  • A rolling speed dependent spread model is proposed for predicting the exit cross sectional shape in oval-round (or round-oval) pass rod rolling process when the rolling speed is very high. The effect of rolling speed on the exit cross sectional shape is measured by performing a four-pass continuous high speed (${\sim}80m/s$) rod rolling test and is described in terms of the spread correction parameter. The validity of the model is examined by applying it to rod rolling process at POSCO No.3 Rod Mill. The cross sectional shapes of workpiece predicted by the proposed model coupled with the surface profile prediction $method^{6}$ are in good agreement with those obtained experimentally.

  • Recently, PM-high speed steel(PM-HSS) has reportedly been a good alternative material for rolling mill because of its superior performance to conventional HSS. This paper has been aimed to investigate the possibility for application to rolling contact element for PM-HSS by X-ray diffraction technique. The X-ray elastic constant for PH-HSS has been found by X-ray diffraction during the four-point bending test. Residual stress and half-value breadth on the contact surface during rolling contact fatigue process by X-ray diffraction have also been measured. The result of this study shows that the application of X-ray diffraction technique to PM-HSS could be as possible alternative material as conventional HSS. Half-value breadth on rolling contact surface by X-ray diffraction is not changed during rolling contact fatigue process. On the other hand, the residual stress is changed. This suggests that dislocation reaction has been hardly occurred in rolling contact, depending on super-saturated carbon in PM-HSS.

  • In view of the effects of the hardness of material on fatigue, rolling contact fatigue process in hard metals seems to differ from it in soft metals. This paper has been aimed to compare the rolling contact fatigue process according to the hardness of materials. Rolling contact fatigue tests using the ball bearings assembled with the inner race of four different hardness have been carried out. In addition, residual stress and half-value breadth on/below the inner raceway during individual rolling contact fatigue have been measured by X-ray diffraction. The results of this study showed that the change of residual stress and half-value breadth during the rolling contact fatigue on race way in hard metals is the same as in soft metals. However, plastic deformation by rolling contact in hard metals is in microscopic scale but only for soft metals in macroscopic scale.

  • Temperature prediction model was developed for on-line application to plate rolling mills of POSCO. The adequate boundary conditions of heat transfer coefficients were obtained by comparing the predicted temperature with the measured temperatures taken by measuring system in plate rolling mill of POSCO. In obtaining the boundary condition which minimize the mean and standard deviation of the difference between prediction and measurement, orthogonal array for experimental design was used to reduce the calculation time of large data set. To predict the temperature drop at four edge of plate in one dimensional model, the energy change by heat transfer though directions perpendicular to thickness direction was treated like that by deformation. And the heat transfer through four edge directions was inferred from that through thickness direction with two coefficients of depth and severity of temperature drop at the edge. The boundary condition for the depth and severity of temperature drop were also determined using the measured temperature.

  • A major concern at present is the simultaneous control of transverse thickness profile and flatness in the finishing stages of hot rolling process. The mathematical modeling of hot rolling process has long been recognized to be a desirable approach to investigate rolling operating practice and the design of mill equipment to improve productivity and quality. However, many factors make the mathematical analysis of the rolling process very complex and time-consuming. In order to overcome these problems and to obtain an accurate rolling force, the predicted model of rolling force using neural networks has widely been employed. In this paper, Radial Basis Function Network(RBFN) is applied to improve the accuracy of rolling force prediction in hot rolling mill. In order to verify and analyze the performance of applied neural network the comparison with the measured rolling force and the predicted results using two different neural networks-RBFN, MLP, has respectively been carried out. The results obtained using RBFN neural network are much more accurate those obtained the MLP.

  • The effect of loading path changes on the strain and mechanical properties of a commercial pure aluminum was studied using flat rolling and groove rolling. Material during flat rolling undergoes a continuous monotonic compressive loading, while one during groove rolling experiences a series of cross compressive loading. Four-pass flat rolling and groove rolling experiment are designed such that the aluminum undergoes the same amount of the strain at each pass. The rolling experiment was performed at room temperatures. Specimens for tensile test are fabricated from the plate and bar rolled. In addition, the strain distribution for the plate and bar cold rolled specimens is also calculated by finite element method. The results reveal that differences of loading path attributed by monotonic loading(flat rolling) and cross loading(groove rolling) significantly influence the mechanical properties such as yield stress, ultimate tensile stress, strain hardening and elongation. It is clear that the different loading path can give raise to change the deformation history, although it is deformed with same amount of strain for same material.

  • Solution styrene-butadiene rubber (S-SBR) is used to improve the wet grip and rolling resistance properties of tire treads. As blending of SBRs can improve the physical properties of tire treads, we investigated the effects of SBR type and blending ratio on the physical properties. Twelve SBR/SBR biblend composites were prepared using four SBRs with different microstructures. The glass transition temperature (Tg), tanδ at 0℃ (wet grip predictor), and tanδ at 60℃ (rolling resistance predictor) were obtained from dynamic mechanical analysis, and were compared to the expected values obtained from the results of single SBR samples. Most of the SBR/SBR biblend composites exhibited crosslink densities lower than the expected values. The tanδ values at 0℃ and 60℃ of the SBR/SBR blend composites deviated from the expected values, with many of the deviations being disadvantageous. Of the twelve composites, six samples had higher 0℃ tanδ values than the corresponding expected values, and four exhibited superior wet grip properties to those of the SBR single samples. In addition, two of the twelve samples exhibited improved rolling resistance properties as compared with the single SBR samples. Finally, four samples exhibited lower Tg values than expected, and the Tg of one composite was lower than those of the single SBR samples.

  • Flat rolling of wire is an industrial process used to manufacture electrical flat wire, medical catheters, springs, piston segments and automobile parts, among other products. In a multi-step wire flat rolling process, a wire with a circular crosssection is rolled at room temperature between two flat rolls in several passes to achieve the desired thickness to width ratio. To manufacture a flat wire with a homogeneous microstructure, mechanical and metallurgical properties with an appropriate pass schedule, this study investigated the effect of each pass schedule (1stand ~ 4stand) on the microstructures, mechanical properties and widths of cold rolled high carbon steel wires using four-pass flat rolling process. The evolutions of the microstructures and mechanical properties of the widths of cold rolled wires during three different pass schedules of the flat rolling process of high carbon wires were investigated, and the results were compared with those for a conventional eight-pass schedule. In the width of cold rolled wires, three different pass schedules are clearly distinguished and discussed. The experimental conditions were the same rolling speed, rolling force, roll size, tensile strength of the material and friction coefficient. The experimental results showed that the four-pass flat cold rolling process was feasible for production of designed wire without cracks when appropriate pass schedules were applied.

  • In this paper, we present IGBT VVVF inverters as a 1C1M propulsion system for electric car. These inverters are composed of high power IGBT's and controlled by compact control units. The control unit performs full digital control by using 32bit DSP and microcontroller. By using CAN-bus, high speed network is constructed within four control units. The stack is simplified and optimized by using plate bus and IGBT driver units of hybrid-type.
