SEVERE ACCIDENT ISSUES RAISED BY THE FUKUSHIMA ACCIDENT AND IMPROVEMENTS SUGGESTED

  • This paper revisits the Fukushima accident to draw lessons in the aspect of nuclear safety considering the fact that the Fukushima accident resulted in core damage for three nuclear power plants simultaneously and that there is a high possibility of a failure of the integrity of reactor vessel and primary containment vessel. A brief review on the accident progression at Fukushima nuclear power plants is discussed to highlight the nature and characteristic of the event. As the severe accident management measures at the Fukushima Daiich nuclear power plants seem to be not fully effective, limitations of current severe accident management strategy are discussed to identify the areas for the potential improvements including core cooling strategy, containment venting, hydrogen control, depressurization of primary system, and proper indication of event progression. The gap between the Fukushima accident event progression and current understanding of severe accident phenomenology including the core damage, reactor vessel failure, containment failure, and hydrogen explosion are discussed. Adequacy of current safety goals are also discussed in view of the socio-economic impact of the Fukushima accident. As a conclusion, it is suggested that an investigation on a coherent integrated safety principle for the severe accident and development of innovative mitigation features is necessary for robust and resilient nuclear power system.

Conceptual Design of Automatic Control Algorithm for VMSs (VMS 자동제어 알고리즘 설계)

  • Current state-of-the-art of VMS control is based upon simple knowledge-based inference engine with message set and each message's priority. And R&Ds of the VMS control are focused on the accurate detection and estimation of traffic condition of the subject roadways. However VMS display itself cannot achieve a desirable traffic allocation among alternative routes in the network In this context, VMS display strategy is the most crucial part in the VMS control. VMS itself has several limitations in its nature. It is generally known that VMS causes overreaction and concentration problems, which may be more serious in urban network than highway network because diversion should be more easily made in urban network. A feedback control algorithm is proposed in this paper to address the above-mentioned issues. It is generally true that feedback control approach requires low computational effort and is less sensitive to models inaccuracy and disturbance uncertainties. Major features of the proposed algorithm are as follows: Firstly, a regulator is designed to attain system optimal traffic allocation among alternative routes for each VMS in the network. Secondly, strategic messages should be prepared to realize the desirable traffic allocation, that is, output of the above regulator. VMS display strategy module is designed in this context. To evaluate Probable control benefit and to detect logical errors of the Proposed feedback algorithm, a offline simulation test is performed using real network in Daejon, Korea.

The Development of Compensated Bang-Bang Current Controller for Travel Motor of Industry Electrical Vechicle (산업용 전기차량의 주행 모터용 보상된 Bang-Bang 전류제어기 개발)

  • In order to establish the design technique of the robust current controller in d.c series wound motor driver system, this paper proposes a method of the compensated Bang-Bang current control using d.c series wound motor driver system under the improperly variable load to get minimum time for the torque control. The compensated Bang-Bang current controller structure is simpler than that of PID plus Bang-Bang controller. This paper shows that a general 16 bits microprocessor is efficiently used to implement such an algorithm. The calculation time of software is extremely small when compared with that of conventional PID plus Bang-Bang controller. Both nonlinear operating characteristics of digital switching elements and describing function methods are used for the analysis and synthesis. Real-time implementation of the compensated Bang-Bang current controller is achieved. The concept of design strategy of the control and the PWM waveform generation algorithms are presented in this paper.

  • Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM) has been researched for its superior characteristics. The SRM drive system has simple mechanical and magnetic structure, and it requires simple power electronic drive circuit. It is to be compatible to wide range adjustable speed drive system because it has the same driving characteristics of DC series motor's, easy control principle and high efficiency characteristics. In this paper, 2 types of excitation strategy are researched. Conventional 1-phase excitation and 2-phase excitation method are compared and tested. Though 1-phase excitation method is robust and has high performance, 2-phase excitation method has some merit in appling power device. Some simulation and test results are foaled with some analysis.

  • In this paper, finite impulse response (FIR) smoothers are proposed for discrete-time systems. The proposed FIR smoother is designed under the constraints of linearity, unbiasedness, FIR structure, and independence of the initial state information. It is also obtained by directly minimizing the performance criterion with unbiased constraints. The approach to the MVF smoother proposed in this paper is logical and systematic, while existing results have heuristic assumption, such as infinite covariance of the initial state. Additionally, the proposed MVF smoother is based on the general system model that may have the singular system matrix and has both system and measurement noises. Thorough simulation studies, it is shown that the proposed MVF smoother is more robust against modeling uncertainties numerical errors than fixed-lag Kalman smoother which is infinite impulse response (IIR) type estimator.

  • In order to establish the robust controller design technique of series wound motor driver system. This paper proposes a method of Bang-Bang controller using a series wound motor driver system under improperly variable load. A Bang-Bang controller structure is simpler than the structure of PID plus Bang-Bang controller. This paper shows that a general 8 bits microprocessor is used efficiently implementing such an algorithm. The calculation time of software is extremely small when compared with conventional PID plus Bang-Bang controller. Both nonlinear operating characteristics of digital switching elements and describing function methods are used for the analysis and synthesis. Real time implementation of Bang-Bang controller is achieved. Concept design strategy of the control and PWM waveform generation algorithms are presented in the paper.

Single-Stage Double-Buck Topologies with High Power Factor

  • This paper presents two topologies for single-stage single-phase double-buck type PFC converters, designed to operate at high power factor, near sinusoidal input currents and adjustable output voltage. Unlike the known buck type PFC topologies, in which the output voltage is always lower than the maximum input voltage, the proposed converters can operate at output voltages higher than the ac input peak voltage. A reduced number of switches on the main path of the current are another characteristic of the two proposed topologies. To shape the input line currents, a fast and robust controller based on a sliding mode approach is proposed. This active non-linear control strategy, applied to these converters allows high quality input currents. A Proportional Integral (PI) controller is adopted to regulate the output voltage of the converters. This external voltage controller modulates the amplitude of the sinusoidal input current references. The performances of the presented rectifiers are verified with experimental results.

  • Current available commercial membranes are not robust and are therefore destroyed if left to dry out or handled roughly. Woven fibre microfiltration (WFMF) membranes have advantages over its competitors with respect to durability, thus, favourable for the developing economies and operation during rough conditions. Evaluation of the effects of aeration and brushing as a flux enhancement strategies for WFMF membrane was the purpose of this study. The WFMF membrane was found to be susceptible to pore plugging by colloidal material and adsorption/attachment by microbiological contaminants. This led to a 50% loss in flux. Aeration as a single flux enhancement strategy proved insufficient to maintain high flux successfully. Therefore combined flux enhancement strategies yielded the best results.

  • In ship operation, the roll motions can seriously degrade the performance of mechanical and personnel effectiveness. So many studies for the roll stabilization system design have been performed and good results have been achieved. In many studies, the stabilizing fins are used. Recently rudders, which have been extensively modified, have been used exclusively to stabilize the roll. But, in the roll stabilization control system, the control performance is very sensitive to the ship speed. So, we can see that it is important to consider the ship speed in the rudder roll control system design. The gain-scheduling control technique is very useful in the control problem incorporating time varying parameters which can be measured in real time. Based on this fact, in this paper we examine the;$H_{\infty}$-Gain Scheduling control design technique. Therefore, we assume that a parameter, the ship speed which can be estimated in real time, is varying and apply the gain-scheduling control technique to design the course keeping and anti-rolling control system far a ship. In this control system, the controller dynamics is adjusted in real-time according to time-varying plant parameters. The simulation result shows that the proposed control strategy is shown to be useful for cases when the ship speed is varying and robust to disturbances like wind and wave.

Swing-Motion Control System Design for the Crane Based on Simultaneous Optimum Design Approach (구조제와 제어계의 통합적 설계법을 이용한 크레인의 Swing-Motion 제어계 설계)

  • The swing motion control problem of a container hanging on the trolly is considered in the paper. In the container crane control problem, suppressing the residual swing motion of the container at the end of acceleration, deceleration or the case of that the unexpected disturbance input exists is main issue. For this problem, in general, many trolley motion control strategies are introduced and applied. In this paper, we introduce and synthesize a swing motion control system in which a small auxiliary mass is installed on the spreader made by ourselves. In this control system, the actuator reacting against the auxiliary mass applies inertial control forces to the container to reduce the swing motion in the desired manner. In many studies, the controllers used to suppress the vibration have been synthesized for the given mathematical model of plants. And, the designers have not been able to utilize the degree of freedom to adjust the structural parameters for the control object. To overcome this problem, so called 'Structure/control Simultaneous Method' is used. In this paper, the simultaneous design method is used to determine the optimum weight of moving mass such that the optimal system performance would be achieved. And the experimental result shows that the proposed control strategy is useful to the case of that the controlled system is exposed to the uncertainties and, robust to the unexpected disturbance inputs.
