted)

Endodontic treatment of a mandibular first molar with 8 canals: a case report

  • Presented here is a case where 8 canals were located in a mandibular first molar. A patient with continuing pain in mandibular left first molar even after completion of biomechanical preparation was referred by a dentist. Following basic laws of the pulp chamber floor anatomy, 8 canals were located in three steps with 4 canals in each root. In both of the roots, 4 separate canals commenced which joined into two canals and exited as two separate foramina. At 6 mon follow-up visit, the tooth was found to be asymptomatic and revealed normal radiographic periapical area. The case stresses on the fact that understanding the laws of pulp chamber anatomy and complying with them while attempting to locate additional canals can prevent missing canals.

Experimental Study on the Expression of Hair Growth Related Factors after Bee Venom Acupuncture Therapy (봉독약침요법(蜂毒藥鍼療法)에 의한 발모관련 인자들의 발현에 대한 연구)

  • The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of bee venom acupuncture therapy on the hair follicle growth by macroscopic, microscopic and immunohistochemical observation of skin 10 and 17 days after treatment. The results were as follows : Macroscopic hair follicle growth of 0.2 ml S.B.V. acupuncture treated group was more prominent than those of 0.1 ml S.B.V. acupuncture treated group and control group. Microscopic observation indicated that the hair follicle growth of control group reached anagen phase IV of hair growing cycle, and that of 0.1 ml and 0.2 ml S.B.V. acupuncture treated groups reached anagen phase VI and catagen, respectively. Immunohistochemical observations of the expression of various cytokines, enzymes and receptors in association with hair follicle cycle after local treatment of S.B.V. acupuncture therapy are as follows: Expression of fibroblast growth factor was more intense in epidermis and outer root sheath in 0.2 ml S.B.V. acupuncture treated group than that of 0.1 ml S.B.V. acupuncture treated group and control group. Expression of epidermal growth factor was more intense in bulge and outer root sheath in 0.2 ml S.B.V. acupuncture treated group than that of 0.1 ml S.B.V. acupuncture treated group and control group. Expression of c-kit receptor was more intense in epidermis, bulge and outer root sheath in 0.2 ml S.B.V. acupuncture treated group than that of control group. Expression of vascular endothelial growth factor was more intense in epidermis, bulge and outer root sheath in 0.2 ml S.B.V. acupuncture treated group than that of control group. Expression of protein kinase C-${\alpha}$ was more intense in epidermis, bulge and outer root sheath in 0.2 ml S.B.V. acupuncture treated group than control group. It is concluded that bee venom acupuncture therapy promoted the expression of various cytokines, enzymes and receptors related to the hair growth cycle for hair growth. This findings indicates that bee venom acupuncture therapy is applicable to the treatment of hair loss.

  • A total of 114 extracted human mandibular first molars were used to study the configuration of the floor of the chamber. The specimens were ground and the pulp chamber was examined with a magnifier and explored with sharp explorer. The study showed the shape of the pulp chamber, number of root canals, and the type of canal orifice. The results were as follows; 1. In so far as observing the shape of the pulp chamber of the teeth, 58.8% of the teeth were square, 34.2% were triangle and 7.0% were ovoid shape. 2. 58.8% of the specimens have 4 root canal orifices, 34.2% have 3 root canal orifices, 7.0% have 2 root canal orifices. 3. 41.2% of the specimens show 'H' shape, 17.6% show 'Square' shape, 31.6% show 'T' shape, 2.0% show 'reverse-T' shape and 7.0% show 'I' shape.

  • A total of 114 extracted human mandibular 2nd molars were used to study the configuration of the floor of the chamber. The specimens were ground and the pulp chamber was examined with a magnifier and explored with sharp explorer. The study showed the shape of the pulp chamber, number of root canals, and the type of canal orifice. The results were as follows, 1. In so far as observing the shape of the pulp chamber of the teeth, 47.4% of the teeth were square, 42.9% were triangle and 9.7% were ovoid shape. 2. 35% of the samples had 2 root canal orifices, 62% had 3 root canal orifices, 3% had 4 root canal orifices. 3. 3% of the specimens showed 'H' shape, 5% showed 'Square' shape, 51% showed 'T' shape, 1% showed 'reverse-T' shape, 35% showed 'I' shape and 5% showed the specific 'C' shape.

  • A total of 130 extracted human maxillary second molars were used to study the configuration of the floor of the pulp chamber. The specimens were ground and the pulp chamber was examined with a magnifier and explored with sharp explorer. The study showed the shape of the pulp chamber, number of root canals, and the type of canal orifice. The results were as follows; 1. In so far as observing the shape of the pulp chamber of the teeth, 16.9% of the teeth were quadrilateral, 70.0% were triangle and 13.1% were ovoid shape. 2. 13.1% of the specimens have 4 root canal orifices. 73.9% have 3 root canal orifices, 11.5% have 2 root canal orifices and 1.5% have single orifice. 3. 13.1% of the specimens have 2 mesio-buccal canal orifices and among the teeth those have 3 canals, 20.8% show 'Y' shape, 29.1% show straight line and 23.8% show obtuse triangle shape.

PERIODONTAL REGENERATION FOLLOWING RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY INCLUDING TOPICAL APPLICATION OF TETRACYCLINE IN DOGS (테트라싸이클린이 치주결체조직의 재부착에 미치는 효과)

  • This study was designed to examine the effect of tetracycline application to the planed periodontal surgery of the experimentally induced periodontal disease in dogs. Modified Widman flap surgery was done and aqueous tetracycline (1%) was applied to the root surface for 5min, after which the wound was rinsed with saline, and flaps were coronally repositioned. Root surface ntoches were used as reference points. The animals were sacrificed 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks after surgery, and block sections of tooth and surround tissue were processed for conventional light and electron microscopy. The results were as follows : 1. A more coronal position of junctional epithelium was observed in the area treated with tetracycline. 2. In the most of the tetracycline - treated teeth, the new collagen fibrils of connective tissue were oriented vertical/or oblique and parallel to the root surface. The vertical or oblique fibers were inserted into the denuded dentin matrix and contacted with exposed dentin collagen fibrils. 3. In the tetracycline - treated root, new cementum apposition, most of acellular extrinsic fiber cementum, was seen with bundles of oriented collagen fibrils incoporating into the cementum. 4. In the control and tetracyclin - treated teeth, bone resorption was observed at the alveolar crest in the 1 week groups.
