  • A Robot Performance Evaluation System(RPES) with the laser tracker Leica LTD 500 was developed according to the ISO 9283 robot performance criteria. The developed system is set up a test robot to continuously move the prescribed cyclic trajectories without a human intervention and the laser tracker to simultaneously measure the robot's movement. And then, the system automatically extracts the required data from the tremendous measured data, and computes the various performance criteria which represents the present state of the test robot's performance. This paper explains how ISO 9283 robot performance criteria was used for the developed system, and suggests a automatic data extraction algorithm from the mass of measured data. And also, a user-friendly Robot Performance Evaluation System(RPES) Software was developed with Visual Basic satisfying the need of Hyundai Motor Company. The developed system was implemented on NACHI 8608 AM 11 robot. The resulted output shows the effectiveness of the developed system.

  • To improve construction productivity and quality, and to make the construction environment safe, a new system, Robot-based Construction Automation (RCA), is currently being developed in Korea. To determine whether RCA is an improvement over traditional construction methods (TCMs), an evaluation method, called the Performance Evaluation Index (PEI), is suggested for RCA. The PEI considers the relationships among the factors influencing the performance of the system obtained using the Delphi method and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). As the evaluation shows, RCA is much better than TCM except for three factors: the rate of work success, quality improvement by learning experience, and construction duration.

  • In this paper, we propose a position estimation method of an entertainment robot in a performance stage. A position information is needed to produce contents of an entertainment robot performance. First, the performance stage is realized by a CD (cadmium sulfide) sensor matrix with a constant distance. Then the proposed position estimation uses ON/OFF information of a CD sensor in a performance stage. We confirmed that the position of the robot is detected with an maximum 4cm in position evaluation experiments. The robot was traveling to the final target position in the walking experiment with 75cm and 120cm path plan. Ultimately, the effectiveness of the proposed estimation is assessed by experimental results of a robot in performance stage. Also, in the proposed system installed by a robot performance contents, there is no necessity to mount a position estimation device on a robot; therefore an advantage of our system is that an entertainment robot commercialized by robot vendor can be utilized in our performance stage directly.

  • The high performance intelligent robots have become to use a lot of sensors, actuators and controllers which are connected via bus-type networks while the point to point connection was widely used in-robot networks of existing robots. The bus topology makes the robot system share data internally and it can also reduce the weight of the robot because of smaller wiring harness. The CAN is one of serial bus communication protocols typically used for in-vehicle networks and now it can also be used for in-robot networks because of its low cost and reliability. A performance evaluation system for this type of networked system is developed to analyze the real-time operation and the reliability of a serial-bus network, and the usefulness of the developed evaluation system is shown by some experiments for a network of many CAN nodes.

  • An off-line programming, OLP, system is widely used in automation fines. To help an on-line robot system to carry out desirable tasks planned by the off-line simulation, an approach to the real-time communication is presented. The OLP system developed consists of a software, a host computer(PC), a SCARA robot body, four servo drivers, and four independent joint controllers. This study focuses on the software where real-time communication is included. The software, can be used in teaching, trajectory planning, real-time running, and performance evaluation. The evaluation of different control algorithms is one of the merits of the software. The software can give servo commands for task running. A comparison of generated and corresponding actual trajectories provides the evaluation of task performance. The safety, of the OLP system is ensured by alarming malfuntions of the system. The OLP system developed can reduce the teaching time and increase the user's convenience.

  • Mobile robots with omni-directional wheels can generate instant omni-directional motion without requiring extra space to change the direction of the body. Therefore, they are capable of moving in an arbitrary direction under any orientation even in narrow aisles or tight areas. In this research, an omni-directional mobile robot based on Mecanum wheels was developed to achieve omni-directionality. A CompactRIO embedded real-time controller and C series motion and I/O modules were employed in the control system design. Ultrasonic sensors installed on the front and lateral sides were utilized to measure the distance between the mobile robot and the side wall of a workspace. Through intensive experiments, a performance evaluation of the mobile robot was conducted to confirm its feasibility for industrial purposes. Mobility, omni-directionality, climbing capacity, and tracking performance of a squared trajectory were selected as performance indices to assess the omni-directional mobile robot.

  • A mixed IP formulation is presented which concurrently routes and sequences the tasks on the MRS, reflecting the flexible characteristics. As a preliminary work for the performance evaluation of the MRS, a two robot system working on independent tasks is studied. Models for three types of the system capable of simple error recovery function are established using queueing model, and performances are evaluated and analysed.

  • This work proposes a controller tuning method of a Hyundai 8608 robot in order to improve its performance. For this, we analyzed the control structure of the robot, and the functions of all the adjustable parameters in the robot controller with a reference 'NACHI Technical Report'. Through the analysis, we found out that 3 important parameters(VRRL, VRF, VRGIN) act like a conventional PID gains and other parameters are closely related to these 3 parameters. Conclusively, parameter tuning of these 3 parameters is enough in most cases of applications with other parameters fixed. The conventional PID tuning is performed to each joint of the test robot with Robot Performance Evaluation System(shown in our companion paper) so that the acceptable gain ranges for each joint are determined and then the robot performance tests are repeatedly done with the combination of the acceptable gains. Finally, the best combination is selected for its best performance. For the effectiveness of the proposed method, it was implemented on a Hyundai 8608 robot and its results are compared with the results of NACHI's Semi-Auto Tuning Method and the results which are done by a tuning expert with his eyes.
