  • As in Korean environments with mountainous and hilly areas, the rock generally has to be removed in construction or civil engineering work in tunnelling or excavation for development in urban area. Explosives should be used for blasting, which may cause serious problems on local people for their claim for compensation due to ground vibration, noise. For safe and economic blasting, geology and engineering characteristics of rocks such as discontinuities of rock or weathering are very important factors, together with site characteristics for prediction of ground vibration. In this study, conducted were the detailed study for major rocks most widely distributed in the South-east area, in-situ geological survey, geological and geochemical analysis, and further laboratory uniaxial rock stress, seismic velocity of core samples together with in-situ seismic velocity measurements. Regulations on ground vibration and noise were reviewed for assessing their adaptabilities, and a total of 4,856 measured blasting vibration data were examined for enhancing the confidence level in estimating the predictive formulation using scaled distance statistically.

  • To predict the temperature distribution around a underground rock storage cavern, two- and three- dimensional numerical analysis using FLAC was conducted. The effects of groundwater and latent heat on thermal properties were considered in numerical calculation. The temperature estimated by FLAC are compared with the temperature measured for 5-year operation at Gonjiam storage cavern. Estimated and measured temperatures showed great discrepancy when thermal properties from laboratory tests were used and showed good agreement when the effects from 20% of volumetric water fraction and latent heat were considered. However, the discrepancy still increased with operation time due to the heat flow from ground surface. Three-dimensional numerical models were established to closely approximate the boundary condition of the test site, and numerical results better agreement when groundwater and latent heat effects were considered.

  • Sam-jon-bul or Three Buddha Image Carved on rock surface which is called Sam-jon-bul in Taean, state-designated national treasure No. 307, made in Baek-je Period, has two Buddha images and one Bodhisattva. The detached part of the Sam-jon-bul from wall rock has been attached through conservation treatment in 1995. Few study has been done on weathering condition of petrological point of view and damage while the surface of the Sam-jon-bul has been under serious weathering (relief) of loosing stone particles, and discoloration. In this study, it was made weathering damage maps, which show physical property of the material and state of damage of Sam-jon-bul, in order to dialogize how far the weathering has been done. It has been considered continuing on-site monitoring as necessity when Sam-jon-bul was covered with dew, which may have been caused by change in weather in and out of the protect building. It is necessary to set up detailed conservation plan for it by doing regular diagnosis on the influence of the protect building and weathering of Sam-jon-bul.

  • Surveying rocks for engineering aims for prediction of geological feature of the construction site. Conventionally, survey information at outcrops and bore holes are projected to the construction sites, such as tunnel and slopes, and rock properties of the sites are predicted by interpretations of specialists. This system, the "Fracjection", aims to assist the specialist for visualization of the projected fractures from borehole and outcrop survey. The Fracjection accepts the BIPS and outcrop survey data to its database and allows plotting them in AutoCad map. The software also reads elevation data from contours of the topographic map and constructs DEM of the construction sites. With user's guide, it generates 3D excavation sites such as slopes and tunnels at the topographic map. The s/w projects borehole and outcrop surveyed fractures onto the modeled excavation surface and allows analysis of failure criteria, such as plane, wedge, and toppling failures by built-in stereonet function. Projected fractures can further be analyzed for structural homogeneities and rock mass quality. Moving window style correlation comparison of stereonet plots are used for formal analyses, and RQD type counts of the projected fractures are adopted for the latter analyses.

  • The common underwater rock removal methods involve underwater blasting and crane's chisel dropping impact method. From an environmental point of view, these methods cause ground vibrations and underwater noise. At the site for this study, a method of dropping heavyweight chisel is selected to remove the underwater bedrock near the ferry rack in the course of improving the cargo handling ability of the loading dock. A prediction formula for the vibration was obtained based on the measurement and evaluation of the vibrations caused by the chisel dropping impacts during the test droppings. The prediction formula was successfully applied to the main construction for securing the stability of the structure.

  • Geological and geophysical surveys were performed to examined the cause of the rock-mass slide occurred at the opening site of the Wanglim tunnel of the Seoul-Pusan High Speed Railway. The results of geophygical survey and geometrical analysis for the geological structures indicate that the rock-mass slide was triggered by the heavy rainfall which increases the groundwater level and results in high pore pressure in the N60$^{\circ}$ E-trending major fractured zone of the slope, and that the foliation dipping toward the vertical open face of the slope acted as a main sliding plane during movement.

  • In this case, powerfulness quorum of destruction side which we have expected are supposed general limit value for rock floor when retaining of earth on the section of rock floor in the urban area. For digging in the urban area, there are a lot of dislocations to be disadvantage for safety of digging ants. The displacement of the pondside didn't converged with the phase of the excavation. Also, the speed of displacement got higher than the percentages of risk in the construction. So, we put into operation Face mapping for checking special quality of dislocations which appear on the digging ants. This results were used to decide a destruction in the case of the final excavation by analyzing with other results. It was possible to know the unstable distribution of a fault line in Face Mapping and to get powerful lens of a surface of discontinuity by tests indoors and outdoors. The results were also used to make a solution. Therefore, It's a successful example using the Partial TopDown for stable digging. And it is important that Face Mapping have to be practiced for solving the uncertainty of ground organization when digging design in the urban city.

  • Recently, the application of High-Power mechanized tunnelling technology has been expended around the world. Especially, High-power Modern TBM machines are used in a successful results. Essential for the great success of this modern TBM in difficult rock conditions are based on the development of machine power, suitable better cutter developments, and also developed assesment technology regards on the extensive site investigations. OPP (Owner Procurement Process) system is a proven alternative contract delivery method that is potentially applicable to many tunnel projects. Using the OPP, the owner specifies and procures the TBMs and tunnel lining in advance of the tunnel contract procurement and provides TBM to a tunnel contractor with a goals of reducing project risks and accelerating project schedule. Depending on the blasting vibrations and noises, mechanized tunnelling will be more important particularly in city areas.

  • This study evaluated the pattern of groundwater fluctuation in cyrstalline rock using time series and factor analyses. From the results, groundwater level for the 18 wells was classified into 4 types reflecting the hydrogeological properties and rainfall event. Type 1 (DB1-5, DB1-6, DB2-2, KB-10, KB-13) was significantly influenced by groundwater flow through water-conducting features, whereas type 2 (DB1-3, DB1-7, KB-1~KB-3, KB-7, KB-11, KB-14, KB-15) was affected by minor fracture network as well as rainfall event. Type 3 (DB1-1, DB1-2) was mainly influenced by surface infiltration of rainfall event. Type 4 (DB1-8, KB-9) was reflected by the irregular variation of groundwater level caused by anisotropy and heterogeneity of crystalline rock.

  • Roadheaders have been operated in the construction of Korean tunneling projects. The note introduces operation manual and management case of transverse type roadhead in a Korean tunneling site. The cutting and reaction forces of axial and transverse type cutting heads were qualitatively analyzed. The shaping surfaces of tunnel faces were visualized in both cases of fixed and auto-controlled telescopic cylinder conditions. Excavating with fixed cylinder, concave surfaces were shaped on tunnel face. The total processes of sumping and shearing were illustrated for excavating hard rock tunneling. The supplementary graphical explanations for total tunneling procedures in Korea were provided.
