  • The Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE, in short) method is the new description of continum motion, which combines the advantages of the classical kinematical descriptions, i.e. Lagrangian and Eulerian description, while minimizing their respective drawbacks. In this paper, the ALE description is adapted to simulate fluid-structure interaction problems. An automatic re-mesh algorithm and a fluid-structure coupling process are included to analyze the interaction and moving motion during the 2-D axisymmetric solid rocket interior FSI phenomena simulation.

  • In this paper, structure design of the payload section of the KSR-III was performed. The payload section of the KSR-III, which corresponds to the second stage, consists of the Scientific Payload Section for the mission of the rocket, the Payload Section (Electronics) for the communication between the rocket and the ground station, and the Payload Section (Attitude Control) for the attitude control of the rocket. In order to accomplish the mission, every payload and component should operate successfully during the mission period and the structure must satisfy the requirements of the payloads. In this research, precise composition of the payload section and payloads arrangement of the KSR-III were performed. And the modification of the structure to meet the requirements were described.

  • This paper presents a numerical analysis of behaviors of rear closer of vertical launch system under rocket plume based on fluid structure interaction analysis. The rocket plume loading is modeled by fully Eulerian method and elasto-plastic behavior of rear cover is calculated by total Lagrangian method based on a 9-node planar element. The interface motion and boundary conditions are described by a hybrid particle level-set method within the ghost fluid framework. We compare the fluid flow pattern between different rear closer models which are elast-plastic and rigid deformation.

  • DC-shift phenomenon can be observed in Hybrid rocket combustion. This phenomenon makes performance drop which is structure problem or reduce thrust. Understanding of DC-shift phenomenon, the conditions of the hybrid rocket combustion stability can be found. In this paper, the condition of DC-shift was found and made by using acoustic mode and vortex shedding frequency. The conditions of stable combustion was defined from the experimental study of DC-shift phenomenon.

  • The structural stability for preliminary model of supersonic rocket which has large L/D ratio is investigated. Large L/D ratio can cause a critical problem on the structural stability by the increase of bending-moment. By using the ANSYS and the CFX codes, we inspected the structural stability for Ma=2 and angle of attack for $20^{\circ}$. The optimum number of bolts and their joints required on the rocket surface are predicted.

  • The KSR-III rocket is a liquid propellant sounding rocket and thrust vector control actuators and cold gas thrusters are used to control pitch and yaw, roll attitude respectively during thrusting phase. In this paper, the structure of designed attitude controller and gain scheduling, results of stability analysis for KSR-III rocket are presented. The attitude controller is implemented with flight software in the domestically developed INS and successfully performed its function in the flight test. The flight data are coincident with simulation results.

  • The supercavitating rocket torpedo SHKVAL was analyzed in view of its system operation procedure and the structure and performance. 3 different propulsion systems installed in SHKVAL were 1st solid rocket booster for launch and acceleration, 2nd solid rocket booster for further acceleration, and Mg-rich Hydroreactive fuel rocket propulsion system for cruising. The gas generator used to help generate the supercavitation bubble was composed of a solid propellant gas generator and a hydroreactive fuel one. The structures and their performance were described based on as much knowledge as we have obtained from cumulative information and up-to-date analysis.

  • In this study, the FMEA and FTA for reliability analysis of hybrid rocket motor are performed, that was designed in the Hybrid Rocket Propulsion Laboratory of Korea Aerospace University. In order to carry out these analyses the structure of the hybrid rocket motor is hierarchically divided into 36 parts down to the component level and FMEA is carried out with 72 failure modes. Reliability is assessed based on the FMEA, and the results are used in the FTA to evaluate the overall system reliability. In the FMEA, the relationship between the cause and failure modes, effects and their risk priorities are evaluated qualitatively. 27 failure modes are chosen as those with the critical severity that should be improved with priority. As a result of the FMEA / FTA study, a series of design or material changes are made for the improvement of reliability.

  • C/SiC composites were developed by a liquid silicon infiltration(LSI) method for use as heat-resistant parts of solid and liquid rocket propulsion engines. The heat resistance characteristics according to the composition ratio (carbon / silicon / silicon carbide) were evaluated by specimen test through arc plasma, supersonic torch test. An ablation equation for oxidation reactions was presented. Through the combustion test it was verified that various parts such as nozzle insert, exit cone and combustion chamber heat resistant parts for rocket propulsion can be manufactured and proved high ablation performance and thermal structure performance.
