In this study, required drill bits and excavation methods were developed for an uneven drilling method that can solve the problem of performance degradation of rock bolts. The developed drill bit's excavation performance was verified using rock with a strength of 100 MPa or more. In addition, for the relative evaluation of the uneven excavation method, experimental specimens were prepared for models with and without irregularities, and tests were performed. As a result of the experiment, the model with unevenness exhibited an average critical draw resistance of 801.6 kN, which is about 1.7 times the value of 468.7 kN for the model without unevenness, thus confirming the effect sufficiently. Therefore, it is expected that the resistance performance will significantly increase despite an increase in the uneven hole diameter of 20 mm. In the future, the results of this study could be used as basic data when performing other studies using numerical analysis models and performance verification through experiments to obtain an optimized rock forming method.

This paper presents a new supporting system using steel ribs. In order to perform this research, experimental and numerical studies were performed. In the experimental study, the scaled model tests for the new supporting system consisting of the steel ribs and rock bolts were carried and compared with the conventional existing supporting system. The numerical simulation was carried out to evaluate the new supporting system to verify the experimental results. It was found that the new tunnel supporting system will reduce the tunnel damage.

In this paper, the rock bolts, soil nails with filling grout and the micro-piling with injecting grout by pressure were applied for the stabilization of the cut slopes consisting of sedimentary rocks, igneous rocks and metamorphic rocks respectively. The field measurements and 3-D FEM analyses to find out mobilized tensile stresses of the grouted-reinforcing members installed in the drilled holes were executed on each site. With assuming the increments of the cohesive strength in the improved ground, the back analysis using direct calibration approach of changing the elastic modulus of the ground was used to find out the improved elastic modulus which yields the same tensile stresses from field measurements. The results of back analysis show that the elastic modulus of the improved ground were 4 to 6 times as large as the elastic modulus of original ground. Consequently, the design for slope reinforcement to be more rational, it is proposed that not only the improved cohesive strength is to be used in the incremental ranges on well-known previous proposed data, but also the increased elastic modulus which is about 5 times as large as the original elastic modulus is to be considered in design.

In this study, NATM can reduce the loosened ground near the tunnel face more than the other pre-existing tunnelling methods, because of rapid supporting by means of shotcrete and rock bolts. However, this method sometimes can not help for a unstable tunnel face with a unsupported caondition. In order to keep from that dangerous case, some excavation methods such as bench cut and drift advancing method are introduced, despite of high construction cost and period. So, this thesis is intended to introduce the new tunnel face shape, that is concave shaped face, and discusses its effects on the tunnel stabilization.

When evaluating pillar stability in very closely spaced tunnels, a local safety factor (strength/stress ratio) at the minimum width has been widely used. Tension bolts have been frequently applied as reinforcement for the cases where safety factors are less than 1.0 from FEM stress analysis. However, the local safety factor shows a constant value irrespective of the change in pillar width/tunnel diameter (PW/D) and the safety factor of the pillar is underestimated because the variation of deviation stress is relatively small even when the pre-stressing is applied to the tension bolt. In addition, the average safety factor proposed by Hoek and Brown(1980) was reviewed, but the pillar safety factor was relatively overestimated when the width of the pillar was increased. As an alternative, the SRM safety factor using shear strength reduction method shows the effect of changing the safety factor in the case of no reinforcement and tension bolt reinforcement as the pillar width/tunnel diameter(PW/D) changes. The failure shape is also similar to the previous limit theory result. In this study, the safety factor was evaluated without considering rock bolt and shotcrete to distinguish reinforcing effect of tension bolt.

In the case of relatively good ground and construction condition in the deep excavation for the construction of subway, railway, building etc., flexible earth retaining systems are often used in an economical point of view. It is generally known that the mechanism of behavior in the flexible earth retaining system is relatively more complicated than the rigid earth retaining system. Moreover in the case of long span strut supporting system the analysis of strut axial force change becomes more difficult when the differences of ground condition and excavation work progress on both sides of excavation section are added. When deeper excavation than the specification or installation delay of supporting system is done or change of ground condition is faced due to the construction conditions during construction process, lots of axial force can be induced in some struts and that can threaten the safety of construction. This paper introduces one example of long span deep excavation where struts and rock bolts were used as a supporting system with flexible wall structure. The characteristics of ground deformation and strut axial force change, the measured data obtained during construction process, were analysed, the effects of relatively deeper excavation than the specification on one excavation side and rapid drawdown of ground water level on the other excavation side were deeply investigated from the viewpoint of mutual influences between ground deformations of both excavation sides and strut axial force changes. The effort of this article aims to improve and develop the technique of design and construction in the coming projects having similar ground condition and supporting method.

This paper introduces two examples of long span deep excavation where struts and rock bolts were used as a supporting system with flexible wall structure. And the sections of two examples are 50 meters apart in one construction site, they have almost similar design and construction conditions. The characteristics of ground deformation and strut axial force change were analysed, the similarity and difference between measurement results of tow examples were compared and investigated. The effort of this article aims to improve and develop the technique of design and construction in the coming projects having similar ground condition and supporting method.

A new method for measuring the 3-axis cutting forces of a pick cutter by substituting costly 3-D load cells is proposed in this paper. The proposed cutting force measurement method is capable of estimating the 3-axis cutting forces through mechanical constraints using four single-axis compressive load cells and shoulder bolts. The feasibility of the proposed method was verified by finite element analysis, and the accuracy of the force measurement of the developed force measurement device was investigated by conducting linear rock cutting tests. The tests showed that the new cutting force measurement method is able to measure 3-axis cutting forces with a relative error of approximately 6%. These results imply that the new method could be a suitable alternative to conventional 3-D load cells. In addition, it will allow a significant reduction of approximately 20-30% in the costs required for measuring the cutting force when compared to conventional 3-D load cells.

In order to ensure the stability of tunnel portal slope, reinforcement method such as anchors, soil nails and rock bolts have been used in Korea. When selecting slope reinforcement methods in tunnel portal area such as reinforcement arrangement and length, trial and error method can be very time-consuming and it was also not easy to verify the selection of an optimum condition. In this study, using the FISH language embedded in the finite difference code FLAC3D program, the optimization technique was developed with the Differential Evolution Algorithm (DEA). After building a database on the soil nailing method in tunnel portal area, this system can be selected to an optimum arrangement plan based on the factor of safety through the FLAC3D analysis. Through the results of numerical analysis, it was confirmed that the number of analysis was decreased by about 8 times when DEA based optimization technique was used compared to the full combination (FC). In case of the design of slope reinforcement in tunnel portal area, if this built-system is used, it is expected that the selection of an optimum arrangement plan can be relatively easier.
