Rolling Test Simulation of Sea Transport of Spent Nuclear Fuel Under Normal Transport Conditions

  • In this study, the impact load resulting from collision with the fuel rods of surrogate spent nuclear fuel (SNF) assemblies was measured during a rolling test based on an analysis of the data from surrogate SNF-loaded sea transportation tests. Unfortunately, during the sea transportation tests, excessive rolling motion occurred on the ship during the test, causing the assemblies to slip and collide with the canister. Hence, we designed and conducted a separate test to simulate rolling in sea transportation to determine whether such impact loads can occur under normal conditions of SNF transport, with the test conditions for the fuel assembly to slide within the basket experimentally determined. Rolling tests were conducted while varying the rolling angle and frequency to determine the angles and frequencies at which the assemblies experienced slippage. The test results show that slippage of SNF assemblies can occur at angles of approximately 14° or greater because of rolling motion, which can generate impact loads. However, this result exceeds the conditions under which a vessel can depart for coastal navigation, thus deviating from the normal conditions required for SNF transport. Consequently, it is not necessary to consider such loads when evaluating the integrity of SNFs under normal transportation conditions.

  • In this paper, the process parameters of thread rolling were designed based on the numerical analysis results. Firstly, the effective analysis conditions that guarantee the reliability of the analysis results were found. To find the effective analysis conditions, the analyses were carried out for various numbers of teeth. And then, the effects of the process parameters such as tool shape and temperature on the thread rolling performance were investigated. The formability in thread rolling process was evaluated in terms of Cockcroft-Latham damage value. In order to evaluate formability, Cockcroft-Latham damage value was normalized by the critical damage value which was obtained from the analysis of uniaxial tensile test. The analyses were carried out using DEFORM-3D. The results showed that the flank angle and crest round had an effect on the thread rolling load. It was also shown that temperature had significant effects on the effective strain distribution, rolling load, and damage. With the reduced formability of stainless steel at higher temperature, it was shown that the normalized damage values increased as the process temperature.

Effects of Hot Asymmetric Rolling on Microstructure and Formability of Aluminum Alloys (고온 비대칭압연이 알루미늄 합금의 미세조직과 성형성에 미치는 영향)

  • In order to analyze the effect of hot asymmetric rolling on the microstructure and texture of aluminum alloy and to investigate the effect of the texture on the formability and plastic anisotropy of aluminum alloy, aluminum 6061 alloy is asymmetrically rolled at room temperature, $200^{\circ}C$, $350^{\circ}C$, and $500^{\circ}C$, and the results are compared with symmetrically rolled results. In the case of asymmetric rolling, the equivalent strain (${\varepsilon}_{eq}$) is greatest in the upper roll part where the rotational speed of the roll is high and increases with increasing rolling temperature. The increase rate of the mean misorientation angle with increasing temperature is larger than that during symmetrical rolling, and dynamic recrystallization occurs the most when asymmetrical rolling is performed at $500^{\circ}C$. In the case of hot symmetric rolling, the {001}<110> rotated cube orientation mainly develops, but in the case of hot asymmetric rolling, the {111}<110> orientation develops along with the {001}<100> cube orientation. The hot asymmetric rolling improves the formability (${\bar{r}}$) of the aluminum 6061 alloy to 0.9 and reduces the plastic anisotropy (${\Delta}r$) to near zero due to the {111}<110> shear orientation that develops by asymmetric rolling.

Evaluation of Material Durability by Identifying the Relationship between Contact Angle after Wear and Self-cleaning Effect Using Rolling Wear Tester (구름 마모시험 장비(Rolling wear tester)를 이용한 마모 후의 접촉각과 자가세정 효과와의 관계 규명을 통한 재료 내구성 평가)

  • This study is conducted to evaluate the durability of superhydrophobic surfaces, with a focus on two aspects: contact angle measurement and self-cleaning-performance analysis. Superhydrophobic copper and aluminum surfaces are fabricated using the immersion method and subjected to a rolling wear test, in which a 2 kg weight is placed on a rolling tester, under loaded conditions. To evaluate their durability, the contact angles of the specimens are measured for each cycle. In addition, the surface deformation of the specimens before and after the test is analyzed through SEM imaging and EDS mapping. The degradation of the self-cleaning performance is evaluated before and after the wear test. The results show that superhydrophobic aluminum is approximately 4.5 times more durable than superhydrophobic copper; the copper and aluminum specimens could endure 21,000 and 4,300 cycles of wear, respectively. The results of the self-cleaning test demonstrate that superhydrophobic aluminum is superior to superhydrophobic copper. After the wear test, the self-cleaning rates of the copper and aluminum specimens decrease to 72.7% and 83.4%, respectively. The relatively minor decrease in the self-cleaning rate of the aluminum specimen, despite the large number of wear cycles, confirms that the superhydrophobic aluminum specimen is more durable than its copper counterpart. This study is expected to aid in evaluating the durability of superhydrophobic surfaces in the future owing to the advantage of performing wear tests on superhydrophobic surfaces without damaging the surface coating.

  • In this study, effects of forming angle and friction coefficient on a initiation of the Mannesmann hole defect were analyzed by using a response surface method. The maximum effective plastic strain at center point of specimen is utilized for the prediction of the starting point of crack occurrence, which is suggested by the comparison of integrals of four different ductile fracture models between the histories of the effective plastic strain at center point. It was revealed that the principal stress at the center is the dominant element to the increase of the effective plastic strain. It was also verified by the simulation results from the comparison of experiment and simulation. It is provided that the forming angle of 25 degrees and the spreading angle of 1 degree can be a proper design condition without an occurrence of internal hole defect and an excessive slip.

The Rolling Behavior of a Small Regular Polygonal Part on an Inclined Plane (경사면 위에서 작은 정다각형 부품의 구름 거동)

  • This paper presents the mathematical model for rolling behaviors of a small regular polygonal part on an inclined plane. Throughout the numerical analysis performed with the simulation program which has been experimentally validated, it is shown that the number of edges of the rolling polygonal part can be a measure for the energy dissipation rather than the coefficient of friction. The appropriate slope angle has been found to be around 20 degree for roughness-separation as well as shape-separation of polygonal parts which have small number of edges. In additions, the vibratory motion applied to the inclined plane is able to cause mixed parts to be separated more effectively according to the shape or the roughness. Finally, a couple of parts separation methods based on the analysis results are presented, and are validated through the numerical simulation.

  • The research presents an analytical theory to calculate the characteristics of the bal bearing with waviness in its rolling elements considering the centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment of bal. The effects of centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment are introduced to the kinematic constraints and force equilibrium equations. and the waviness of rolling elements is modeled by sinusoidal function to calculate the contact force at each ball. The numerical solutions of governing equation of berating due to waviness are calculated by using the Newton-Raphson method. The accuracy of the research is validated by comparing the contact force. contact angle in case of considering the centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment of bal and the contact force and vibration frequencies in cases of considering waviness with the prior researches respectively. It investigates the stiffness, contact force. displacement and vibration frequencies of the ball bearing considering not only the centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment of ball but also the waviness of the rolling elements.

  • In this paper, we developed an ANFIS controller through ES algorithm for disturbances rejection in Hot Rolling. The looper of a Hot Rolling is installed between each pair of stands and plays key roles to enhance the product quality of the strip by controlling the tension and the width of the strip. At the same time, the AGC on top of the Mill produces a strip with the desired thickness through pressing its Mill. Between both, however, interactions are caused by coupling effects among strip tension, looper angle and strip thickness. In addition, in case disturbances, it is more difficult to keep strip quantities desirable. So we present an ANFIS controller through ES algorithm which is able to identify fuzzy rule with input/output data and update itself through output errors.

Development of High Precision Forward Slip Model By Using Roll Torque in Hot Strip Finishing Mill (압연롤 토크를 이용한 열연박판 마무리압연 선진율 예측 정밀도 개선연구)

  • New forward slip model has been developed for the precise prediction of rolling speed in the hot strip finishing mill. Besides those influential factors such as neutral point, work roll diameter, friction coefficient, bite angle and the thickness at each side of entry and delivery of the rolls, roll torque was specifically taken into account in this study. To consider the effect of width change on forward slip, calibration factors obtained from rolling torque has been added to new prediction model and refining method has also been developed to reduce the speed unbalance between adjacent stands. The application of the new model showed a good agreement in rolling speeds between the predictions and the actual measurements, and the standard deviation of prediction error has also been significantly reduced.

A Study on the Method of Safe Shiphandling in Violently Rough Sea by Typoon or Hurricane

  • The object of this study is to develop the method of safe conducting of a vessel through stormy sea when we encounter typoon or hurricane on ocean. The scope of investigation in this paper will be limited to safe maneuvering related only with rolling motions of a vessel. The processes of investigations are as follows; Firstly, we decide a CPA(Closest Point of Approach) with the center of the storm and decide significant wave height($H_{1/3}$) by SMB method and then calculate wave height of the highest of 1000 waves($H_{1/1000}$) and other data. Secondly, we make mathematical model of rolling motions of the vessel on the stormy sea and calculate the biggest rolling angle of the vessel and etc. Thirdly, we decide the most safe maneuvering method to ride out the stormy sea. By the above mentioned method we are able to calculate the status of the stormy sea and ships motions to be encountered and ride out safely through violently rough sea.
