Sokkuram grotto, a UNESCO cultural heritage in Kyongju Korea, was originally covered with crushed rocks over its dome with ventilating holes. The grotto was perfectly preserved for more than 12 centuries until the upper structure was replaced with a concrete dome in the early 20th century to protect from total collapse. Since then, heavy dew formed on the granite surface to seriously damage the sculptures until it was further remodeled with air-conditioning facilities in the 60s. It is considered that the original upper porous structure had a dehumidifying capability. This research is made to unveil the dehumidifying mechanism of the rock layer during the rainy season in that area. A rock layer and a concrete layer are tested in a temperature/humidity-controlled room. No dew formation is observed for the two specimen for continued sunny days or continued rainy days. However, heavy dew formed on the concrete surface for a sunny day after long rainy days. It is thought that the sun evaporates water on the ground and dew is formed at the surface as the highly humid air touches the yet cold concrete. On the contrary, no dew formation is observed for the rock layer at any time. Even in the above worst situation, air flows downward through the cool rock layer and moisture is removed before reaching inside. Temperature measurement, flow visualization, observation of dew formation and measurement of air velocity are made to verify the mechanisms.
The paper discusses the modelling of the thermal storage roof with the air circulation system. In this system, the fully glazed absorber plate is put on the top of the conventional pitch roof made of massive concrete and acts as a solar air heater. Solar radiation collected into absorber is stored in the roof structure by radiation and convection so that it reduces the nighttime heating load through the roof. Another part of the energy is also transmitted to internal air drawn into the channel and is then introduced Into the room. To analysis the system, the energy balance equations are developed and are solved using a finite difference method. The calculation results show a good agreement with the measured ones obtained from our experiments. From the results, it is seen that the thermal storage roof with the air circulation system reduces significantly the conductive heat loss compared with that for the conventional roof and has the instantaneous solar collection efficiency of about 30%.
A heating flow discharged from a 4-way ceiling type indoor unit has been investigated using a PIV(particle image velocimetry) system For the PIV measurements, an experimental model of 1/10 scale with a transparent room was devised by satisfying the Archimedes number, which is generally used in case that the forced convection has the similar magnitude as the natural convection. To optimize the heating flow, several vane angles and vane control algorithms of cross and right angle controls were considered. Regarding the vane angle, the experimental results show that it should be less than $30^{\circ}$ to avoid re-suction flows which decrease the performance of the air-conditioner. At the vane angle of $30^{\circ}$, applying open/close control gives nae to more uniform distribution of the heating flow than without control. Especially, the cross-control seems to be satisfactory for the thermal comfort.
In order to prevent incoming solar radiation, it is necessary to study about blinds' blocking out effects of heat that are installed at the balcony at an apartment house. To figure out the heating effects from the windows, a study for indoor thermal environment according to the location of blinds is also needed. In order to find out the changes of indoor thermal environment, we'll compare models of a house building with or without Venetian blinds: one place has an extended living room removing a balcony and another one has a normal balcony. The result is as follows. Without blinds, the place with an extended living room has benefits for saving heat compare to the place with a normal balcony. It's because the warm air heated by the incoming solar radiation moves into the living room through convection current and radiation which causes an increase of the indoor temperature. At an extended living room, the temperature difference from outside and inside, when blinds were installed inside, was $1.9^{\circ}C$ while it was $0.6^{\circ}C$ when the blinds were installed at outside of the balcony. It is evaluated that setting up the blind outside prevents much heat. At the space with a normal balcony, installing blinds at living room windows can save much heat compare to installing blinds at windows at the balcony. The indoor temperature was low when blinds were installed. It can be said that blinds block heat from the incoming solar radiation. Moreover, when blinds are installed, there is a big change of indoor temperature due to the radiation from the blinds' slat and convective activities in between the blinds and windows. This also has to be considered.
There is a chilled ceiling panel which carries out the air conditioning by radiation and convection between the room and cold ceiling panel surface. In order to verify heat transfer characteristics between them in cooling system with radiant chilled ceiling panel, analytical and experimental studies were performed for various design and operating parameters such as tube space and diameter, inlet water temperature, mass flow rate, cooling load, and so on. In this study, we found that the tube space and inlet water temperature were more important elements than the tube diameter and water flow rate for the performance of radiant chilled ceiling panel. The cooling capacity of the radiant chilled ceiling panel had the maximum value of $65W/m^{2}$ because the highest cooling capacity was limited by the condensation on the panel surface. The results of comparison between numerical analysis and experiment showed a resonable agreement qualitatively, especially for low cooling capacity.
When test tubes for PCM with melting point lower than a room temperature are installed vertically as the T-history method proposes, there exists a temperature distribution in the longitudinal direction by natural convection, which lowers the precision of measured heat-of-fusion. The purpose of the present work is to improve the precision by arranging the test tubes horizontally, while maintaining the simplicity and convenience. Assuming that the amount of heat transfer is very small through the vapor space formed in the upper part of the tubes by volumetric change, the obtained value by the T-history method using the latent heat period bounded by two inflection points is in good agreement with that of the literature. Also, the scattering of measured values by the proposed method decreases markedly compared to that of vertical positioning.

Products for heating indoors in low temperature and dry winter are largely divided into products using fossil fuels and products using electricity. The fossil fuels can warm the entire space by convection, but there is a high risk of fire and the frequent ventilation due to the increase in carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Heaters using electricity are mainly used because they are convenient to use and are cheap. However, these products can not efficiently warm the air because they use radiation energy. In other words, only the front part exposed to the heater is warm, and the rear part has no heating effect at all. Also, because it emits a large amount of light, fatigue of the eyes is very high. Another problem is that when using electric heaters, the room tends to be dry by high heat. Indoor humidity maintenance is a very important factor in the prevention and treatment of respiratory diseases. Especially, it is essential for health care for infants, bronchial organs and people with weak respiratory because humidity is low in winter. In this study, we conducted a study to develop a product that can improve heating efficiency while maintaining proper indoor humidity by combining heat energy and moisture particles. The concept of humidification and heating at the same time, moisture particles generated in the humidifier pass through the heater, include thermal energy, and the moisture particles with thermal energy are diffused into the space by forced convection, thereby warming the entire space. In addition, the heating time is shortened as the feeling temperature is increased with the high relative humidity, and this has the effect that the heating cost in winter is reduced.
