Outer tie rod is lighter than other, but there is the trend item weight and the number is increasing due to vehicle performance improvement. Thus, to improve vehicle fuel efficiency, weight lightening is essential. Therefore, this research performed the finite element analysis to investigate the structural performance of the outer tie rod for an electrical vehicle. This study was performed as the preliminary study for a lightweight design of the outer tie rod. The weight of outer tie rod was optimized by adopting the steel material and applying the trial and error method. The strengths due to durability and buckling should be considered in the structural design of an outer tie rod. Furthermore, the meta model-based optimization was applied to obtain its lightweight design, leading to 9 % weigh reduction.

A spacer grid assembly is one of the most important structural components of the nuclear fuel assembly of a pressurized water reactor (PWR), and it affects the performance of the fuel assembly. The primary design requirement is that the mechanical integrity of the fuel rod should be maintained by the spacer grid assembly during the operation of the reactor. It was known that fretting damage to the fuel rod can be reduced by adjusting the relative moving displacement between the fuel rod and its support. In this study, we used the finite element method to evaluate the characteristics of a sliding support designed to reduce fretting damage of fuel rods.

Recently, we reported the existence of AII "rod" amacrine cells in the retina of the greater horseshoe bat Rhinolophus ferrumequinum (Jeon et al., 2007). In order to enhance our understanding of bat vision, in the present study, we report on a quantitative analysis of cone and rod photoreceptors. The average cone density was $9,535cells/mm^2$, giving a total number of cones of 33,538 cells/retina. The average rod density was $368,891cells/mm^2$, giving a total number of rods of 1,303,517 cells. On average, the total populations of rods were 97.49%, and cones were 2.51% of all the photoreceptors. Rod: cone ratios ranged from 33.85:1 centrally to 42.26:1 peripherally, with a mean ratio of 38.96:1. The average regularity index of the cone mosaic in bat retina was 3.04. The present results confirm the greater horseshoe bat retina to be strongly rod-dominated. The rod-dominated retina, with the existence of AII cells discovered in our previous study, strongly suggests that the greater horseshoe bat retina has a functional scotopic property of vision. However, the existence of cone cells also suggests that the bat retina has a functional photopic property of vision.

To improve the accuracy of the standard penetration test (SPT) results, smart measurement system, which considers the energy transfer ratio into the sampler (ETRSampler), is required. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of joints and rod length on the transferred energy into the sampler. The energy transfer ratios into the rod head (ETRHead) and ETRSampler, and the energy ratio from the head to the sampler (ERHS) were obtained using energy modules, which were installed at the rod head and above the SPT sampler. Linear regression analyses are conducted to correlate the ERHS with the number of joints, rod length, and SPT N-values. In addition, the dynamic resistances are calculated using both transferred energies into the rod head and into the sampler, and are compared with the corrected cone tip resistance measured from the cone penetration test (CPT). While the ETRHead are generally constant, but the ETRSampler and ERHS gradually decrease along the depth or the number of joints, except at certain depths with high SPT N-values. Thus, the ERHS can be estimated using the number of joints, rod length, and SPT N-values. The dynamic resistance evaluated by ESampler produces a better correlation with the corrected cone tip resistance than that by EHead. This study suggests that transferred energy into the SPT sampler may be effectively used for more accurate subsurface characterization.
Instead of metal connector generally used on the structural glued laminated timber rahmen joints, the GFRP reinforced laminated plates combining veneer and GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic) and bonded type GFRP rod were used as the connectors. As a result of moment resistance performance evaluation on the joint part applied with these connectors, the yield moment of specimen using the GFRP reinforced laminated plates and GFRP rod pin was measured 4 % lower in comparison to the specimen (Type-1) using the metal connectors, but the initial rotational stiffness was measured 29% higher. Also, the yield moment and rotational stiffness of the specimen using the GFRP-reinforced laminated plates and wood (Eucalyptus marginata) pin showed were measured 11% and 56% higher in comparison to the Type-1 specimen, showing the best performance. It was also confirmed through the failure shape and perfect elasto-plasticity analysis that it showed ductility behavior, not brittle fracture, from the shear resisting force by the pin and the bonding strength increased and the unification of member was carried out. On the other hand, in case of the specimen bonded with GFRP rod, it was impossible to measure the bonding performance or it was measured very low due to poor bonding.

To investigate and analyze the cause of the failure of the connecting rod bolt and the crank pin bearing bolt of the diesel engine of this study, the following results were obtained through site surveying, the investigation of literature referring to similar failures, testing and inspection of the fracture surface, and the experience of the researchers. The fractured crank pin bearing bolt of the diesel engine is estimated to be damaged later than the connecting rod bolt. From the shape of fracture surface, it is evident that the failed connecting rod bolt is fractured by fatigue failure due to abnormally repeated loads (e.g. loosening of the connecting bolt, etc.), and is not failed by brittle fractures due to the impact load. The surface of the U-nut on the fractured connecting rod bolt has been worsening due to the improper use of lubricant (agent for prevention of thread fixing) and no usage of separating the each connecting rod on each cylinder. Moreover, there is the possibility that those poor surface conditions of the fractured connecting rod bolt have affected the failure of the connecting rod bolt of the main engine. And it could be assumed that the mechanical characteristic and manufacturing process of the failed connecting rod bolt and crank pin bearing bolt, which were made by a domestic company, conform to the design requirements for those bolts.
In order to use glued built up timber beam as a structural member for post and beam construction, it must be possible to manufacture long-span lumber. In this study, the researchers conducted a performance evaluation for longitudinal bonding of lumber (cross-section $89{\times}120mm$) made from larch. The specimens were prepared in six different forms using the longitudinal bonding method. The bonding strength of these specimens was tested through tensile strength tests and bending strength tests. The tensile strength test result of the longitudinally bonded parts was better than that of the double lap specimens. And, the tensile strength value of the scarf specimen was better than that of the hooked scarf specimen. The tensile strength of the GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic) rod insertion bonding specimen was 3.6 MPa, which was the highest. As for the bending strength test result of the longitudinally bonded part, the average MOR (modulus of rupture) of the specimen where a GFRP rod was inserted and bonded measured 29 MPa, while the specimens of other bonded parts showed a MOR no more than 11 MPa. Toughness destruction was observed in specimens where a GFRP rod was insertion-bonded. The rest of the specimens showed brittle destruction. The average MOR strength of the Rod + Lap specimen was 30.5 MPa, which was the highest among all longitudinally bonded specimens. The bending strength of the Rod + Lap specimens showed an effective strength that was 66% of that of the control group which were not longitudinally bonded.
Purpose: To determine whether the distance between objects and the size of object are factors to be able to affect dynamic stereoacuity. Methods: Subjects were 37 adults (26 males and 11 females) with an average age of $23.89{\pm}1.76$. Refractive error was fully corrected for all subjects and each visual acuity of them was over 0.9. Three rods test was performed for measurement of stereoacuity. The viewing angles from left rod to right rod were set $5^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, and $15^{\circ}$ and the rod thickness used 7 mm, 14 mm, and 21 mm, respectively. Stereoacuity was repeatedly measured three times in each test condition at 2.5 m distance, and reported the average value of them. Results: When rod thickness was 7 mm or 14 mm, dynamic stereoacuity decreased as the viewing angle increased, and they were significantly decreased (p<0.01) at viewing angles of $10^{\circ}$ and $15^{\circ}$ as compared with that of at $5^{\circ}$, respectively. When rod thickness was 21 mm, dynamic stereoacuity decreased as the viewing angle increased, especially, that of at $15^{\circ}$ decreased significantly (p<0.01) as compared with that of at $5^{\circ}$. The dynamic stereoacuity depending on the rod thickness have an increasing tendency as the rod thickness increased. Conclusions: The viewing angle between objects and the size of viewing object were factors that affect to dynamic stereoacuity.
The effects of moisture content (MC) and diffusion period on the diffusion of boron from borate rod through Pinus densiflora and P. koraiensis were investigated as a preliminary research of integrated remedial treatment for heritage wooden structures using borate rod. After equilibrating MCs of samples (15, 25, and 40%), borate rod (1,000 mg) was inserted into the sample, and stored for diffusion of boron at room temperatures ($23^{\circ}C$) for 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks. Wafers were serially cut at constant intervals from rod treatment point and the boron penetration through longitudinal and transverse direction was measured by staining with boron indicator. For boron diffusion, MC above fiber saturation point was needed, and the diffusion rates increased with time. The fastest rates of diffusion were observed in longitudinal direction, followed by the radial and then the tangential direction. The rates of diffusion in all directions were the fastest in P. koraiensis. In P. densiflora, the diffusion rates through heartwood was faster than that in sapwood in longitudinal direction and vice versa in transverse direction. Based on the best result of this study, optimal space between rod insertion points could be recommended as follows; approximately 120 mm for P. koraiensis and heartwood of P. densiflora, 60 mm for sapwood of P. densiflora in longitudinal direction, and approximately 30 mm for all species tested in transverse direction. However, the effect of rod size and long-term exposure for diffusion on boron movement should be fully investigated for the accurate evaluation of optimal space between rod holes.

This study presents basic data on how to secure stability by analyzing the change in tensile force of steel rod and the inclination characteristics of PSC BOX in the "Temporary fixation system using internal prestressing tendon", which is mainly applied to construction of superstructures by FCM. To date, it has been difficult to confirm the changes in tension force of the steel rod and the inclination of the PSC BOX because the steel rod was installed vertically inside the pier and the PSC BOX. Therefore, measurement of the change in length of the steel rod and the displacement of PSC BOX were performed using a micro-measured FBG sensor. Comparisons of the calculated tensile force and the residual tensile force of the steel rod revealed that the safety factor decreased in all bridges. The cause was mainly identified to be the loss of tensile force in fixation~1segment, and countermeasures are suggested. The analysis of the inclination characteristics showed that the inclination increased with the segment progresses even in bridges with sufficient safety factor, and the difference before and after the segment was confirmed. In addition, the increase in inclination was related to the loss of tension force in the steel rod, and the stress on the opposite sides of the inclination was further reduced. It is believed that upward tensile force is generated in the steel rod on the opposite side of the inclined side due to the unbalanced moment, causing the difference in stress of the steel rod between the two sides.
