  • In this paper, the prototype of surface EMG (ElectroMyoGram) sensor is developed for the robotic rehabilitation applications, and the developed sensor is composed of the electrodes, analog signal amplifiers, analog filters, ADC (analog to digital converter), and DSP (digital signal processor) for coding the application example. Since the raw EMG signal is very low voltage, it is amplified by about one thousand times. The artifacts of amplified EMG signal are removed by using the band-pass filter. Also, the processed analog EMG signal is converted into the digital form by using ADC embedded in DSP. The developed sensor shows approximately the linear characteristics between the amplitude values of the sensor signals measured from the biceps brachii of human upper arm and the joint angles of human elbow. Finally, to show the performance of the developed EMG sensor, we suggest the application example about the real-time human elbow motion acquisition by using the developed sensor.

  • Fault-tolerance is an important design criterion for robotic systems operating in hazardous or remote environments. This paper addresses the issue of tolerating a locked joint failure in gait planning for hexapod walking machines which have symmetric structures and legs in the form of an articulated arm with three revolute joints. A locked joint failure is one for which a joint cannot move and is locked in place. If a failed joint is locked, the workspace of the resulting leg is constrained, but hexapod walking machines have the ability to continue static walking. A strategy of fault-tolerant tripod gait is proposed and, as a specific form, a periodic tripod gait is presented in which hexapod walking machines have the maximum stride length after a locked failure. The adjustment procedure from a normal gait to the proposed fault-tolerant gait is shown to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed scheme.

  • The Human Sensory Feedback Laboratory, park of the Armstrong Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, is involved in the development and evaluation of systems that provide sensory feedback to the human operator in telerobotic and virtual environment applications. Specific projects underway in the laboratory are primarily concerned with the information provided by force and vibrotactile feedback to the operator in dextrous manipulation tasks. Four specific research projects are described in the present report. These include : 1) experiments evaluating a 30-element fingertip display, which employs a titanium-nickel shape memory alloy actuator design to provide vibrotactile feedback about object shape and surface texture ; 2) of a fingertip force-feedback display for 3-dimensional information about object shape and suface texture ; 3) use of a force- feedback joystic to provide "force tunnel" information in pilot pursuit tracking tasks ; and 4) evaluations of a 7 degree-of-freedom exoskeleton used to control a robotic arm. Both basic and applied research questions are discussed.

  • In this paper, a robust fault-tolerant control scheme for robot manipulators overcoming actuator failures is presented. The joint(or actuator) fault considered in this paper is the free-swinging joint failure and causes the loss of torque on a joint. The presented fault-tolerant control framework includes a normal control with normal(non-failed) operation, a fault detection and a fault-tolerant control to achieve task completion. For both no uncertainty case and uncertainty case, a stable normal con-troller and an on-line fault detection scheme are presented. After the detection and identification of joint failures, the robot manipulator becomes the underactuated robot system with failed actuators. A robust adaptive control scheme of robot manipulators with the detected failed-actuators using the brakes equipped at the failed(passive) joints is proposed in the presence of parametric uncertainty and external disturbances. To illustrate the feasibility and validity of the proposed fault-tolerant control scheme, simulation results for a three-link planar robot arm with a failed joint are presented.

  • A robot control scheme for specific application a line-tracking system is newly presented. To improve the performance of line-tracking, robot arm dynamics and torque constraints are incorporated into the control scheme. The tracking problem for the workpiece on a variable-speed conveyor is formulated as an optimal tracking problem with specific criteria. Dividing the conveyor speed into the nominal term and the perturbed term, a two-stage control strategy is employed to cope with the nonlinearity and uncertainty of the robot-conveyor system. Simulation results are given to verify good tracking performance with fast cycle time and high accuracy in a robotic workcell.

  • The objective of this work is to design a low cost yet fully functional 4-DOF articulate manipulator for educational applications. The design is based on general purpose, programmable smart servo motors namely the Dynamixel Ax-12. The mechanism for motion was developed by formulating the equations of kinematics and subsequent solutions for joint space variables. The trajectory of end-effector in joint variable space was determined by interpolation of a 3rd order polynomial. The solutions were verified through computer simulations and ultimately implemented on the hardware. Owing to the feedback from the built-in sensors, it is possible to correct the positioning error due to loading effects. The proposed solution offers an efficient and cost-effective platform to study the trajectory planning as well as dynamics of the manipulator.

  • Recently, many researchers have tried to develop wearable robots for various fields such as medical and military purposes. We have been studying robotic exoskeletons to assist the motion of persons who have problems with their muscle function in daily activities and rehabilitation. The upper-limb motions (shoulder, elbow and wrist motion) are especially important for such persons to perform daily activities. Generally for shoulder motion 300F is needed to describe its motion(extension/flexion, abduction/adduction, internal/external rotation) but we have used a redundant actuator thus making a 4 DOF system. In this paper, we proposed the mechanism design of the exoskeleton which consists of 4-DOF for shoulder and 1-DOF for elbow robotic exoskeleton to assist upper-limb motion. Then we compared the new mechanism design and prototype mechanism design. Here we also analyze the proposed system kinematically to find out and to avoid the singular point. This research will ensure that the proposed wearable robot system make human's motion more powerfully and more easily.

  • In this paper, a Smart Home Service Robot, McBot II, which performs mess-cleanup function etc. in house, is designed much more optimally than other service robots. It is newly developed in much more practical system than McBot I which we had developed two years ago. One characteristic attribute of mobile platforms equipped with a set of dependent wheels is their omni- directionality and the ability to realize complex translational and rotational trajectories for agile navigation in door. An accurate coordination of steering angle and spinning rate of each wheel is necessary for a consistent motion. This paper develops trajectory controller of 3-wheels omni-directional mobile robot using fuzzy azimuth estimator. A specialized anthropomorphic robot manipulator which can be attached to the housemaid robot McBot II, is developed in this paper. This built-in type manipulator consists of both arms with 4 DOF (Degree of Freedom) each and both hands with 3 DOF each. The robotic arm is optimally designed to satisfy both the minimum mechanical size and the maximum workspace. Minimum mass and length are required for the built-in cooperated-arms system. But that makes the workspace so small. This paper proposes optimal design method to overcome the problem by using neck joint to move the arms horizontally forward/backward and waist joint to move them vertically up/down. The robotic hand, which has two fingers and a thumb, is also optimally designed in task-based concept. Finally, the good performance of the developed McBot II is confirmed through live tests of the mess-cleanup task.

  • A manipulator for test-cup attachment modules, which was a part of a robot milking system, was developed to reduce cost and labor for cow milking processing. A Cartesian coordinate manipulator was designed for the milking process, because it was quite flexible and can be constructed more economically than any other configuration. The manipulator was made use of DC motors, screws for power transmission, a RS422 interface system for the transmission of coordinate values and a one-chip microprocessor, 89C52. Performance tests of the manipulator were conducted to measure experimentally the precision of all axes. Some of the results are as follows. 1. The Cartesian coordinate manipulator was designed and built. Dimension of the three perpendicular axes (X, Y, and Z) and one arm’s axis(W) to pick up and transfer the modules were 700㎜$\times$450㎜$\times$550㎜$\times$650㎜. The arm’s axis moved the teat-cup attachment module, which attached four teat-cup to four teats, detached four teat-cup from four teats, was designed and manufactured by using CAD, CAM and CNC. 3. After 10 replications of exercising the manipulator, mean precision values(positioning error) of X, Y, Z axes wee 0.48㎜, 0.20㎜, 0.19㎜, respectively. Therefore, we conclude the axes to have a precision better than 0.5㎜, had no problem to operate correctly the milking manipulator.
