Characteristic of Road Traffic Noise According to Road Vertical Alignment (도로 종단선형에 따른 도로교통 소음 특성 분석)

  • PURPOSES: The purpose of this study is to research the influence of road traffic noise by road slope through the analysis of the field road traffic noise and determine consideration of road slope in the case of appling active noise cancellation. METHODS: This study measures vehicle's noise by the NCPX method at the three field sections such as uphill, downhill, and flatland. Total sound pressure and sound pressure level by the 1/3 octave band frequency are calculated through the raw field data. Total sound pressure level is compared by ANOVA test and T test statistically. The results obtained are compared in accordance with the road slope and the progress of the uphill section. RESULTS : The noise characteristic of early, medium, and last parts of uphill was found to be consistent when the vehicle was travelling uphill section. The result of statistical test, it was shown that total sound pressures are not different each other. According to the comparison by the geometry, sound pressure of the uphill section was higher than those of the flatland and downhill section in high frequency band. By the result of statistical test, total sound pressure are different according to geometry in the case of high vehicle speed. In the comparison result by road slope, each sound pressure level was found to be consistent in total frequency. However, total sound pressure proportionally increased according to road slope. CONCLUSIONS: It is found that the effect of road slope on noise generation was little in this experimental sites.

Development of the Fundamental Technology for Ubiquitous Road Disaster Management System (유비쿼터스 도로재해관리시스템을 위한 기반기술 개발)

  • This study is aimed at the development of ubiquitous based road disaster management system. The fundamental technologies used for developing this system are classified into three modules - wireless internet communication module, mobile module and server module. These fundamental technologies can be used not only for developing road disaster management system but also for developing various mobile or ubiquitous systems. With this system, workers can download many DB (Digital map, Attribute information etc.) from server to the field in realtime. The accuracy and objectivity of the DB could be improved with these informations collected at fields because these data can be used as basic data for road disaster information collection. Because in the web based server module - Web based Road Disaster Management System (URDMS) - field disaster information was showed link up with exist DB on road by absolute coordinate, the decision making with all of the field information was made and it sent to a field staff in realtime. The problems of current road disaster management rule ran be solved by this URDMS.

  • In this paper, a 3-dimensional analysis of magnetic road and a position sensing system for an autonomous vehicle system is described. Especially, a new position sensing system, end of the important component of an autonomous vehicle, is proposed. In a magnet based autonomous vehicle system, to sense the vehicle position, the sensor measures the field of magnetic road. The field depends on the sensor position of the vehicle on the magnetic road. As the rotation between the magnetic field and the sensor position is highly complex, it is difficult that the relation is stored in memory. Thus, a neural network is used to learn the mapping from th field to the position. The autonomous vehicle system with the proposed position sensing system is tested in experimental setup.

Differences in Field Sign Abundance of Mammal Species Around the Roads in Baekdudaegan Mountains

  • This study was conducted to obtain the information of distribution, protection and management for mammal species in fragmented forest areas around the road from June 2002 to May 2003 in 9 study sites of Baekdugdaegan mountains, Korea. Field signs of twelve mammals, moles Molera robusta, Korean hares Lepus coreanus, Manchurian chipmunk Tamias sibiricus, red squirrels Sciurus vulgaris, Korean racoon dogs Nyctereutes procyonoides, Siberian weasels Mustela sibirica, badgers Meles meles, otters Lutra lutra, Bengal cats Felis bengalensis, wild boars Sus scrofa, water deer Hydropotes inermis and roe deer Capreolus pygargus were recorded in this study. There were no differences in total number of species between 50 m areas and 50-100 m areas from road in snow and non-snow season. Number of mammals' field signs were different in non-snow season between both areas. Red squirrels and Siberian weasels were more abundant in 50 m areas, and Korean hares and Manchurian chipmunks were in 50-100 m areas. Habitat using pattern of mammal species may be affected by the road. Reasonable road construction and maintenance would be needed for protection and management of wildlife and their habitats.

A Risk Analysis of Road Slopes Using GIS (GIS를 이용한 도로 사면의 위험성 분석)

  • A risk analysis on the cutting slope of roads near Cheongju area was carried out with the data from geological map, field investigation, and laboratory test and with the Geographic Information System. A risk analysis method on the cutting slope of road using the Geographic Information System was developed with the data from geological map, field investigation and laboratory tests. In the GIS, road factors which are safety factor, class of road, slake index, slope-protection works, and height of slope in the cutting slopes are classified into some ranks, and their weighting factors were taken into account. This method can be applied effectively to a road management.

EXPERIMENTAL VALIDATION OF THE POTENTIAL FIELD LANEKEEPING SYSTEM

  • Lanekeeping assistance has the potential to save thousands of lives every year by preventing accidental road departure. This paper presents experimental validation of a potential field lanekeeping assistance system with quantitative performance guarantees. The lanekeeping system is implemented on a 1997 Corvette modified for steer-by-wire capability. With no mechanical connection between the hand wheel and road wheels the lanekeeping system can add steering inputs independently from the driver. Implementation of the lanekeeping system uses a novel combination of a multi-antenna Global Positioning System (GPS) and precision road maps. Preliminary experimental data shows that this control scheme performs extremely well for driver assistance and closely matches simulation results, verifying previous theoretical guarantees for safety. These results also motivate future work which will focus on interaction with the driver.

  • The purpose of field monitoring system in KHC-Test Road is to provide the performance data for environmental loadings from pavement surface. Among them, water content reflectometer(WCR) are used for measuring the volumetric water content of pavement subgrades. However, WCRs are not well-calibrated based on the local field conditions. A need therefore exists for improving equations for predicting water content using the proper field and laboratory calibrations. Based on the study performed, calibrations based on various soil characteristics and density conditions are well fitted to the data from fields. So, it is recommended to use the suggested general calibration of WCR to the compacted subgrade soils in test road for predicting the volumetric water content.

A Study on the Effects of High Embankment Road on the Microclimatic Environment (고성토 도로의 건설이 미기후 환경에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, Inhabitants nearby the high embankment road have requested a civil complaint on the environmental deteriorations and economic harms. This study was carried out numerical simulation using the 3-D microclimate model 'Envi-met' in order to investigate the variations of a flow field and a temperature field at the road sections with a high embankment and a bridge. About the simulation of flow field, the wind field has changed due to the disturbance of airflow by a high embankment road considerably. And the wind velocity decreased in the whole of simulation space widely. But, the wind velocity and wind direction sited loose to the section of a bridge, relatively. In the results of a temperature field, the slight variations of temperature field were discovered by the disturb of the mixing flow from a high embankment road. These results indicate that the numerical simulation can provide useful information to minimize the disasters, such as traffic accidents and various microclimatic environments in the transportation projects.

Effect of Land Consolidation on Agricultural Mechanization (경지정리 사업이 농업기계화에 미치는 영향)

  • In 1990's, two types of land consolidation has been widely carried out to enforce competativeness of rice production in Korea. One is so called large-scale land consolidation for resizing paddy field and farm road, the other is general land consolidation for changing both size and shape of field, water channel and farm road. This study was conducted to evaluate how much effect on fm mechanization the land consolidation had. To evaluate the influence of the land consolidation, theoretical analysis and surveys were accomplished. Land consolidation was analyzed to increase field efficiency by 180 to 670% depending on the type of land consolidation and machine selection. Also, land consolidation brought increment of real working time ratio by reducing traveling time on farm road. Trends of large scale mechanization and increment of custom work were observed to be accelerated by land consolidation. It also gave effect on the pattern of machine troubles. Farmers were conscious of the influence of land consolidation on machine utilization, however, in plains level of satisfaction was shown to be low.
