  • The slope of an open cut tunnel is located above the exit of the Leijia tunnel on the Changgan high-speed railway. During the excavation of the open cut tunnel foundation pit, the slope slipped twice, a large landslide of 92500 m3 formed. The landslide body and unstable slope body not only caused the foundation pit of the open cut tunnel to be buried and the anchor piles to be damaged but also directly threatened the operational safety of the later high-speed railway. Therefore, to study the stability change in the slope of the open cut tunnel under heavy rain and excavation conditions, a 3D numerical calculation model of the slope is carried out by Midas GTS software, the deformation mechanism is analyzed, anti-sliding measures are proposed, and the effectiveness of the anti-sliding measures is analyzed according to the field monitoring results. The results show that when rainfall occurs, rainwater collects in the open cut tunnel area, resulting in a transient saturation zone on the slope on the right side of the open cut tunnel, which reduces the shear strength of the slope soil; the excavation at the slope toe reduces the anti-sliding capacity of the slope toe. Under the combined action of excavation and rainfall, when the soil above the top of the anchor pile is excavated, two potential sliding surfaces are bounded by the top of the excavation area, and the shear outlet is located at the top of the anchor pile. After the excavation of the open cut tunnel, the potential sliding surface is mainly concentrated at the lower part of the downhill area, and the shear outlet moves down to the bottom of the open cut tunnel. Based on the deformation characteristics and the failure mechanism of the landslides, comprehensive control measures, including interim emergency mitigation measures and long-term mitigation measures, are proposed. The field monitoring results further verify the accuracy of the anti-sliding mechanism analysis and the effectiveness of anti-sliding measures.

  • Among public transportation facilities within urban area, electric railway (subway) has been a regionally based facility that has played an important role in improving the foundation of territory development and arrangement of living foundation and living environment while supplementing the regional road network. In this regard, the subway stations should be allocated in the right place to ensure mobility, convenience and economic feasibility, some of transportation characteristics of road network combined with the subway. However, it would be very hard to evaluate quantitatively the effects of public transportation facilities such as subway in metropolitan cities on regional development and change in land use and to suggest the data that would be utilized in future city planning corresponding to their results. Therefore, this study evaluated the change in land use by the conditions of location of subway stations quantitatively; then, it evaluated and analyzed the change in land use for the internal and external parts of the surrounding areas of subway stations through the GIS spatial analysis and classification of landsat TM satellite image for utilizing it as reference material for the new establishment of subway stations in the future.

  • The numerical analyses were performed to investigate the curling behavior of the post-tensioned prestressed concrete approach slab (PTAS) under environmental loads. A technique to include properly the boundary conditions of one end of PTAS that was connected to the bridge abutment using hinges was proposed for the numerical model. The applicability of a simplified model not having hunches was also investigated. By using the developed models, the curling behavior of PTAS was analyzed when the foundation settlement occurred. The analysis results showed that the maximum tensile stress obtained from the simplified model involving a simplified hinge connection was very closed to that obtained from a rigorous model. When the slab curled up, the maximum tensile stress occurred in the model including no foundation settlement, but when the slab curled down, the maximum stress occurred in the model including partial settlement of the foundation. Therefore, the design of PTAS should be performed considering those maximum tensile stresses.

  • The construction on these flimsy ground, activation of unsymmetrical surcharges, can often cause of the embankment road lateral flow or the destruction of the activities. In this study, the stability of the abutment pile foundation installed on soft ground and its behavior has been evaluated. The behavior of the abutment pile foundation under lateral flow was studied by verifying the behavior and reinforcement effects of the abutment pile foundation of previous studies about horizontal loads acting on the pile due to the lateral flow of the ground by performing finite element analysis. As a result of the consolidation analyses, the undrained cohesion or the strength of the soft ground, was increased by about 1.1 to 1.8 times by the increase in the strength of the soft ground according to the degree of consolidation. It is deemed reasonable to use 3.8 cm of the allowable displacement both economically and constructively, but considering the importance of the structure and the uncertainty of the ground, measurement shall be carried out during construction and thorough safety management of the lateral flow should be done.

  • In order to solve the serious traffic congestion in seoul metropolitan city, large-scale underground space development such as underpasses, deep underground roads, and GTX (Great Train eXpress) is being carried out. In order to minimize the impact of the adjacent seoul metro line A pier foundation and stability due to the construction of the underground road in Seoul, earth retaining structures were reinforced and the foundation was reinforced as well. In this study, three-dimensional finite element mehtod analysis was performed to evaluate the effect on adjacent construction and to review the stability of the underpass excavation work. The reinforcement effect was quantitatively analyzed through numerical analysis. As a result of the analysis, compared to the result of performing the existing reinforcement when overlapping CIP and ground reinforcement grouting were performed, the displacement of the earth retaining structures was reduced by more than 50%, and stress of the foundation piles were also reduced by more than 45%. Based on the analysis of the numerical analysis results, it was confirmed that the displacement of the walls of earth retaining structures during adjacent construction should be strictly controlled.

  • In general, transportation sources include both on-road vehicles and off-road equipment. Off-road vehicles have usually used diesel engines, which have the disadvantage of high NOx emission. Common rail direct injection (CRDI) and after-treatment systems have been applied to meet the exhaust gas emission regulations for diesel vehicles. In the present, agricultural machinery has satisfied the Tier 3 emission regulations by using waste gate turbocharger (WGT) and internal exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). In this paper, the combustion and emission characteristics of an EGR system applied to a 56kW off-road vehicle in non-road transient cycle (NRTC) mode have been investigated. The EGR map was made from foundation experiments determining the EGR duty for all engine operating conditions, and then this map was applied to the NRTC mode. Consequently, the NOx emission was reduced by the EGR system, and the Tier 4 interim emission regulations were satisfied by using both the EGR system and an after-treatment system.

  • Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) Affairs of Korean government improved RSMS to be linked with GIS data and now we have research foundation. In case of expressway and rural national highway, there is a referenced place-name for direction road sign, but there is no reference in urban road and is only a guideline. Direction signs in urban could not have consistent place-name and it is vary difficult to select the proper place-name. Based on the change of analysis environment and perception of road sign - related problem, This study is aimed to suggest how to deduce the spatial impact zone of place-name from DB and GIS in RSMS of Changwon City. The results indicated that there is a spatial difference between place-names according to whether is near or far on the road sign. It is expected that this method would be effectively used in case of new road sign and so the process to select the place-name would be simple.

  • PURPOSES : This study is to suggest future development direction and application of environmental noise barriers as multi-functional soundproof wall. METHODS : Based on the literature review, case study and patent search, research and patent trend were investigated. Patent search was conducted by Patent searching tools, 'Focust'. RESULTS : As environmental noise barriers, Vegetative soundproof wall, photovoltaic soundproof wall, and air-pollution reduction soundproof wall were investigated. First of all, In Korea, Vegetative soundproof wall is being developed mostly as soundproof wall that has vegetation foundation inside, to meet the domestic condition with 23 patent applications. Second, Photovoltaic soundproof wall is being developed mainly with efficiency of photovoltaic system rather than soundproofing. And it is limited to one generation solar cell technology, although Solar cell technology is developing at a rapid pace. On the other hand, for reducing air-pollutant by soundproof wall, a variety of methods are being suggested (filtration, adsorption, and photocatalytic oxidation), and one of them, adsorption are applied for developing air pollution reduction soundproof wall in Korea. CONCLUSIONS: The above soundproof wall is not simple structure, but road facility applied fusion technique. Therefore, as one system, it is difficult to harmonize due to various considerations for design factor. However, if it's possible that a benefits of one system apply to another system, Synergy effect may be created. In the foreseeable future, soundproof wall may be considered as a road system using fusion technique rather than just functional facility. Therefore, substantial studies for applying multi-functional soundproof wall on the road are needed for the future.

  • Resilient deformation characteristics on unbound pavement materials have been adopted for design and nonlinear analysis of pavement structure under traffic loadings. However, relatively few studies have been done on the nonlinear resilient behavior of unbound pavement materials in Korea. In addition, only the limited information is available for estimating the resilient modulus values on unbound materials. In this study, a laboratory resilient-deformation test under repeated loadings is performed in order to fud a proper constitutive model that correlates the resilient modulus with stress state from field condition. Finally, a finite element analysis is conducted for evaluating the nonlinear characteristics of unbound materials. and the pavement performance respectively.
