  • Most existing industrial robots have fences installed around them to ensure safety. However, industrial sites are recently being transformed into workspaces shared by both robots and humans working cooperatively, wherein the robots are without security fencing owing to the development of sensor technology. However, in the last five years (2017-2021), 16 deaths have occurred due to robots at industrial sites, with the main cause of the accidents being workers approaching an industrial robot in operation and getting entangled with or colliding into the robot and its peripherals. To prevent such accidents, multilateral research is needed. To this end, this study analyzes the nonconforming contents of safety inspections for industrial robots and demonstrates the safety performance of the safety function control system implemented in an industrial robot cell. In addition, to ensure the fundamental safety of industrial robots, this study proposes the introduction of a safety certification system so that safety functions can be implemented in the design, manufacturing, and installation stages of the robots.

  • The main objective was to design and develop a prototype robot system for assessing slip resistance. The developed robot system will be able to be used for stochastic nature of friction in the whole workplace. The second objective was to evaluate its operating condition in the laboratory, using a dreg sled type slipmeter(BOT-3000) as reference device. It was found that COF(Coefficient of Friction) measured with robot system was similar to that of BOT-3000 when sliding velocity was reached at 0.2m/s. The robot system might be the more promising one than any traditional measurement devices. A further evolution of prototype devices, as well as the development of test methods for that's various applications, is to be started in forthcoming studies.

  • Background: With the increasing demand for industrial robots and the "noncontact" trend, it is an appropriate point in time to examine whether risk assessments conducted for robot operations are performed effectively to identify and eliminate the risks of injury or harm to operators. This study discusses why robot accidents resulting in harm to operators occur repetitively despite implementing control measures and proposes corrective actions for risk assessments. Methods: This study collected 369 operator-injured robot accidents in Korea over the last decade and reconstructed them into the mechanism of injury, work being undertaken, and bodily location of the injury. Then, through the techniques of Systematic Cause Analysis Technique (SCAT) and Root Cause Analysis (RCA), this study analyzed the root and direct causes of robot accidents that had occurred. Causes identified included physical hazards and complex combinations of hazards, such as psychological, organizational, and systematic errors. The requirements of risk assessments regarding robot operations were examined, and three case studies of robot-involved tasks were investigated. The three assessments presented were: camera module processing, electrical discharge machining, and a panel-flipping robot installation. Results: After conducting RCA and comparing the three assessments, it was found that two-thirds of injury-occurring from robot accidents, causative factors included psychological and personal traits of robot operators. However, there were no evaluations of the identifications of personal aspects in the three assessment cases. Conclusion: Therefore, it was concluded that personal factors of operators, which had been overlooked in risk assessments so far, need to be included in future risk assessments on robot operations.
